Until I see them do well in a game, they’ll make me nervous, but I have to admit I’m enjoying the attitude of this year’s bunch of new defensive backs.
I’m probably most intrigued by Shaq Wiggins because he lacks the size we’ve been told the staff likes to see in its DBs. But he just sounds… pesky.
“They have the confidence and the swagger that you’d like to see in a DB,” said Scott-Wesley, a redshirt sophomore receiver. “Shaq, he’s very, how do I say this? He’s like a bumblebee. He’s always in your ear, he’s always there. He’s a fiery guy. A fast-guy.”
Really pesky.
“Shaq, we all know he’s a feisty little dude,” Langley said. “He’s a great cover corner. He’s coming up and making big plays in the running game. You really can’t ask for more.”
There’s going to be an adjustment period, of course. These kids are honest enough to admit they’ve still got a way to go with technique and recognition. But you’ve got to hope that with eight new faces, some of them are going to become serious contributors, and quickly. There’s too much talent in that group for some of it not to emerge.
Put it this way:
“Our freshmen, they’re good,” Johnson said. “This is Georgia. This is the SEC. They’re not going to hire no sorry players.”

The happy talk is strong with this group…..man I hope it’s true…or at least 75% true…

See? They get it, schollies are considered great compensation. Now you boys move along with all this talk of stipends and getting paid five figures for writing skills. They might do that elsewhere but in Athens our guys are content because we aren’t out on the town running up bar tabs, gambling, etc. That’s what you get when you get the leftover 99% of the top 1%.

I try to temper myself with stuff like this and think back to guys like Jordan Jenkins … He was a beast last year, but admitted that it takes a while to get up to speed … we don’t have time for that this year.

Considering AM only had 10 picks last year, I’d say getting an int is a big deal for a newbee. Got to say I’m very pleased with the way things are going so far – a very quiet off season, followed by no major injuries in camp (knock on wood).
Mark it down. Getting those 31 recruits is going to make a huge difference this season – and during the next couple years.

Yes. And the fact that they flew all over the secondary demonstrates innate skills that good coaching can bring along. Right now they have the speed to overcome some positional mistakes, but will have to rely more on training to improve to starting every game for an SEC team. The fact that they have instincts and speed to match is a wonderful starting point for these Freshmen.

A high percentage of these guys are going to contibute, which ones and how fast is unclear, but the more talent and the less deadwood we have at every position group makes for more competition, which hopefully should lead to better results.
I have to say as optimistic, as I am, and i think my massive consumption of kool-aid is evident in my posts here, I did not like the message of Mason’s comments. Not that I disagreed with him…quite the contrary. I was frustrated that a team that supposedly has good leadership could not push through and right themselves. If you read Lynch’s comments, he basically said, “the INTs got us off track, and we never totally regained our bearings”. EGAD! Columbia anyone?
that said, I think JHC and Matthews will transform our defense in ways that Rambo and Williams could not. I think the corners will be solid. the key is guys like Johnson, fluker, langley, and shaq picking things up quickly so we have enough to go 5 and 6 DBs when needed and giving us depth.

I liked the ink that Langley got recently where he said that Wilkerson, his roommate (out for the year) had helped him learn the playbook beginning several months ago in order that he did pick things up quickly.

Am and the passing game. Not only does Richt and Bobo have a play book for Murray, they have a prayer book next to it for him. Worried now about the timing, but it is early, and Friend is still testing his boys. More worried about the D and running game now. How many completions will they give up? And if they do get one, how quickly does AM give it back. Has Wiggins even played against top SEC TE and WRs. He’ll damn sure get his chance against SOS real quickly…see what his progess his at the end of 1st SEC game…let’s don’t start another season in the hole and AM on his backside most of the game.
