This is how prejudice starts, y’all.

If Finebaum is perceived as somehow representative of us denizens of the South, does that mean the rest of the country is going to start wondering why we tongue bathe Nick Saban so much?

    He thinks Alabama is the only state in the south since they have no pro football team or baseball team. He needs to broaden his horizons.

    Saw the note in the paper this morning that he had been hired.
    does the world Wide Leader think only Tide fans will be watching the SEC network? Can’t imagine a worse way to kick off the new network.

    Count me as 100% wrong in believing ESPN would bring his circus to town. In some senses, he would SEEM to ME the antithesis of what they look for. They like personalities who state the obvious without much research who are heavy on cliches but sound interesting when they say it. If they say something controversial, it won’t be culturally insensitive NOR will it land them in broader media. Finebaum strikes me as one who might do that.

    That said, while I think his comments about the South that the Senator took issue with were unnecessary to make the point he was trying to make. He could have said, “College football is king in SEC country. Fans are passionate. the quality of play is high, and I am thrilled to make my living connected to it. I can’t wait to lend my perspectives to a more national audience.”

    Personally, I find Gameday virtually “unwatchable” except for the fact that they are covering a subject near and dear to my heart. Maybe he changes that dynamic a bit. I will be curious as to how he “fits” in and what marginal insight he brings.

    Obviously, telling us that Nick Saban is a GREAT coach and has a PROCESS is hardly insightful nor is suggesting that Auburn football will get better over time. Auburn is not a 3-9 program that goes winless in the SEC. Really? Who knew?

    will be interested to see what he offers in the future other than the obvious…

      Have you been paying any attention to what ESPN commentators have been doing lately? They all are doing what Finebaum is doing from Skip Bayless (the nation’s Finebaum) to Chris Broussard to Rob Parker. ESPN wants to “embrace debate” because they think it does two things

      1. drive ratings
      2. create additional storylines beyond the game stories to drive additional ratings and put ESPN’s name in the greater pop culture

    ESPN screeners will allow Tammie and crowd through to Paul for a month or two to attract listeners but will ultimately have to weed the rural Alabama crowd out if they want to keep a national audience. After a year his show won’t resemble his old show. He will also have to depend on scandals because Paul’s grasp of the facts and football strategy is often lacking.

    Paul Finebaum, much like Nancy Grace, is what people who hate the South think the entire South is like, sort of like people who hate New York think everyone there is like Joy Behar. In both cases, they’re just arrogant know-it-alls with an unfortunately large media platform. Rub two morons together and it’s ratings GOLD, Jerry…..GOLD.

    Didn’t watch ESPN before and will continue to never watch Finebaum. When everyone realizes he doesn’t know anything past his state they will tune out as well. Guess his face will appear on screen at my sports bar, but with the sound off, attempted mimicry should be fun.

    We already hold him in low esteem so we start ahead of the game with our prejudices. Considering that the Uppa’ U S will find out soon enough, it will be interesting to read stories of his undoing while the Nawth writhes.
