Short, but sweet.

Richt gets the rivalry, and for that I love him. Crazy year. We win Saturday and we’ll have a season in which we beat USCjr, LSU, UT, Florida and Tech and it will feel like a screw-up season. Just crazy. It’s a funny game.

I’m scared about our defense without being able to count on Murray bailing them out, but I love that Richt is going full pads all week. Also, I remember in 2009, after we lost to them in 2008, Richt dedicated a portion of practice each week, regardless of who we were playing, to practicing against the nerdbone. I’m not sure if we’re still doing that or not, but that was ballsy and showed how much he gets that beating Tech is a big deal.

Conversely, if I were a tech fan, I’d be worried sick. If they can’t win THIS year, with a backup QB, all the injuries, an inconsistent OL and D, then when? Never, I hope.

    • I think that “if they can’t win THIS year” metric belongs to 2009.

The Caleb King TD run sucked the wind right out of the little twerps just as they thought they were coming back.

My sincere hope is that we surpass Notre Dame’s streak vs. Navy in this rivalry. But also, win this one, and we’re more than halfway to finally taking over “all time longest win streak in the series” (we’ve done 7 a ton of times, but the NATS hold the record with 8, set back in the ages of silent movies and horse-drawn carriages.)

I, for one, am ready to move the nerd game to earlier in the year and/or make it every few years instead of our finale every year. They honestly do not deserve that distinction.

    • Not this again.

Tech gets pounded at a rate that makes what happened to Georgia against Florida for twenty-plus years look like a dynasty by comparison and you want to kill it? Hell, I wish the Dawgs could play Tech twice a season.

If we could clear some cupcakes off the schedule I wouldn’t mind keeping it, but they’re just so annoying and I’d rather be playing ANY other SEC team, or FSU, or Clemson, etc this week. I agree with those who say it only has a downside at this point.

At the same time, I get the tradition, losing this game would be soul-crushing to a lot of people on both sides of the stadium. In fact, I’d say the UGA game is a lot of what gives Tech football any identity at all.

I’d say my daddy and grandaddy both went there, and you are a Tech fan. If I’m wrong, why all the obsession on the Tech boards over what happens at Georgia – all year long? I may note if Tech wins or loses during the season, but I’m not cheering their injuries. And if Tech football has an identity, why can’t you sell any tickets to your games? Is Atlanta not a big enough town? Aren’t there any Tech grads in the southeast? I’ll tell you why – because nobody cares what happens with Tech football, including Tech grads.

FSU plays Florida as their season ender, and Clemson plays So Car. Ain’t no way they’re gonna give up their own in state hate bowls just so we can play their nemeses. Just because we’re fared better against our in state ACC rival than the Gators and Cocks is no reason to give up our hate bowl.

So I reckon I’m curious (really, no snark intended): do you not get a grim satisfaction out of keeping these bums in their place? And do the classic games in this series (and we’ve had them) just not matter that much? Are you just bored with the series because of our recent success? Do you think we’re giving them more publicity than they’d otherwise get?

Personally, I can’t think of any team I’d rather play every year (that we don’t already play), in conference or out, than the NATS (tho Clemson, I grant you, is close). It’s a unique, storied series (108th game coming up). It’s had it’s share of classic, nail biting games and heartbreakers. They’re our geographically closest major college competitor. The game impacts recruiting, in state bragging rights and Thanksgiving conversation. And, as the Sen suggests, it’s fun to beat them–no way to do that too often or too badly. For what other team would it be worth ending this series?

“Are you just bored with the series because of our recent success?”

I think this may be part of it, may have something to do with watching that rugby-style offense, too? I don’t know…I can’t even muster up an active hate for them anymore. It’s like turnip greens – I don’t want to see them eradicated and their fans in shambles, I just don’t want them on my plate anymore.

As I said, I’m not for ending the series because it means so much to so many people (Tech fans included) – I just don’t get as pumped up about it.

Other teams…I would prefer to be playing any other SEC team this weekend…or any other perennial top-fifty team. I just used Clemson and FSU as examples…

It’s the time of year we traditionally have the fewest players suspended, right before finals.

Keep the game where it is.

Since I see you are already getting dissed for this, I appreciate your posting this and, thanks for getting it. Every four years, in Athens only, just like the state’s other mid-major. Actually, Georgia State is now eligible for the rotation. Add Mercer when they get up and running and we could have one different in-state team every year to help the less fortunate. If GT doesn’t like it, let them become even more irrelevant by refusing while whining on the ghetto curb. They all need the financial support but we need to keep the game at home while spreading some cash to the little brothers.

I know, but why not wish for what you would like to see. Then, if they refused to accept that offer, they can sit around and cry and whine about what they once had, before Uncle Bobby Dodd screwed the pooch and made them irrelevant….to the point major programs didn’t find them worth playing any longer (unless mandated for conference games). Their little match box stadium would only get filled when FSU or Clemson played them, and they longed for the day UGA once considered them a rival (although not equal.)

Does everyone realize that Tech hasn’t beaten us in Atlanta without help from the officials since 1989?
’91 – Zeier and Hearst get it done
’93 – The fight on Thanksgiving Day after Zeier throws his umpteeth TD pass late in the 4th
’95 – Kanon Parkman FG at the end (?)
’97 – They tore out our hearts but we stuck it back in! Maybe Bobo’s finest hour
    ’01 – Richt smackdown I
    ’03 – Richt smackdown II
’05 – Shockley to McLendon late and then Tim Jennings with the late pick
’07 – Thomas Brown chews up the Tech defense and the Redcoats play Crank ‘Dat after the game
’09 – We run this state!
    ’11 – Richt smackdown III
If this isn’t robbing someone’s manhood, then I don’t know what is.

I’m curious as to your definition of manhood. I can assure you; mocking someone elses lack of manhood (perceived or otherwise) has no place in true manhood. Deduce from that what you will.

both have 7-4 (5-3 conference) records and aren’t exactly playing great football right now.

with murray out and uga’s defense reeling, georgia tech certainly has a shot.

sagarin has the two teams ranked within 8 spots of each other so it wouldn’t be a huge upset.

yeah, North Dakota State at 22 jumps out at you. but the good news is that sagarin only has 2 FBS teams ranked in front of florida, so GO GATA. no bowl for them this year but if they drop down a level they could do well in the playoffs.

Sagarin’s been doing this for 20 plus years and had to tweak his formula mid-way through the season because he had multiple FCS teams in the top 25. Don’t know him personally but he’s probably one of those people that’s so smart he’s driven himself insane.

I’m not sure how it’s possible to have 20 years experience with computer rankings and not recognize that you’ve created a formula that will award clearly inferior teams halfway through the season.
