Wednesday morning buffet

Grab your plate and utensils.  (Napkins are optional.)

  • California is on the verge of passing laws on student-athlete stipends that will run afoul of NCAA rules.
  • In case you wanted a fashion review of Georgia’s new branding effort, here ’tis.
  • Texas A&M wants Johnny Manziel to be treated just like any other student when he’s on campus.  Except for the full-time bodyguard, that is.
  • Is there a Krispy Kreme in Johnson City, Tennessee?
  • Good nuts and bolts interview with Vandy offensive line coach Herb Hand, if you’re interested in what that offense tries to do scheme-wise.
  • And speaking of Vanderbilt’s offensive line, I didn’t realize the ‘Dores were able to redshirt their entire freshman class last year.  That’s how you build for the long haul in the SEC.  (Or anywhere, really.)
  • Georgia’s players claim to have learned one lesson from the Boise State game.
  • This post caused me to ask the musical question – when the day comes that gay marriage is legal in the South, will that bring more conflict with the unwritten rule about not having your wedding in the fall?  Hmm… maybe the religious right’s missing an argument here.

I realize it was rhetorical, but yes there is a KK in Johnson City. Its only 1 year old – and about half a mile from campus! Having Fulmer “consult” is a big deal up here. Hard to do well here though – Mike Cavan got pissed when he was a coach here and ETSU hosted its first home 1-AA play off game and only 4K people showed up. That was during the peyton-era at UT.

I spent some time in JC at the USMC reserve center there while in college, I had a few guys who were on the football team then and even went to one of the home games. Its not a bad area of the country, but was a hell of a drive from Athens to JC for drill.

As someone who’s spent the last few years working in marketing, my eyes start to glaze over anytime I see something referred to as a “brand identity system.” Guys, it’s a new fricking font. There may technically be more to it than that, but that’s all anybody’s gonna notice. Don’t try and make it sound like you’ve cooked up the uni equivalent of the Strategic Defense Initiative here.

As someone who works with multiple brand visual identities every day, Nike has now included this “value-added” brand identity system as part of the their normal service contract as a supplier to the school. It gets some PR for all parties in the local market but it is not like Nike is doing anything less for the other like schools in the portfolio.

And it’s an awful font. I’m with the author at UniWatch; the basketball uniforms make more sense now because the new font fits the rounded numbers, but why do they need that for football? And that bulldog logo…sheesh. Looks to me like they went cheap on the design firm… no, no way McGarity would cheap out, no, not him.

I agree. Rounded font looks bad.

Just like with the Chick Fil A Kick Off Pro Combats, Nike sent us the JV marketing/design team.

      • I’m surprised that Nike bulldog wasn’t wearing a hat turned backward with another bulldog on it.

Honestly, today’s sport team design ‘systems’ (or whatever you want to call them) have all the character blasted off them by slick, overly clean, streamlined vector illustrations.

I’ll take the old hand drawn bulldawg any day over yet another slick big agency follow the mainstream snoozefest crap they are putting out there today.

While both Trooper Taylor and Matt Stafford think the hat would be a funny definition of infinity, they doubt your commitment to vector illustration.

Love, absolutely LOVE that the ‘Dores are ready to beat up on the ACC champ now. Of course they will still be the EASTS’ bitch.

I’d like to complement the folks at Nike for figuring out a way to get “Walker” back on the field with the new uniform strategy. It will be great seeing Herschel in the backfield against Clemson. What??? I’m reading too much into this? You mean he doesn’t still have a year of eligibility left?

I agree about most of the comments in the link concerning the jersey, logos, etc. Rebranding in college…especially with traditional programs like UGA, makes me cringe. Programs like this don’t need to rebrand as tradition is what’s recognizable and sells. Sadly, I’m sure NIKE rolled up a huge wheel barrow full of money and UGA declared “dress me as you like!”

I really don’t like the new bulldog head logo. It’s very stale and as the comment in the link said, “Not awful, but it feels kinda generic, like they got it at Bulldogs R Us or something.”

The new Bulldog head logo doesn’t bother me as long as I can still find the real one on decals and bumper stickers and shirts. Although now when I see someone with the new Bulldog, I’ll just figure they’re a fan of Fresno State or some other school.

The old school Bulldog head logo is my most favorite logo of them all. I’ll be pissed (and won’t be buying any new merch w/ the new logos) if it goes away.

I wonder: Does this mean that they are going to change the look of the Bulldog on the UGA prestige license plates sold by the State of Georgia?

You’re right. The new Bulldog logo looks a little like the head of the Fresno State Bulldog logo.

“this situation is new to everyone, with a Heisman winner only entering his sophomore season.”

With that in mind, for practice, Johnny Football will run through a spread of Victoria Secret models.

I wonder if redshirting every freshman ultimately hurts recruiting. Some kids wont sign with a school if they don’t think they will have a chance to play as a freshman.

Most comments I have read about the rebranding have been negative. I think it was a waste of money. The font won’t get me to buy new merchandise. I like the old bulldog logo.

I’m pretty sure the A&M Corps will make him an honorary member, then he can have an escort of sword toting, spur wearing bad azzes with him 24 hours a day.

Senator, not wanting to get hypertechnical but regarding the California/NCAA kerfuffle going on in the California State Legislature over this proposed statute that would violate NCAA rules, how in the hell could the NCAA take the position (apparently successfully at least once) in court that it is immune from state law under the Interstate Commerce section of the Dormant Commerce Clause found in Article I of the US Constitution? That clause allows Federal government supremacy and should not apply to private organizations like the NCAA. The author of the linked article seems to think that it is a threat and also states the NCAA has raised that argument as a defense in the Penn State litigation brought by the Pennsylvania AG.

The new font sucks, but it’s a world better than whatever Helvetica-esque nonsense we have in the end zone now. I still don’t get that decision.

The more and more I read about Manziel, the more nervous I get about him and it’s not like I give a rip what happens to Texas A&M. I just care about college football and love it. This guy can’t get to the NFL fast enough to suit me.

Johnny thinks the NCAA, if it were in working order, would be on him or his strippers trying to find out who or what just cut a deal with Johnny. They think Johnny’s going to import a case of them together. And Johnny’s got a proven sales method – he jumps. Johnny’s got a backer. Johnny’s jumping for dollars. Johnny and his agent are going to get rich.

You can already buy Johnny Walker in the liq……nevermind. Well, they did make a movie called “Johnny Be Good” that pretty much covers his recruitment.

Tweak the uniforms just enough to generate a temporary bump in sales to the merch retailers. Planned obsolescence. Apple, Nike, they all do it. I would feel better about it if I was confident UGA’s cut would go toward making it’s athletic teams and facilities better.
