About defending that Auburn running game…

Groo is spot on about the most important position on Georgia’s defense today.  The outside linebackers have to set and hold the edge.  (Harvey-Clemons, too.)  And they have to do it consistently.  Taking a play off here and there will kill them.  On the other hand, even the most angry critics of Grantham’s defense would have to admit Georgia’s chance of success in slowing Auburn’s offense rises if Georgia can force Auburn’s running game into the middle.

Keep an eye on Jenkins and Floyd.  I guarantee you Marshall will.

Those two containing the edge and our ILBs defending crossing routes have been our two most glaring weaknesses on defense. Not excited about this game.

If smallpox ever makes a comeback I hope it happens in Auburn.

Fun stat reported this morning by ESPN. Auburn has not lost a game when scoring 30 or more points since…our epic 56 – 49 OT victory in 1996. I hate to think that our key to today’s game is in breaking that streak again.

I think Jenkins can hold the edge. But Floyd has shown zero discipline in playing run contain this year. He dives into the middle to stop inside runs and he runs around trap blocks to give up the off-tackle hole. I’m sure Grantham is teaching him better. Here’s hoping he chooses today to listen.

He is the one I worry about the most too when it comes to stopping the run (secondary is always my biggest concern). Love his enthusiasm but zero discipline is right, someone has to drill his primary responsibility into him before he runs wild in pursuit. Misdirection plays and reverses get him every single time. If he would just pursue 3-4 yards deep it would be OK but he goes right along the line of scrimmage like a dog following a scent. At this stage of the season the light should have come on by now, and it had better in this game. In this game specifically, I would rather have someone with less talent playing assignment football than him continuing to get beat outside.

It sounds kinda like playing Tech. Play your assignment and don’t get fooled.

ahhhh HB, in theory that would be correct. Unfortunately, Awbun has a good bit more athletic ability than doth Professor Johnson. Other than that, yep, don’t get fooled is the watchword.

Seems to me the question here really is, are we, Georgia, better than TAMU?

I’d blame it on Scorp’s Kharmic bitches, but I prefer to blame a lack of fundamentals and awareness on the secondary. They don’t do anything else well, so what else can you expect.

    I’m so fucking disgusted.
