So, Oregon dodges the proverbial bullet in the Willie Lyles matter – no bowl ban and a one-scholarship loss for each of two years. Oh, and Chip Kelly gets slapped with an eighteen-month show-cause penalty, which I’m sure will cause him many sleepless nights as he game plans for the next Eagles game.
Bottom line here appears to be that it’s okay to write a $25,000 check to a sketchy recruiting dude as long as you’re sorry about it and cooperate with the investigation.
It really is a waste of time to expect any consistency out of the NCAA.

Georgia essentially got more for AJ selling his jersey at 1/25th of what Oregon paid that guy.
It is hard to get upset any more with NCAA. But honestly, if I were USC and Pat Hayden, I would be madder than hell. Seeing what Ohio State, Oregon and UNC got for their offenses and knowing that Miami is likely to skate as well is patently ridiculous.

The NCAA missed a golden opportunity here. They should have levied a fairly hefty fine on Oregon… say $100 million. It would help pay for their losses in O’bannon, and Nike would have foot the bill anyway.

Good. The sooner schools/boosters can pay recruits what the market will bear, the better.
Until the NCAA de-regulates, it will always have inconsistent and arbitrary enforcement, leading to “grey-market” strategies. Deregulation leads to a cleaner and more even playing field.

The NCAA is a bureaucracy in charge of sports marketing run by lawyers and campus administrators. That’s 0-4 right there. What do you expect? Every decision protects $$$. How is that not consistent?
