It’s tough grasping the natural order of things sometimes. It’s almost at a point where I’d enjoy Carolina winning the game and getting shut out of Atlanta for the third straight year, just to get another irked quote. Unfortunately with the scheduling shoe on the other foot this time, I don’t think the Dawgs are going to have that luxury. Game two’s gonna be a biggie. They’ll have to risk irking Clowney in a different way.

You know, that’s an excellent question. Clowney hasn’t matched Thomas’ production, but I’d argue he’s more physically gifted than Thomas. Both pretty much define what a dominant player is.

Thanks. I never got to see much of Thomas but the tail end of his pro career. His numbers are otherworldly though in sacks, and that was for an era that didn’t pass as much, and thus gave DEs and LBs fewer opportunities for sacks.

I like this fantasy world they live in…you get to pick one game per year, and if you win that one game, you deserve to go to the SEC Championship game, regardless of what you did the rest of the season. It sure would make it easier to get there every year. Unfortunately, that is not the way they drew up the rules of the conference, rules that had to be drawn up as a direct consequence of SC and Arkansas being added, by the way (irony, FTW).

You know, that’s an excellent assessment. I’ve considered how much Clowney was/is in Murray’s head, but it definitely does appear that UGA is very very much in Clowney (and the rest of USC’s) head as well.

Absolutely hell no is it acceptable to lose to USC jr much less lose 4 in a row. We need to remind these clowns in September who they are: a loser school from a loser state with a loser football tradition to match. There’s a reason Aaron Murray has made more sec championship game appearances than their program as a whole, and that reason is because their natural place in life is the second tier. I am beyond tired of their endless chirping and simultaneous bitching about our “soft” schedule. How ’bout they can talk when the crowning achievement of their program isn’t a capital one bowl win. In the mean time we really need to beat these assholes and shut them the hell up.

In addition to their endless bitching about the schedule, they managed to turn into a national meme that shows up in the comments of virtually every ESPN article we’re mentioned in–while Alabama gets a pass! Normally I would not trifle with stupid ESPN commenters, but it is a bit of a bellwether to what the rest of the sports nation thinks.
I’m not a fan of being accused of being handed division titles because of scheduling inequities. I want kick their asses but good this year.

We have to beat South Carolina and we need to beat Clemson as well. I understand the Clemson game doesn’t count in the conference. But I believe we need a good start in order to finish well. Georgia has a stronger schedule than the last couple of years and an inexperienced secondary. We need the confidence boost of a strong start.

I want us to run that crackback toss sweep on the first play of the game to his side and get in his head. The next play is to put Lynch on that side and run downhill right at him behind a double team with the fullback lead on the outside linebacker. We do to him exactly what Alabama did to Jarvis in the SECCG.

That works as well. I just don’t want us to be intimidated by him. I want us to be able to use the full capabilities of our offense. Remember last year in Columbia, we started with a great running play outside with Gurley, Bobo decided to get cute with an end-around to Mitchell, and then Murray had the tipped ball pick.

Both of you should not lose attention from the rest of SC’s D line. “Go away from him” isn’t going to get you shit since (to me at least) they have the line that FU thinks (foolishly) they have/wish for. We have to play and block better than any other game. We have to take it, not wait for fate to give us or them a break. We will see the mettle of these Dawgs at Clemson.

I agree. USCe may have the best front 4 in the SEC. I am interested to know who is going to replace Devin Taylor because Taylor/Clowney were a terrific combination at DE.

All this talk is great, but my question is how do the two teams match up on paper. With the exception of Clowney and perhaps another defensive player, where is Usc superior to us? It’s not at QB, RB or other skill positions. Nor is it on the OL. DLine? LB’s? DB’s?
We should win the game by 2 touchdowns.

Dline, they’re better. DB’s, they’re better. Not sure there are any other areas of clear advantage… except, maybe special teams… because, you know, special teams.

I would say then their strengths match up pretty well with ours. Their DL vs. our six returning O-linemen. Our veteran WR’s vs. their DB’s. I like our match up with them better than our match up with Clempsun; their WR’s vs our rookie DB’s.

DL is a big advantage for SoCar, and having a big advantage on the DL can mean winning the game. The DBs are better than UGAs on paper, but the lost a ton from last year in Swearinger and Holloman (sp?). They also lost their entire 2-deep at LB.

Senator, I completely agree on the D line and DBs. Special Teams is in the air for both teams. Overall, I don’t think their D is as good as Ellington has produced, but they are no bunch of dummies.

I’d hold off on that DB and DL comparison just yet. I’m not sure our DL isn’t going to be pretty good. We don’t have Clowney, but our other guys might be as good or better than theirs. I just don’t think South Carolina will be able to score to keep up with us. Though we got to play them later in the year last year, we were still kind of finding our groove offensively.
Dawgs are gonna roll through September…book it.
Now, that game in Knoxville is gonna be a death match. We’re going to spend a lot on those 3 September games and we’ll be out of gas by Neyland. We’ll win on talent, but it won’t be as comfortable as you think it’s going to be.

Oh, I’m not saying UT will be undefeated or good, it’s just that game in a bad spot. 7 days after a bloodbath with a heavy-weight like LSU, on the road, historic program looking for a defining victory in season 1 of a new regime. We might be banged up. We’ll probably win something terribly ugly like 18-14 with a late pick to seal the game.
The closer the Clemson game gets, the more I think we’re just really way better than them. LSU would have run them out of the dome if they had coaches with brains. I expect Gurshall to obliterate their D while their fancy O sits on the sidelines and watches a power running game in person.
And South Carolina embarrassed us last year, and I don’t think our guys have forgotten. We’ve got some leaders like Garrison, Aaron, and Burnette who are there on a mission. Clemson’s trying to get in the talk. South Carolina’s trying to get in SECCG. We’re trying to get to Pasadena. I think we’ll see the difference in those mindsets early on. Our guys desperately want the Tide again in that Dome.

One of our challenges this year is that we have to find our offensive groove in the first quarter of the first game. Something we haven’t exactly done the last couple years. If we struggle for the first couple of games we could easily start 0-2. With so many young guys starting that’s not a place we want to be.

True, but it’s a lot easier to find a groove when you can hand it off to #3. Passing games take time to develop. #3 is ready today. It’s basic football. We’re going to hand it to this guy, and you can’t tackle him. We’re going to ride him the first 2 weeks. 6.2 yard per carry as a freshman. That was without a year of SEC weight-lifting. Herschel never scored in Death Valley. Gurley’s gonna score twice. He’s the best player in the nation, brother. By about 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 7, everyone else is going to have that figured out.

Don’t forget that both of those teams have pretty good RBs and it’s up to our new D to stop the ground game that our old D couldn’t. This year we get to figure out early if Grantam is to blame for that.

I love Jordan Jenkins. I thought he played as well as Jarvis at the end of last year. Multiple teams tried to run reverses at him and never were able to get him to bite.

None of us want to see the elephant in the room. He is improved from last year, he ended his season as a hugh confidence booster against Michigan and he stands 6’6″, 276 and Monday ran a 4.46sec 40 yd dash.

He’s the best player in the country regardless of position and has a good set of defensive linemen that can help him out. The real question is whether USCe has the offense that can compete. No Lattimore and Connor Shaw played his best game against us. If our defense can hold up and we don’t have a disaster with special teams and turnovers, I think we have a good chance to win.
