Absolutely they would… You know my thinking has always been (and still is to some degree) that Saban will not leave Bama – not because of money, but because Bama has given him the keys to the car, the house, the state. Heck I think the Governor may report to Nick. I do not see any other school giving him that kind of control. That is why I see him staying at Bama.

Pretty sure Little Nicky doesn’t leave just because of money. He will get close to anything Texas offers to stay at Alabama. He may want to get away from the crazies, or he may just want to go where no many has ever gone before by winning big at three different schools. The latter would be easier at Texas than it was at Bama given the talent pool and where the program is.

Agree Senator, my comment was to the general discussion of whether Nicky leaves, or not, and why; not a response to the Sexton extortion game. Odds are probably less than 50/50 that he will leave for Texas but if he does, this will be the gig, and this will be the time, imo.

If Texas wants Saban, Saban will go assuming that the dollars are right. He’s lost the “three NCs in a row” thing he had going on at Bama. The next challenge, as correctly pointed out by Mac above, is the ” NCs at three different schools” thing. That is a very viable prospect if he takes the Texas job. Little Nicky is more about historical conquests now rather than just dinero. He can get the same dinero at either Bama or Texas. I predict that he’s gone west before the end of the month.

Ask yourself this question: You can have Gus Malzahn or Nick Saban as your HC–which one would you chose? I would venture to say that almost 100% of the ADs on the US would chose Saban. Who would you chose?

Alabama is in a “football conference”. Alabama and SEC have a history. Plus a string of titles. Money is important, but achievements in life can not be bought or sold. Like Saban, think he is a very good coach and a credit to “the conference”. Seems like it would be difficult to leave a place like Alabana.

Gee… Will. Alabama is such a homely state. Compared to Georgia anyway. Last time I was through Alabama was on the way to Mobile to catch a cruise ship for a family reunion. Spending 5 days on a ship just ain’t for me. Besides the annoyance of having to participate in all kinds of contests and games, I always get seasick.

Spurrier told me some stories about that interfering nerd, couldn’t blame him for leaving there. Saban could never work without having the reins anywhere, so that let’s Dallas, Washington, and Atlanta out…among others where the owners meddle into something they aren’t experts at.

I think there are three options. 1)stay at Bama for more money 2)go to Texas for more money or 3)go to NFL.
I have no clue which one he will choose.
On one hand, the circumstances are more “right” for him to leave Bama than in the recent past. He is has more or less done all he can do there. At this point, every season is “title or bust.” Thus, there is nowhere “up” from here. Of course, one could argue it is foolish of me to assume that he has done “all he can do at Bama.” Quite frankly, he can always win more titles and were he to win a couple more titles in the next 3-4 years, he would be “alone at the top” in terms of winning big in a competitive era.
Texas is obviously a different challenge for which he could be paid well. Additionally, he can relocate to a place that has way more culture and sophistication than Tuscaloosa. I have no idea how much that matters to he and his wife, but I would be shocked if Tuscaloosa is their “dream home.”
then again, he can retire anywhere he wants once he is through coaching so I am not sure how much coaching 5-10 years in Austin matters to him.
As for the NFL, I have no idea if that is an “itch” he feels the need to scratch again. if it is, Texas does not solve that problem for him and moving to Texas would be an interim step that would make no sense.
Bottom line – he will get a raise. I hope he leaves Bama for the simple reason that it creates risk for their program and opportunity for ours both short and long term. I would be shocked if they did not offer Kirby Smart the job, which he would take. If he succeeds, he is an even more attractive candidate for us when Richt retires. If he fails, Bama will fall.
The only real scenario that it is a bad move for us is if he was likely to grow complacent the next 5 years at Bama.

More money. Austin is a much nicer atmosphere than Tuscaloosa. Less pressure from fans expecting to win a title EVERY year. More resources. Easier conference schedule. More fertile recruiting grounds. A track record of restlessness.

+1. Agreed. The primary beneficiary of Saban’s departure IMHO is the SEC East champion. The team, at this time, most likely to be favored to win the SEC East in the foreseeable future is Georgia (I believe Mizzou this year was an anomoly, it’s going to take years for FU and UT to rebuild and USCe…well…never wins the SEC East, does it?). It will also help Auburn, because of the in-state rivalry thing, but not as much as it would help UGA.

Something else that is a bit off topic but deserves mention: Conference expansion is at a hiatus point but is not really over IMHO. One of the expansion alternatives discussed in the past has been Oklahoma and Oklahoma State joining the SEC. If that were to happen they would have to go into the West geographically. That means that there would be 9 West teams and only 7 East teams. We would have to have realignment in the divisions. Look at a map. The logical thing to do is to move Mizzou into the West and then move Bama and Auburn into the East. That also reasonably balances out the 2 divisions strength-wise. If Saban is gone, I think UGA becomes the lead dog (pun intended) in the SEC East and the likely winner in future SECCGs against probably Okie, Okie State, aTm or LSU. I, for one, am all for this. I think Georgia comes out of it with a competitive advantage, as long as the idiots at B-M don’t screw it up.
