I don’t know if it’s a measurement of respect for the closeness of last year’s SECCG, how loaded Georgia appears to be on offense, or what, but one thing’s sure: the Dawgs aren’t sneaking up on anybody this season.

“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
The Gators weren’t picked by a single pundit to win the East? I wonder the last time that happened.

And we all know what happens when GA is over-hyped – flash back to 2008. I need some propping up because I’m just not feeling it for 2013. A wacky QB, uproven and small D-line, secondary full of holes and no kicking game. Where are you Mayor – ye of great optimism?

Wacky QB? Yikes!
I share your trepidation when it comes to the high expectations for 2013, but Aaron Murray is one solid source of comfort. I thought the Murray-bashing was in the distant past.

That is disturbing. I don’t know what his/her definition of “wacky” is but if Aaron Murray fits it I am in an alternate universe. If there has ever been a level-headed, grounded, dedicated athlete/student/citizen at UGA I am sure I don’t recall it. You can say you prefer a Johnny Moron gunslinger, or a guy that is 6′ 5″, at QB, but in our offense AM is damned near the model of what you want.

Oh yeah, I keep thinking it is a team sport, sorry. All the blame is on the HC and QB, thanks for reminding me of that level of “thinking”. Get us another QB Richt (oh that’s right, you have been fired by the UGA geniuses….well, whatever your name is get us a better QB. Let me see, who would I want if I could choose of all the other 119 schools, and maybe some backups. Um, help me here, drawing a blank, may have to stick with that wacky Murray guy who loves UGA so much, spends all that time preparing, returns for his fifth year, and will hold virtually all significant passing records in the SEC before December. Tough being stuck like that.

I’d add something, but I think you pretty much nailed it.

If our D-line is “small”, I’d hate to see a large one.

Let’s start a list of whacky college QBs.
I’ll start with Stephen Garcia

You win. I was thinking Mustain but then realized he had a strong case to blame genetics.

Interesting to see Western Kentucky ranked and uT unranked. Wonder what the odds are of Petrino slipping out of Kentucky with an upset and follow that with another in Knoxvegas. Would there be another mattress burning? The graffitti on the Vol rock would be outstanding no?

2008 rears it ugly head for me too. I can’t shake the feeling that the Defense will surprise and the Offense will disappoint. It just seems UGA always performs contrary to their supposed strengths and weaknesses.

But the offense/defense expectations are driven by hype from media and uniformed fans, none of whom see practice or have conversations with trainers. I think you are right, the defense will exceed expectations and the offense will not score 40 every week. That is the natural order of things when we have access to thousands of opinions/interviews weekly, many be the headline hyperbole of the media….it will almost always be exaggerated and in the “gray” area with nothing quite as awful or fantastic as believed.
Like you, I think fans will grumble about the offense because they do not believe anyone can contain all our weapons, and be surprised about the talent on our defense because all our NFL talent last year only ranked around 30th in the nation.

I think the media world finally realized UGA had a national champ worthy team after SEC champ game. Throw in occasional flop (USCe)

I’m late on this one, but one thing to point out…the median rank on those is between 6 and 7 and if you throw out the two outliers (1 and 12), you probably end up with a #7 ranking.
All the haters seem to love the 2008 comparisons…and maybe that’s just a reflection of the youth of the folks that think “UGA never does well when they are hyped” and has based their collective wisdom on the last 5-7 years of history.
The 2008 comps just don’t sit with me…in 2008, you had a preseason #1 ranking, clear flaws in the defense that were being overlooked, you lost your All SEC starting LT in preseason camp, and the ranking was based upon star power rather than depth.
To me…if you are looking for a reason on why they flop…feels more like 2004 than 2008. You set up the schedule with big games early…the 2004 LSU game was so hyped and then you had the let down the following week against Tennessee…although, this team reminds me of the best team in the SEC in 2004 (Auburn) more than the 2004 Georgia team.
