Responding to a question about student-athlete compensation in the context of the Arian Foster allegations, David Cutcliffe said schools can’t pay kids the full cost of attendance because “…nobody is really getting rich off of this”.
Cutcliffe is making somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.8 million per year. Rich? As we like to say here at the blog, I do not think that word means what you think it means.
Get The Picture 
Wow. There are ways to defend not paying players, but saying “nobody is really getting rich off of this” is not one of those ways.

My preferred way to defend it is that there ARE people getting rich, and many, many of those people are former players.
Follow the money. Nobody benefits more from the rising tide of college football money than the current players who go on to be former players.

Folks, $200,000 is mega-rich compared to the vast, vast majority of people in this country. You’re making $1.8 million per to coach DUKE with the results you’re having at DUKE and you’re trying to tell me that you’re not getting rich off of it? Screw you, Cutcliffe.

College Players are getting a FREE college education, plus free meals, plus free room and board, plus some $$$ now, and if the NCAA does decide to pay them more, cheating $$$ will still happen, why, because greed happens and always will. The star athletes will always think they deserve more. It all about the greed for more money, and always will be a more and more $$$ situation. Where will it end???

Lack of leadership from the NCAA and Presidents led to this getting to the potential insurrection level of what APU could lead to; lack of foresight means they have now lost control of where this will end. Doing what was right years ago would have made this go down much easier. Poor management inevitably leads to serious problems, no one to blame but themselves.
The application of stipends to scholarships is badly needed but there needs to be a way to separate this from “all other” scholarships or it could bring the house down. Don’t know if this would work but was thinking about how “full” and “partial” scholarships are used by football, basketball, vs golf, baseball, track, etc. Why not define “full scholarships” as ones that come with spending allowances, and partials as anything less by various degrees? Seems too simple and I am sure the PC police will shoot the idea down but the thought of all scholarships not being equal already exists.

I was thinking it could be simple as making the players employees of the school and paying them minimum wage. There are limits to how many hours of practice allowed I think its 20 hours a week during the season. Not sure how/if you could distingish between scholly and non-scholly players.

Employment would require workers compensation insurance, and takes care of the medical bills and provide for indemnity payments work related injuries. While it would be expensive for the schools, it would take care of many of the health related issues that come with playing a sport.

Mac you need to behave yourself. Full Ride means everything that is necessary for you to complete your education within a reasonable amount of time. Sponsors from the CC furnish that Ride. That would be The Lindley Heflin Society, Junior League of Atlanta, Augusta National, etc. etc. No body needs to know about the details. Private funds…as my Mother used to say,” Baby, it’s not what you know, it is who you know.” It helps to know a little bit about everything.
