Sailors also suggested that even had Mettenberger remained in Athens, there was a chance he would have transferred anyway assuming he would not have beaten Murray for the starting quarterback job.
“He had a really good spring game, I don’t think you can argue that, but I think Murray was ahead of him by that time anyway,” Sailors said.
C’mon, man, that G-Day game was everything. At least that’s what a friend of my second cousin who knows somebody who read something on a message board said. Sailors is wrong.
Next, he’ll tell us that Murray deserves to start ahead of Mason. Eh, what do current players know about stuff like that anyway…

Can we as a fan base stay out of the ‘Let’s bring up the arrest record of a kid that grew up in Oconee Co., has a mother that works for the UGA Athletic Department, and for all purposes, seems to be taking a humble approach to the game?
Honestly.

Corn dogs wearing LSU helmets, Les Miles’ face photo shopped on the body of the guy on Swamp People that wears the overalls shirtless and the bandana on his head, a sign that says “the Pelican Brief was the worst Grisham film adaptation,” using the state of LA to make an L in the word in the phrase “Civil code is for the French, Spanish, Quebec and Losers”, etc.
All would be clever.
I’m worried about pelicans hung in effigy, references to Katrina/Floods/Oil Spills, and, of course, references to Mettenberger or Hill’s arrests/incidents. Dawg fans…please self-police. It’s ok to be hostile while still being human beings.

going 0-4 and getting outscored 31 – 130(!) in 4 games covered by college gameday seems like a really poor showing by gtu. i would assume that is the worst record/peformance of any FBS school in the history of the show. is suckitude something that can be proven by science?

Georgia Tech has been a part of College Gameday? Were they playing North Dakota State?

Given Ryan Seacrest is a Georgia grad and Jeremy Hill is LSU’s top vote getter, you could always go with an “LSU Idol” angle.

The best stuff in the piece, to me, is the stuff about Miles’ niece, daughter and the joking about Mett’s mama…Makes Miles sound actually real…maybe I won’t throw that brick after all. 🙂

I vividly recall calling in to Petro Papadakis’ show on Fox Sports Radio while travelling in NC on business and eviscerating him for suggesting Mett should be the starter. Told him flat out he was basing his opinion on just the spring game and as a former player he should know better than that. Spring practice counts for much more and, by all accounts, Murray badly outplayed Mett.
He grudgingly agreed…

My buddy and I were talking about Mett vs Murray and got to thinking about an over/under on how many comments from Gameday to the broadcast itself we’ll deal with in regards to that spring game. I think 6 is a solid number.

How about a sign of Mett holding up several Heismans with “Spring Practice” transcribed on the Heismans?

all that should have mattered, obviously, is who had the higher QBR in that spring game.

I’m one of the people that has expressed frustration with Murray from time to time. There is no doubt that week in and week out Georgia has the best chance to win with Murray on the field. Having said that, I still believe there were moments in his career when it would have done both he and the team some good to give someone else some snaps. While he doesn’t always have the blocking he deserves, no one can deny that Aaron can be his own worst enemy. Often at the most inopportune times. Generally speaking, his most damaging mistakes occur when he tries to do too much. Because of the perception that “he can’t win the big games” he probably won’t eclipse the reputation of David Greene in the minds of many fans, despite superior stats.

Interesting comments. Kind of tying this in with the North Texas thread earlier, I wonder how many people remember David Greene leading us to that 16-13 romp over UAB in 2003. Also, Greenie was 1-3 against Florida. Murray is 2-1. I don’t mean to disparage Greene because he’s one of my top 3 favorite dawgs of all time. Just want to point out the incredible hypocrisy through which people view Murray. The expectations are just off the charts for UGA now, which is a good thing, if you have perspective.

if we won the SEC this year I’d imagine there’s no way you can debate he’s the greatest QB of the Richt era. And yes even if that championship came after getting our doors blown off by LSU then pulling a major upset of the West champ.

Sorry meant “there’s no way you can debate he’s NOT the greatest QB of the Richt era”

I like both QBs, but speaking as one who suffered through the Goff/Donnan days, Greene cemented his place in lore because it was under his reign that hope returned to the Dawg nation. The 02 title didn’t hurt either.

Beat LSU, Florida and Bama in the dome and he’ll surpass Greenie in bulldog lore. He’s a DGD and probably the best QB we’ve ever had. Since his first start, we have put the games on his shoulders to win, something we’ve rarely done with other QBs, except maybe Stafford as a freshman.

Well, I did say “probably.” But you are correct, if Murray beats LSU, Florida and Bama in the dome he will surpass Greenie in Bulldog lore. Even without doing those things, statistically, he will be the best we’ve ever had. Murray is, was and always will be a DGD. I was simply pointing out that Greene was more beloved in the eyes of many fans and generally didn’t face the criticism Murray does. Whether or not that’s fair is a whole different thread.

The Hobnail Boot and the TD pass at Auburn guarantee Greene’s place in the Pantheon. Everything else he did is gravy.
