You can find the list here. A few observations about it:
- Nicest thing: Aaron Murray being named second-team. I figured he was a long shot with all the McCarron love, but AP, you done alright here.
- Second nicest thing: Marshall Morgan makes the first team. Not to say he didn’t deserve it, but it wouldn’t have surprised me if he hadn’t.
- Try again: I know he was hurt, but I’d vote Gurley ahead of Hill. You don’t see defenses adjust their game plans for Hill the way they do for Gurley.
- Little surprise: Ramik Wilson is the only Georgia defensive player named. I thought Garrison Smith might get a nod, but no go.
- One that got away: Laremy Tunsil gets named to the second team. Damn. It’s not as if he wasn’t needed in Athens or anything…
- Head scratcher: Arkansas’ Alex Collins is named freshman of the year, but isn’t named to either the first or second teams. (I would have picked Hargreaves for that honor.)

When you run for 304 yards against the East champ it kinda gets folks attention.
Gurley not being 100 percent for at least a third of the season proly means something, too.

Yeah. If we did have a game where we gave Gurley 40 carries, he’d threaten 300 yds too, but I don’t think it’s likely. How many carries did Verron have vs Ole Miss or Tech? I think that was the last (only) time under Richt we had a back carry it well over 30 times.

How about if the O-Line played consistently good all year, that would have helped.

Not better, maybe not as good. There is a quickness factor for Mason, he lacks Gurley’s sheer force, but man is he ever quick to the hole.
And Cousin Eddie is absolutely right about the o line. The Auburn O line is magnificent…or has been so far. Even Saban raved about them (after the Miracle of the Dead Trees.
If Gurley was in the Auburn offense, they would run slightly different plays, playing to Gurley’s talents.

Mason’s not even in Gurley’s stratosphere. Mason had 6.61 yds/carry Saturday night in his breakout performance. He’s at 5.7 for his career. Gurley is at 6.25 for his career. When he went out vs. LSU, Gurley was at 6.34 yds/carry for the 2013 season. Think about that. That 6.34 yds/carry was against defenses that finished in rushing defense at:
Clemson (49)
South Carolina (32)
North Texas (18)
LSU (43)
Mizzou finished at 47. And Gurley plays in an offense and with a QB that actually throw the ball. And to boot, Gurley finished the season going 20 for 122 vs. the #9 ranked Rushing Defense on the Flats for 6.1 yds/carry.
Against their one common opponent (LSU), Gurley played for just shy of 2 qtrs and had 9.1 yds/carry. Mason had 5.1 yds/carry. Don’t get me wrong. Mason is a fine back and deserves the honor. He stayed healthy and Todd had bad luck this year. However, if we gave Todd the kind of space Mason has, he’d rush for 2,000 yards by Senior night each year, if not sooner.

If I didn’t know which squad was which, I would have had a hard time figuring out which was 1st team or 2nd team. That’s some crazy depth, right there and healthy, 2 might be better than 1.

I was surprised to not see Amarlo Herrera on the list anywhere.
And Laremy Tunsil going to Ole Miss really sucks. Next year’s #1 OT is in Gwinnett County and he’s a strong Clemson lean. We really struggle on the oline recruiting front. Who was our last 1st rounder on the line?

Oline is a weak spot…and probably my biggest gripe with the Richt recruiting effort.
Ja’Won James was a North Gwinnett kid, too….sitting there staring us in the face on the 2nd team. [just saw the comment below…I was going to mention Richardson, too.]
The lack of ‘5 stars’ is one thing…I think Theus is the only consensus 5 star we’ve signed under Richt. And a bigger issue might be that out of the 15 or so 4 star players signed…not one of them has developed into a first round draft pick. Cordy Glenn is really the only guy in the Richt era that’s gotten more than a first round sniff (Jean Giles had some hype for a first day guy…but ended up going in the 4th?)

I think the Brent Benedict kid was a five star before he completely tore up his knee late in HS. Bad luck, injuries, and some poor evaluation of talent have really done us in on the line over the years.

My thoughts:
1. Clowney was not first-team anything this year.
2. Drew and Smith were both worthy of honorable mention at minimum.
3. With the way things are leaning, I do not expect to see us place many receivers on the lists. We’ll continue to have an excellent corps, however.
4. I continue to not understand why the teams are picked the way they are. Don’t misunderstand, I don’t think they should adhere to 4-3/3-4 on defense (e.g.), and picking more than 11 makes a lot of sense. But why does the 2nd team defense have so many more players than the first? That’s just weird.
5. You mention Tunsil, a recruiting loss which inarguably hurt. But two other guys made 2nd team of note. Juwan James was a one-time Georgia target (and iirc a lean at one point). And were thought we were leading for Richardson late in the process only for him to choose the Vols on signing day.

I would take the skill positions of the 2nd Team Offense all day long. That is one scary back field! Yeldon and Gurley are both better than Hill in my opinon and if you take Tra Mason out of that system he doesn’t put up the same numbers. He is talented and deserves to be All SEC but Yeldon and Gurley are better pure RB’s in my opinion.

Mason certainly had a better year, and that’s what the award is for. However, in light of that, it’s a shame that Clowney made the list over someone like Ray Drew. Just doesn’t make the same sense.

Lots of talent out there. Glad to see Murray get recognized. Comparing the two teams, I’m not sure I wouldn’t take the second team over the first team in a head to head matchup.
