Damn it, it’s a scandal if we say it is.

This is the most Red & Black-y header I’ve seen yet.  Although I feel certain they’re bound to top it one day.

    If they weren’t already, the Red & Black has become an embarassment to UGA. I simply cannot believe the editors would allow something like that to go to print. When you’ve got a Bama guy defending Auburn (in the comments), I think it’s safe to say you failed miserably. Good Lord that article was garabge. Now, cue responses of “he’s just a kid, lay off.”

      But you can’t deny that he secured his admission to a law school somewhere with the, “Motion to impeach” closing line which 4 of 5 admission officers think is procedurally better than asking, “What’s the verdict?” when you already know it’s Dentyne.

      I had to confirm that was a school paper. In their defense, they do seem toe adequately preparing the students for a career as a modern journalist.

    The Red and Black’s independence is a great thing… and this kid isn’t a journalism major… but someone from Grady or the paper’s advisors need to step in before something like this goes to print. The headline’s ridiculous, but it’s reflective of the piece itself and that’s the problem. You do get some leeway in an opinion column as opposed to a news article, but a simple fact check would have wiped out so much of that column it’s not even funny. That column is a kid who’s a Georgia fan who hates Auburn who has heard these rumors at tailgate parties and now he’s printing them as facts. That’s a damn shame. The R&B’s independence from UGA was supposed to be a good thing. It’s not supposed to pave the way for shoddy reporting that devalues the degree of anyone who passed through the Grady College, as I did.

      That’s the thing. They cannot legally do it. Cannot. Legally. Do it. Like it or lump it. It’s settled law. I’m a Grady grad (got two degrees from there, actually) that advised a student newspaper at one large Southern university for six years, and I’m now the adviser to an even larger one. You cannot stop them. You can beg, plead, whatever, but that’s the limit of your “stepping in.” You cannot say “This will not be printed.”

        And if you don’t see the thing at all before it goes to print, and don’t have a damn clue about it until it does, oh, well. They’re not legally required to let you read it at all before they print it. It’s by invitation only.

    I don’t think it was THAT bad of a piece. The part about the Newtons was factually incorrect, but the premise of the opinion column was if “it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck…” and the joke that Emmert and the NCAA have become. And the part about Ware and Adidas, I did notknow about. That is sickening.

      Seems like we are missing his point, and maybe that is his fault, but I agree…he says Emmert is a douche with a douche-like history of douchiness….and we are offended by that?

      I suspect whoever wrote the headline thought it would be taken to mean something other than the way it seems to be taken here.

    Wait a minute! We are dissing a blog post that disses Auburn, Emmert and the NCAA plus Adidas?…..oh….it’s not a blog post?…well…..it looked like one. Imagine that the name Shirkey will be sought for use by some on here. At least the author gets that notoriety – all rants will be termed “Shirkey”s in the future, i. e., “Someone posted a Shirkey about FU today”.
