The wrath of Emmert

And so l’affaire Miami ends, not with a bang, but a whimper:  some scholarship losses and some minor recruiting restrictions, but the big ticket stuff – TV and postseason – remains intact and the school doesn’t get slapped with any sort of institutional penalty.  The NCAA will attempt to justify the punishment by emphasizing the cooperative nature of the school…

Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky, the chair of the Committee on Infractions, cited Miami’s “unprecedented” self-imposed penalties and “commendable” level of cooperation as factors that weighed heavily in the decision regarding further penalties.

… but the reality is that the only thing unprecedented about this was that Donna Shalala had Mark Emmert’s balls in a vice.

Keep in mind what the NCAA is walking away from here.

In 100 hours of jailhouse interviews during Yahoo! Sports’ 11-month investigation, Hurricanes booster Nevin Shapiro described a sustained, eight-year run of rampant NCAA rule-breaking, some of it with the knowledge or direct participation of at least seven coaches from the Miami football and basketball programs. At a cost that Shapiro estimates in the millions of dollars, he said his benefits to athletes included but were not limited to cash, prostitutes, entertainment in his multimillion-dollar homes and yacht, paid trips to high-end restaurants and nightclubs, jewelry, bounties for on-field play (including bounties for injuring opposing players), travel and, on one occasion, an abortion.

As bad as it all was, there was no way that Emmert was prepared to risk going to court and having the NCAA’s dirty investigative laundry aired out to dry for all to see.  Shalala knew that.  And Emmert knew that Shalala knew.

A cynic might observe that since there wasn’t any money at stake, the NCAA’s heart wasn’t in litigating, anyway.

There will be much gnashing of teeth over this decision.  I’m long past the point of being angered by the NCAA’s erratic enforcement of what Emmert considers important.  That he continues to be propped up despite this doesn’t faze me anymore.

The only thing that still gets me is how anyone can seriously suggest that the solution to the problem rests in giving Mark Emmert more authority.

AJ Green should have self imposed a one game suspension.

If this were any other organization, outside of the federal government, the sheer ineptitude and lack of performance would have gotten Emmert fired years ago. The NCAA is inept because the universities allow it. It’s like letting the inmates hire the warden.

For those who think the NCAA needs a makeover, Emmert is the gift that keeps on giving. I can’t wait till one of our numbers oriented fans figures the dollar amount a bad targeting call costs….say Georgia. When you can attach money to a fuckup, you even get the attention of college presidents.

I’m telling you, losing the Vandy game because of the bad call on Wilson is going to cost UGA the East championship. That is a ticket to the SECCG. Value that.

Donna Schalala is huge in democratic power circles. The NCAA is made from the same mold. They protect their own.

Compare that to UGA who had a Bush appointee as it’s president and a bible toting head coach… they also punish their enemies.

Politics trumps everything in the new America… just ask John Corzine.

Sorry to be so negative on such a beautiful fall day… now about those trial lawyers and your quotes on targeting yesterday.

Simply put, she’s huge. It’s pretty easy for Donna to take over America. In fact, she’s so good that W. even gave her a Good Citizenship Award

What the Presidents don’t realize is that Emmert is making them look bad by association. He’s a hot mess but what are they for backing him.

Frankly we are not smart at UGA. We never defend our players. We are like the mom’s response after here little leage son’s team was beaten 40-0, “it will be okay honey”. Hell, we can not figure out how to get a ST coach. Our Board and AD just as soon not care about lost bowl revenue from a game like at Vandy. Plain stupid.

The NCAA is ruining the game both on the field (e.g., targeting rule) and off of it (see ridiculous NCAA rules / enforcement practices). I have always been a huge college football fan, but I must admit that all of this has slowly but surely chipped away at my emotional attachment to the sport. I could deal with the off the field stuff because the games were so compelling. But now that they are damaging the on-field product, it is starting to reach a tipping point for me. These guys better be careful because I doubt that I am alone in this sentiment.

How ’bout imposing a 20 scholarship reduction, mandatory zero-tolerance suspensions for any type of player citation, smoke, or empty beer can, and automatic dismissals of players with more than one failing grade?

No one could be that brutal. Wait…
