That’s a more egregious example of targeting than any of the plays I’ve seen Georgia defenders flagged for this season. Way more.

It’s worth noting that the flag party in the UGA/App. State game came from the same crew that let Nick Fairley get cheapshot after cheapshot in on Aaron Murray. The refs in this conference are a disgrace.

What about the no-call pass interference when LSU was throwing into the end zone? LSU receiver got snatched to the ground and official immediately ruled the pass was uncatchable. Of course it was.

THere is obviously a codicil to the rule that adds the player making the hit must be wearing a red helmet with a G on it.

This is college football’s new celebration penalty. The most charitable thing to say about the officiating this season is just that the refs don’t know what the hell to do with the rule.

Larry I got a really bad feeling about next week. I read a lot of us talking about Awbun got no defense…and we got round two of the “You Cain’t Go Home Again Bowl.”
Somebody here will try to make me believe Awbun’s offense is all smoke and mirrors. Me, I think this thing here next week will bear a stark resemblance to last year. But the vice will be versa.
Yeah, kinda felt bad for Zach, but it went away quick…gonna be some damn Arn Bowl, huh? Maybe.

I don’t know, Scorp. Let’s face the facts. There’s no way on God’s green earth that Richt and UGA sign a kid that was kicked out of another SEC school. Just no way. It is kind of frustrating to see LSU, Auburn and the like profit from our honorable discipline.

We signed both kids prior to their mistakes…so it appears both acts that got them kicked out were anomalies we did not see coming at all based on the research into their characters I hope to God we did before signing them.
That we would not sign them back after “rehab” is probably best for the kids.
I know we certainly have, in the past, re-signed kids we sent to one form of Siberia or another.
As far as LSU…not sure how much they have profited, Awbun remains to be seen, does it not?
What I am saying and I am dead cert about is that I believe it underclass behavior to call out kids for their mistakes.
Funny we did not seem to hear much about this with Zach…hmmm.

Had Nick gone to GMC for “moral rehab”, I’m sure we would have given him a second chance. He had a good JC experience and has now surfaced to present us a formidable opponent. What happened to the Vols? We squeaked by Tennessee and Auburn ran rampant over them. I have a very bad feeling about Saturday. Malzhan and his staff have done a fantastic job with his players…3-9 to9-1?? Man, that’s coaching! And, Noonan, most of that squad are not “felonious rejects” but young men we tried very hard to recruit. Let’s be honest with our comments. I hope our front seven play the hardest fought game they’ve ever played and take away the ground game…then we’ll have a prayer..if not, it’s gonna be a very long afternoon for the Dawgs! Go Dawgs, GATA!!!

“I have a very bad feeling about Saturday.” Yeah, me too and it has absolutely nothing to do with mistakes made as teenagers, although pre-whining about that do get the Bitches all hot and bothered.
Remember what we did to them last year, and it could have been much worse…most of the kids on that team are waiting for us under the dying oaks in Awbun.

The louder the noise about officiating this week, both here and everywhere else, the better. The SEC officials are fully corrupt enough to see that their incompetence is not distributed equally. Even before the stench of their work at Auburn 2010 (which hangs in the air to this day), there was their gift to Florida in 2009 against Arkansas of a 60-plus yard TD drive, constructed almost wholly from bogus penalties. I think we all know why that happened. And to this day I can – just barely – tolerate Verne & Gary for their ceaseless pimping 3 years ago of “this wonderful story” of AU’s “magical season”, founded on a purchased player and a thug who should have been ejected in the first half. Had to listen to it almost the whole game.
SEC refs must be rigid with greed and anticipation of what they can obtain by screwing us over to set up an Iron Bowl between an undefeated and a one-loss, the expected winner to go the the SECCG and beyond; and the loser places into the Sugar Bowl. All with the requisite extra ca$h from post-season officiating assignments, to say nothing of (ahem) ancillary earning$ from a few di$creetly placed bet$. So, the louder this is talked about in advance, the better chance of restraining them at least in part. So hopefully there is LOTS of talk this week about UGA at AU 2010 and UGA at Vanderbilt last month.

Targeting, plain and simple…but, at first glance, I was glad the guy wasn’t ejected.
It was a vicious game. Lots of licks passed back and forth. Makes you respect the guys that play this game we love.
In hind sight, I’m not sure what the refs were thinking. My guess is that they knew he should have been ejected, but it was a clean, hard hitting game and maybe they thought ejecting him would somehow alter the outcome.
Like I said above, I’m kinda glad he wasn’t ejected…but he should have been.

Well, now I’m worried about Auburn…
First half our DBs looked bad and we couldn’t get a pass rush. Second half, Saban said to heck with it, you DBs have to fend for yourselves. Turned out, that worked.

Not trying to make excuses for Refs, because that’s inexcusable… But I am wondering if they’re afraid to make the call targeting because they weren’t sure? Seems ludicrous to me, since he clearly deserved the late hit call. In this case call targeting.. He’ll still get the 15 yards at a minimum.
With a chance to discuss, how do they talk themselves out of targetting? Dumbassery.

The rule, as noted here several times, says when in doubt throw the flag.

When in doubt they always throw it on Georgia-and even when there is no doubt that it is NOT targeting they throw it.

That wasn’t the only one from that game.
On Blue’s drop of the interception in 2nd half, the Bama safety went helmet first into the helmet of the LSU receiver. He even came up with his hands on his head knowing he did it. Didn’t even draw a flag, much less targeting. Then again, no flags against Bama is the SEC standard.

Was the Bama player down? It looked like he was on the LSU player, not the ground. Not excusing the nature of the hit, but how was it late if the runner isn’t down?
Rule is totally arbitrary at this point. Might as well flip a coin.

I was wondering if I was the only person to think that! He wasn’t down but using the body of the LSU tackler to stay off the ground. Yes, it smacks of “defenseless player” but what if the receiver spins and resumes his travels to the end zone? Number 6 seemed relieved that Norwood wasn’t hurt and seemed truly apologetic to McCarron. I doubt many of the players on either team really thought “targeting!!” I know there is increased interest in safety but the late hit call was sufficient. Just l.ike the Ga/Fla offsetting fiascoes..sometimes the refs just have to suck it up and compromise! Having been on both sides of this argument, all I can say is “taint easy Jethro!”

That play is the “poster boy” example of why there should be a rule against cheap shots that are clearly wicked, late hits against defenseless players. I don’t know of a CFB fan who would object to someone being ejected for that play. On the other hand, I have 3 clear examples, two from the Vandy game, and one from the Appy game where officials should stay back and leave the game alone. Strong, legal hits during the course of a play are not even in the same universe with that cheap shot. Every hard hit should not be cause for an official to reach for his flag on instinct. They simply need to apply some visuals to draw clear lines for officials and change the instruction to call ONLY when you are sure, not throw a flag just because you think some PETA-type wouldn’t like the violence of the play (and of course take the penalty off if review shows it to be a bad call.)

Could not agree more, I don’t recall ANY conferences before targeting was called against UGA. THIS needs to be protested by someone very high up, because this is PURE BS at the highest level.

+1. Absolutely right. The truth is SEC officials have been calling this same BS on Georgia for clean hard hits for years (“unnecessary roughness”) even before the targeting rule was implemented by the NCAA. The difference is now they can get the player ejected on the spot.

Have you noticed that most if not all of the targeting ejections are being called in the first half. I think the refs are hesitant to call them in the second half for fear that the schools will go to war with the league over a player missing parts of two games. Last night I think we saw the “unwritten” rule. Clearly, the LSU player hit the Bama player helmet to helmet, clearly the WR was defenseless since he was in the grasp and in fact tackled by another player when the hit took place. If I’m Steve Shaw I have to punish this crew and make it public otherwise he has surrender the high ground. It is one thing to miss a call, it is altogether different to ignore the rules.

I thought their rule of thumb was, “when in doubt, throw the flag,” NOT “when in doubt, confer about it.” That’s what the replay review is for. It seems this crew wanted it both ways. And UGA got hosed again yesterday on a bogus targeting call. NO CONFERENCE.

Amazing how teams that develop a relationship for “tough but disciplined” get the benefit of the doubt on so many calls. I would guess the CBB analog would be Duke. Refs just see the game differently when those uniforms are on the floor. Contrast that with Georgia. During the SECCG game last year, Danielson mentioned that Richt was “ok” with his team being among the league’s most penalized. This isn’t a knock on Richt or even the officials, but maybe McGarity should pop some $$$ for a nice season-long video comparison that he could send to the league office, with the ending graphic being this:

Put ANY of our targeting penalties (which included TWO ejections upheld) up against the LSU hit (which was not even called targeting) and no words need to be said. CLEAR bias against UGA.Enough is Enough.
