This is going to sound like trolling, but it is a serious question. I’m not a big fan of the NFL, so I may have missed something, but why does Gruden’s name come up every time there’s an opening? As a casual observer of his work as a head coach, I guess I don’t see what others see.

That’s it, and his age. It’s not like the man has coached in college and acts like he’d want to deal with those headaches (read Chip Kelly’s recent comments about no longer having to recruit) on a daily basis. The idea Gruden would take a college job is laughable/delusional.

I’m not a big fan of NFL coaches in college as their systems seem to be too complex (*cough* Todd Grantham *cough*). But I think part of the Gruden appeal is that people think he would be fantastic in the living room telling mama he’ll get her son to the league.

I’d be skeptical of Gruden’s success for the same reason you mention about Grantham. To my recollection, Gruden was a West Coast Offense guy in the pros. I cannot think of any school whose coach ran a WCO that had any sustained success over the last 10-15 years. You might get a year or two, but it seems to complex for it to be effective year in and year our. Which isn’t to say he would not change for college, but that would certainly make me think twice about hiring him.

Isn’t in crazy to think about ‘what if’ Boom hadn’t left? Strong could possibly be at Florida with Boom taking over at Texas…instead they are both probably (?) going to be going through a hiring search this year and next.

It has to be TX. TX has an embarassment of college prospects, and TX is head and shoulders above as ‘the team’ in the state. Depending on the year, FSU or Miami can be so much more of “the team” in Florida than UF.
There was an article linked here talking about the recruits a few weeks ago, and it was something like 375 kids each year sign a D-1 scholarship. Mack had just whiffed on the big TX recruits (RG3, Luck, JF) for too long

It’s worse than that: Drew Brees, Ryan Tannehill, Andrew Luck, RJ3, Christian Ponder and Andy Dalton are all Texas HS grads.
None played at Texas.

Colt McCoy was a terrific QB for texas. Couldn’t believe his completion percentage of something like 85% one of those years.
But Mack either misjudged some of the talent available to him, couldn’t land some top recruits, or squandered the talent he had – a situation we’re vaguely familiar with. One mnc wasn’t enough to save his butt once a&m started to get headlines. Same thing would happen here in GA if gtu were to start winning some bigger games, getting more $ headed their way, and hogging headlines.

Muschamp left for UF because it’s a really good job and it was open. Texas is a better job, it’s just it was filled. It was a no-brainer decision to go to G’ville.
Personally, I think it was a great move and that Will should be given Alumnus of the Year for his work down there.

What we should do is promote an unqualified assistant and then fire him when he gets frisky with the office staff, then hire an outsider from a mid-major power in Texas and then be such lunatic fans that he leaves after two years for a lesser job and then we hire a west coast hot shot but fire him before his first season when he takes the Butts-Mehre charge card on a spending spree at the Pink Pony then we hire a former QB and loyal son since he won’t say no and after a few years of middling success we fire him and then try to hire a hot shot glitzy name and fail and then luck into hiring an NFL coach that is desperate to get out of the league and back into college.

At this point, Richt will become Georgia’s version of Bobby Bowden in terms of length of tenure and fan endearment. As Dawgs fans, expectations should be held to a mere minimum. 8 to 10 wins a season, a solid New Year’s Day bowl and little else. Yes, there will be the occasional SEC East championship with nothing tangible to show for it. Georgia will continue to bring in scores of talent, yet it will sadly be wasted just as it has since 2006. We will continue to a ask why this program can not produce a complete team year in and year out. I do get excited thinking about what phase of the game will regress from one season to the next. The possibility of making the new 4 team playoff only depresses me. If I am not mistaken, only once in Richt’s tenure have the Dawgs been in positing to make the playoffs (2002…Man that was a long time ago). So, we sit and hope for that one magical season. GATA

We can only hope…Bowden didn’t win his first national championship until his 18th season with the Noles…between seasons 14 at FSU and 26, he finished in the top 10 every year and won two national championships.

He will remain until he decides otherwise, or until the money ceases to flow into B-M. Until then, what we have is what we will continue to get. Here’s to lowering expectations! That has to be good for a program. Also, according the the BCS numbers (which is all that we have to go on), 2002 is the ONLY year we would have made the playoffs. Once every 13 years? Why not? That’s better than once every-33-and -counting years.

One other point…they would have made the playoff in 2007. The b.s. vote manipulation that happened after the last weekend of the year wouldn’t have been necessary with a four game playoff. (UGA was sitting at #4 in the nation even receiving a first place vote prior to the ‘don’t let UGA into the championship game campaign). They would have been in the discussion last year, too. Everyone assumes a selection committee would take Florida because they were #4 in the BCS polls…I’m not so sure Georgia would get penalized for playing an extra game and losing by 4 against Bama by a committee like they did with pollsters. Bama and ND were locks. Ohio State wasn’t eligible. I think it would have come down to UGA, Florida, Stanford, Oregon, and maybe KSU.

The University of Georgia will hire from within in order to maintain the “Georgia Way”. Butts Mere is so full of UGA ex-coaches they had to expand it. Dooley created the positions and nobody has cleaned house yet. Dooley was hired by Joel Eves because he was an Auburn man and so was Dooley. Ray was hired because Erk and everyone else turned us down and it was getting embarrassing. Jim Donnan was well not the first choice Coach Mason reconsidered. Mark was a good hire but I really think Dooley was just looking for a cheap hire and Mark was the best available but even his defacto father Bobby wasn’t sure Mark could cut it. When it comes time for us to search it will not be that easy. UGA fans and Alumni have a bad reputation, something about being a bunch of whiny bitches.

It really does seem that being a “top-tier program” with a coaching position open means you have the opportunity to help a lot of people make a lot of money to stay where they are. The Texas opening has created a veritable gold rush. Which reminds me: If Mark Richt was the unscrupulous looking-after-number-one type a lot of fans seem to want, he’d have gotten himself “mentioned” in Austin and cashed in like everybody else.
