Observations from the 45, Georgia-Appalachian State edition

It was a 39-point win against a poor 1-AA opponent, so I see no need to get too deep into the woods here.  A few bullet points will have to suffice.

  • Any discussion of this game has to start with Aaron Murray claiming the career SEC passing TD record away from Danny Wuerffel.  I know he’s got to be disappointed that his last season failed to live up to the promise it had before all the skill players started dropping like flies, but as far as I’m concerned, knocking two Gator greats off the all-time list, as well as going 3-1 against Florida, puts him in the pantheon of Dawg greats.  He’s the Theron Sapp of our time.
  • I enjoyed Hudson Mason’s enjoyment.  His enthusiasm was obvious. (I kidded to a friend that Bobo should have pulled a joke by sending out another quarterback after Mason’s first TD pass.)  It’s clear he’s listening to his coaches.  His mechanics have improved, most noticeably in his cleaner and quicker release.  He went through his progressions nicely, albeit against a defense that won’t be confused with a SEC one.  He throws a catchable ball.  He’s not as mobile as Murray and he doesn’t have Murray’s arm strength.  It’ll be interesting to see what he can do next season with all the weapons he’ll have at his disposal.
  • If you didn’t appreciate how deep Georgia’s receiving corps was at the start of the season, Rantavious Wooten explained things nicely to you. The TD catch where he schooled the DB on a ball that hung up a little bit was particularly brilliant.
  • I guess they’ll be working on pop-up kickoffs this week.
  • Chris Mayes, I really would have liked to have seen a fat guy touchdown just once this season.  You had your chance, man.
  • It’s a shame Rumph’s season has been so delayed by the hamstring injury.  He’s not a blazer, but he’s got deceptive speed, good hands and above-average body control.  Add in his height and he still could be a factor over the next few games.
  • Great to see Tray Matthews back.  He may have been rusty, but his play wasn’t tentative.
  • Grantham detractors, has it occurred to you that you may have been trolled by the man?  ASU doesn’t run the ball well, but has the most efficient passer in the Southern Conference and a couple of senior receivers who can play a little.  They were going to throw the ball, yet Grantham came out playing soft zone and stuck with it.  Of course the Mountaineers were going to get yards.  But they still wound up with season lows in points and total yardage and their offense was essentially non-existent after the third drive.
  • That being said, is there a more money call against Georgia’s defense than going four-wide and throwing to the receiver being covered by whichever Dawg ILB drew the short straw?

A while back Bluto wrote he was almost sad for Murray…I am not even ALMOST sad for what remains of what might very well have been the best offensive team Georgia has had since……hell, Buck and Herschel et freres?

It is truly had for me to comprehend that the team that damn near beat Missouri, did beat LSU and South Carolina, is the team that lost to Vandy.

And, of course, we are not alone in this tumble…don’t get me wrong, any time you beat Florida it is sweeeeet, but the Gators are a sad version of the mighty Gators that began playing football in 2000.

I firmly believe Mark Richt has become a great football coach and most of his staff complement his skills as a leader of mostly men. But Mark Richt is not a lucky coach…oh he has had years where the Kharmic Bitches were busy with other folks, but the Bitches seem to have run out of fan families to torture and have finally turned their hellish eyes on us.

Next year in Jerusalem boys and girls, next year in Jerusalem.

Mark Richt is not a GREAT coach until he wins the Whole Enchilada, ie: National Title. Now, I know, everyone has their own definition of adequately successful UGa seasons but for “great” you gotta do the ultimate at least once. Win the Crystal Ball, CMR!

This is such bullshit. There have been many great coaches and players who have never won a MNC. Please tell me how UGA’s ’02 13-1 season is any different from Coarch’s 13-1 or Bama’s 13-1 season, other than sheer dumb luck? In ’02 if the Schmuckeyes lose one of the many games they survived by the skin of their teeth or in ’07 if we weren’t the object of Herbstriets personal rant we are having a totally different conversation. In 13 years he has 2 SEC titles, 5 appearances in the SECCG and a winning record against all of our rivals except FL (and he is 5-5 over the last 10 including 3 in a row).

To be totally accurate RD, CMR is 4-4 vs. LSU so technically he doesn’t have a winning record against the Bengals, but that total includes the ’09 game stolen by the cheatin’ SEC refs so…..he’s really 5-3 against them in my book.

He can be a Great Coach when he gets all the marbles (and not saying I would trade the guy) — it’s really just south semantics anyway.

I am tired of this argument. See Rocket Dawg’s reply for my own thoughts as well.

Agree DF Will, this is pretty much the position of the Sports Center crowd, under 35 years old. We might have won one, or two, of those under CMR if there had really been a way to determine who should play for one of those crystal balls. But what we have is this political beauty contest where we pretend we can narrow 120 teams, with dozens of layers of conflicting data points into one football game of two contestants and have a representative National Champ. I get that is all cool and fun, but it isn’t the best way to crown a champion, and it certainly isn’t the measure of a coach, or a man. You do realize guys like Chizik, Coker, Holtz, etc., have won one of those, right? Which one of those do you want exactly?

Love the blog. You’ll be writing about him quite a bit in the future, so I just want to make sure we are all on board – it’s Hutson, not Hudson.

The Battle Cry of the Bulldawg Nation “Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda”. Coach Richt is looking very tired and in pain, this team and year is wearing him out. I do not look forward to the day he hangs it up. I don’t want to wander in the wilderness again.

Gurley seems to be babying the ankles up the middle, he’s definitely tentative.

Reminds me of Joe Posnanski’s epic “Herschel Redux” and his observation that Herschel never ran the same after dislocating his shoulder against Notre Dame. He never led with the shoulder again, ran more upright, was a completely different back his sophomore year.

With all the talk about pay for play, why are insurance policies for these guys only optional? A minimal amount should be required with every scholarship. A 5 or 10M policy might put some spring in his step.

Except for the 17-9 win over the offensively inept UF last year, UGA has played 10 teams ranked in the AP top 20 the past 3 seasons. Every single one of these teams has scored over 30 points. The average is 37.2 points that our defense has surrendered against these ranked teams. Even in the 2011 season, for which Grantham was heralded, all four ranked teams we faced torched us for a 39 point averages.

Good points, but he also kept his starters in til the last drop in last year’s Barner game to clinch the goose egg, so that gives him some latitude far as I’m concerned! I can’t stand them guys. If his D gives it up big time this Saturday, tho, I may join you in the gallery.

Didn’t know who it was but I too was calling for the fat guy touchdown before he dropped it.
