I guess this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, given SOD’s need to attend to proper shower etiquette, but academically speaking, Tennessee’s football program is in a world of hurt.
The NCAA released its annual Academic Progress Rates on Tuesday, and Tennessee’s single-year APR of 909 in 2011-12 dropped the Vols’ multiyear score to 924.
Beginning next year, teams whose APR multiyear score dips below 930 or a two-year average of 940 will face possible postseason bans. The NCAA approved raising the minimum threshold from 900 two years ago.
This has truly been a joint effort.
The Vols’ current four-year APR score encompasses the end of Phillip Fulmer’s tenure as coach, Lane Kiffin’s one season at Tennessee and the first two seasons under Derek Dooley. A total of 33 players from the last four signing classes either transferred, left the program for academic, disciplinary or personal reasons or never made it to campus. After the single-year APR jumped from 928 (2008-09) and 921 (2009-10) to 934 in 2010-11, it again dropped significantly.
To escape the academic bowl ban, UT’s next APR score needs to wind up somewhere north of 950. Given that the best the Vols have done is 934, that seems a tall order. So we’re looking at a potential situation where Tennessee gets that magical sixth win for the first time in a while, but still can’t go bowling. Gee, maybe I ought to put up a reader poll to see whether the schadenfreude would be greater for the Urnge to have another losing season, or to get shut down over grades. Nah, I’m not that cruel… at least publicly.
You can spell Bowl without UT …

This isn’t even a close call. Losing seasons for the Rocky Toppers until the end of time would be just about right, far as I’m concerned.

Senator, you give these criminal too little credit.
The GPA of the football program just got a 1 point higher with the publication of that report. They will manipulate the system in every possible way to engineer the results they need. The AD will figure out a way for players to get credits from every corrupt for profit online diploma mill to that count towards their UT course load and surely the NCAA will be five steps behind.

You beat me to it. I don’t believe for ONE SECOND that a 6+ win UT team will be sitting home during the bowl season. Either the APR miraculously increases, or they will get some sort of exemption. Period.

Right, G. But of course the Vols would still have to win at least 6 to get to a bowl anyway and that’s not happening anytime soon.

Half of Bill Connelly’s Magic Eight Ball would challenge you to a duel:
“There are two ways to look at Tennessee’s 2013 schedule:
A) Holy crap, three road games versus top-five teams? Five against the top 20? This is the hardest schedule in the country!
B) Hmm, seven games versus teams projected 39th or worse? Yeah, Tennessee can get back to a bowl this year.
Calling this schedule top-heavy doesn’t really do it justice. Tennessee plays only two teams projected between ninth and 49th, with between four and five built-in losses and between three and five built-in wins (depending on your level of optimism). Those middle games — South Carolina, at Missouri, Vanderbilt — will probably dictate whether the Vols go bowling for the first time in three years.”

South Carolina is not a middle game my friend, Tennessee is not in the same league. Not sure that the same might not be true for Vandy.

Maybe Bill thinks that after Georgia pounds South Carolina, Spurrier just won’t be the same for the remainder of the season

In addition, I don’t see UT beating Mizzou in Columbia (Mizzou beat ’em in KnoxVegas last year) or beating Vandy (who also beat UT last year–quite badly).

Jones has a strong APR track record as a head coach and also has a bonus structure in his Tennessee contract tied to his team’s APR standing. Jones is on track to see his next APR score between 955-960, and according to various reports his 2011 Cincinnati team was the only BCS school to win or share its conference title, win a bowl game and lead the league in APR. In Jones’ four full seasons as the only head coach in a program, his teams posted APR numbers of 960, 947, 945 and 957 at Central Michigan and Cincinnati.

Yes but those were Brian Kelly’s student-athletes. What Butch has now are SOD/predecessor student-atheletes. If Butch doesn’t attain the goal, maybe he can partially blame Coach O for the smell of opportunity is nowhere for academics which follows O like a Cajun Joe Btfsplk: “He M-F’d me all over the place,” says DeMars. “He made me feel like a bad person for going to class.”

We all need mo’ hose.
Tenn’s APR was used up when Da Rick and others went undisciplined along with their QB. How do you expect them to be disciplined towards classroom work after that? In this case Tenn had too much undisciplined hose.

I don’t know about Butch but Coach O hates it when his inventory has to go to class. I wonder if that’s what caused Ellis Johnson to go unwinless his first and only season at Southern Miss or if it was just Ellis.

Does anyone know what the “possible bowl ban” language is about? Is it not automatic? So the NCAA has to issue a ban after soliciting a defense from TN or what?
