“… but I don’t think you can assume that the stadium’s going to fill itself.”

As UT grapples with attendance problems at Neyland Stadium, at least you can say the athletic department hasn’t stooped to the level of “four tickets, four hot dogs, four Cokes”.

Yet.

They can always repaint the seat numbers… spread it out a bit.

Exactly. The current “seats” there are what, 24″ across?

You said it, Stoop. I have sat in the lower bowl with UT alums and was moderately comfortable. I have also sat in the nosebleeds with our people… Well, “sat” might be a stretch. Maybe “stood sidesaddle so close to the person next to me that I could smell their ear wax while clapping one-handed against my leg” is more accurate.

Ah, the old 3 game package. That was my ticket to getting seats at Bobby Dodd until the nerds got tired of more Dawg fans at the game than Jackets. Wonder if Vandy fans or better yet, Bama fans (when the game is in Tenn) can outnumber the uranges.

I still remember one year a Thursday night game against Maryland was part of the UGA game package, and a ton of Dawg fans around the greater Atlanta area went, in gameday attire, and were even on ESPN.

And then there was the 2008 game in Tempe when so many Dawg fans were snapping up cheap Arizona State season tickets that the school banned orders from Georgia zip codes.

“On Thursday afternoon, Neyland Stadium was empty, except for a crew of maintenance workers with pressure washers who were blasting the cement walkways.”

The emptiness and hose usage on cleaning equipment for hard-surface blasting in the arena that SOD would have called the British Neyland Stadium (had he not been prematurely relieved of duty) served as a wistful but somehow triumphant reminder that, like the Germans, the fans were not showing up

  5. The comments at the bottom are great entertainment. Vandy fans remind me of Tech fans when they beat us once every ten years. The UT fans are just sad. Two fan bases arguing over second worst in the SEC eat.

Will never feel sorry for their troubles, UT fans are morons who don’t realize they have ever been anything special. Their biggest claim to fame was taking an 85K seat stadium and chopping it into 105K partial seats. Always were, and always will be, wannebes. I would really like to see them pick themselves up a bit, they have been an embarrasment to the SEC the past few years. Had the SEC and NCAA not overlooked their indiscretions for the years Fullmer was playing the snitch for Kramer, and letting players flunk 3 drug tests and still play on Saturdays, they would have been 2nd tier SEC for the last 2 decades. Screw’em, one of the most obnoxious fanbases in the SEC, and I can’t really figure out why. Next to Florida and SC, may be the least intelligent group of CFB fans in the southeast.

I don’t like UT either, Mac, but claiming they were never “anything special” is taking it a bit far. Robert Neyland was phenomenally successful and they are second all-time in the SEC in both winning % and SEC titles. That’s nothing to sneeze at.

I don’t really ever see them returning to their glory years, however. The recruiting disadvantages they face I think will prove to be too much to overcome unless they can find a Saban caliber coach. It could happen at some point, of course, but I don’t see it happening.

Yeah, Tennessee has been special. Storied program that now has deficiencies exposed. Ask Dooley, Goff, Donnan and Richt if UT matters.

Perhaps not totally expressing the whole thought, or doing it well. Intent was to say the UT fanbase I have been exposed to, and that was substantial in numbers as I lived in TN for 12 years, looked down their nose and minimized other programs. That was what I meant about “anything special”.

With 13 SEC titles, certainly they have had some excellent years and accomplishments but the arrogance and tunnel vision attitudes make me feel they need to be reminded that there are other programs deserving of respect. And that doesn’t even get into the advantage they had on not being investigated to the same degree other programs were. I feel it was because they had been the snotch in several instances and were given immunity….but I cannot prove that, it just drives my dislike of them. I understand your point, but I feel them wallowing in the basement is payback. I still think they “aren’t special” very much like a dozen or so other programs around the country, but I would put them in the Top Tier of the SEC which isn’t shabby. I also look forward to them being in driven into the bottom tier for another decade.

The price of tickets for the Vandy game vs the other SEC teams should make some good bulletin board material for the Commadores.
