Today’s musical query

… comes from a comment on the GTP “About Me” page:

I have no doubt that “Dooley’s Junkyard Dawgs” is the greatest college football song ever but what is the second greatest? Is there a second?

Good questions.  I’m so dazzled by the original…

… that I’ve never given second place much consideration.

So I think I’ll open up the floor for nominations.  It can be a fight song, or anything else, as long as it has a direct college football flavor to it.  Let’s hear your choices.

I should warn you, though – anybody selecting “Zombie Nation” runs the risk of a permanent ban from here.

Va Tech’s Enter Sandman is pretty dang cool, even if it does have a distinct ACC flavor.

Anybody who suggests anything in the Techno genre should get a ban too.

Gonna get heckled for suggesting a team from the B1G, but Ohio States’ connection with “Hang on Sloopy” is pretty cool.

I’m not aware of there being any songs besides those affiliated with UGA. So I would like to humbly submit Junkyard Dawgs and Let the Big Saw Eat for consideration.

I think it’s got to be “Dawg Bite” by David Richt, right?

I’m partial to Corey Smith’s “Every Dawg”. But like JG, I’m really only familiar with Dawg songs.

    JB representing.

“Give Herschel Walker the Ball” by Albany’s Bobby Joiner was a good one, although it was a 45 single that probably didnt get much play beyond Sowega. I also nominate lewis Grizzard’s “A Bulldawg’s Prayer”…

“First they took Whiskey, then they took Dixie, now we can’t pray anymore”

You mean Zombie Nation and Sandstorm aren’t the same song?!? All that shit sounds the same to me…

As a kid in the early ’80’s I loved “Bulldawg Bite” by Crisby Clarke. I remember my dad syncing up the Munson call of “Run Lindsey Run” from that record with the VCR recording of the game.

“Man is there going to be some property DESTROYED tonight!”

I’ll likely get heckled for this but I actually like the cover of “Saturday Night’s Alright” played in Sanford Stadium prior to kickoff.

Not sure this is encompassing enough to qualify as a College Football song, but dawg fans should love it.

Why duck? If it suits you as a Dawg fight song, it suits me as well. It has action, peppy spirit and rousing good music. The music appreciation crowd is as varied as it can be on gtp. If others don’t get the music you like, so what. Never understood the pickiy little pseudos turning up their noses like they are the quintessential music appreciatorsrs.

Years ago I heard that the recorders wouldn’t give us permission to use it at games. What was that?

Well it sure ain’t Rocky Top. West Virginia does a nice bit with “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” but it’s probably not iconic enough to pass the Montana litmus test.

We also need one for the douchiest football song ever. If this doesn’t win that award, I don’t know what else would.

Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio St. are surely CFB standards, but stunned no one has nominated:

While the stuffed Harry Dawg I gave my grandson will play that song by pressing his hand, it doesn’t evoke the Dawg fighting spirit, just the go-out-and-fight-and-die spirit.

Senator, it would be a genuine hoot to compose lyrics and music to a decent UGA fight song on gtp, much like the Montana Project. With the varied musical tastes and appreciation on here, it would be a slam dunk.

First decision: A song to represent all our athletic teams or just the football team? I vote only UGA Football. Could imitate a British Pub song (The Star Spagled Banner music has already been claimed from a pub song) or lyrics or music only(Redcoats theme).

I still remember with great fondness the players and Verne dancing to Soulja Boy during the AU beat down of 2007.

Although that might help explain the refs lack of love for the Dawgs in the flag department.

Worth it for that night of joy.

LSU’s “Pre-Game Touchdown LSU” is my favorite piece of band music in all of CFB. The full version is very special, but the abbreviated one played after big plays is pretty cool too. Seem to enjoy it more when we aren’t the opponent though.

As for tosu Hand on Sloopy vote I, uh,….just don’t know what to say.

Seconded emphatically. LSU’s band is the definition of what a college marching band ought to be.

I’ll admit to liking Tech’s version of the Budweiser Song. I’ve also always liked USC’s Tribute to Troy. And I still enjoy hearing Hail to the Victors and Notre Dame’s song on a late fall as I’m watching an afternoon game up there when the shadows are really long. I may not like the teams, but those are some of the great college football sounds.

In the SEC, LSU’s Chinese Bandits and ‘Four Notes’ are good. Nothing makes me sicker than hearing the Gators play the Jaws theme… except maybe hearing Rocky Top for the 50th time, or Rama Jama. Ugh, awful.

I’m proud that the Redcoats have kept our traditional battery of things to play after first downs/defensive stops/etc. We have a lot of unique things we do. Glad that we never jumped on fads like the Darth Vader/Empire March and things like that.
