Rome wasn’t built in a day, and apparently neither is the SEC’s 2014 football schedule.
It’s his ability to plan for the long term that makes Mike Slive a paragon among conference commissioners.

“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
The ACC has 14 teams and that wild card in Notre Dame and they have been able to figure it out. This is ridiculous.

If you care about the permanent rivalry games in the SEC you should be very wary of what Slime is saying. At SEC Media Days he strongly hinted that “for the good of the conference as a whole” some teams may have to give up rivalry games to make a 9 conference game schedule work. The failure to go ahead and announce the SEC schedules for ’14 and ’15 is part of this. The schedules actually are supposed to be set 6 years out. The fact that they are taking this long means that Slime wants maximum flexibility for change purposes. Don’t be surprised if we have a 9 game SEC schedule adopted soon without “traditional rivalry games.”

Maybe Slive needs to follow some of his own veiled words to the NCAA and get off his ass and do something. Of course, he was probably working too hard at his brag brag speech.
Yes, yes, I know what he’s doing. He won’t release it until after Media Days, therefore the media won’t have it so easy to go around and get all the whiners comments about “being fair” and whatever Spurrier and his toadies have to say.

Short answer: he’s gotta wait to see who the worst projected teams will be in the SEC East so they know who to send to Tuscaloosa.

Actually, they’ll make that one of Bama’s away games and change one of their tough SEC games to Tuscaloosa.
