Last Friday, McDowell made an appearance at UGA’s Dawg Night prospect camp and had a long conversation with Bulldogs coach Mark Richt.
“I had it in the back of my head that Georgia would be a good place, but I didn’t think I would be happy there at the end of the day,” McDowell said. “It’s because of the trouble the players get into, and stuff like that. I didn’t want to take that risk to be around that.”
UGA already has two safeties committed for 2014, including last Friday’s addition of 4-star Kendall Gant of Lakeland, Fla.
“I feel a connection there but then again, there were a lot of safeties already committed to them,” McDowell said. “So I just wanted to go somewhere where I could set my name in stone and compete (for playing time) early.”

Actually, the kid apparently wants to be a DEA agent when he grows up. That would suggest that he’s not interested in doing drugs. It’s still a serious misconception he has about UGA vs UT, though.

I read his comments and had the same thought. It sounded like he was repeating a pitch he’d heard from a coach. It’s been said over and over, but the only thing UGAs policies due is make it harder on them to win games. It’s not stopping the behavior at all.

Good riddens…all he had to say was “i appreciate the offers from UGA and Auburn. I am excited to join UT.” that’s it. He chose to feed the media a line, and in the process made himself sound stupid. He should fit in well in Knoxville.

Eh, I see it differently. He seemed to sincerely speak his mind. He didn’t knock the Georgia program – just gave the honest reason why he was coming here. He should have kept his thoughts to himself as it makes him look bad, but I don’t think he meant any harm by it. Like it or not, it is a valid point that players that come here are at a disadvantage both from a marketing and legal perspective.

How so? The NFL asks about their habits and if smoking mj is one of them, they dare not lie, no matter whether suspended for games or no action taken. His excuses are weak and that of a dunderhead.
“I can’t compete with the Ss that UGA already has.” would have been a better statement.It appears that there is no doubt that we wanted him, so there’s that for him.
If Slive would weigh the equalization of punishments, none of this need happen. Mr. SEC put a ribbon on that one for Slive, but predicts he won’t touch it. Pome d’ Rue!

Despite the NFL mj questioning being applicable, the lost playing time is both bad preparation for the NFL and bad publicity in general. Mama and the folks back home don’t know what you tell the NFL. Neither do fans, sponsors, stats or post-season awards.
As for the legal issues, a football player leaving college with a criminal record is more likely in Athens (all other factors being the same). Not only do things not get covered up, the police are looking to make examples.
The competetion is a valid point, but I don’t think this is the only factor.
I agree about the equalization of punishments. But this is not happening – this is a disadvantage of coming here.

This reflects far more poorly on DaRick, err, I mean McDowell than it does on UGA. So the kid is intimidated by the competition AND the rules – maybe our tougher policies are a good thing if they drive a kid with this attitude away.
