New, improved commenting (maybe)

In response to some reader requests, I’ve dug around at WordPress and activated something new for commenting.  It’s called Markdown and you can read about how to use it here.  The short version is that it should enable you to italicize, bold, quote, etc. in comments fairly easily (at least that’s what I’m hoping).

Play around with it and let me know if it’s worth leaving it in place for you guys.

  1. Markdown is terrific. I’ve been a huge fan ever since Stackoverflow.com started promoting it.

Any chance of being able to edit? Even for just a minute or so, like SB Nation?

Every so often I wish I could get something back. 🙂

How about thumbs up and thumbs down buttons for comments?

While we are at it, thanks for this site. Unlike some other Dawg sites, most of the people here are rational and have the University’s overall best interest at heart and don’t worship the Satanic midget at the Gumpversity to our west. There is quite a sufficient amount of negativity out there, I succumb myself at times, but it does little good to keep bad mouthing about things we cannot change ourselves. On one site, someone actually complained about our having a 100% graduation rate. He posted that he wished it was lower like Alabama’s and that would help us get a couple more wins. I would still love UGA even if football didn’t exist and the education I received and the friends made there have been a huge contributor to any success that I have had. Keep up the good fight Senator.

I agree with Lorenzo … you run a top notch blog and I am thankful for it and the other readers’ insight. Without it, I imagine I’d go crazy down here in this sleepy, little South GA town.

Seems to me that some folks who don’t like other folks’ opinions want them buried because the opinion so stated may not be to their liking. As long as the comment is within the bounds of decency and pertinent to the discussion, why should that be? If you don’t like the comment, don’t read it and pass on. If your that busy, maybe you should be working and not reading this website.

This is not really the issue. There are some blogs that get 100+ comments and can be a real pain in the ass to navigate, particularly if you are reading this site on a phone or tablet.

Count me as a fan, Senator. I’d like to be able to italicize something rather that type it in all CAPS.

This is just fine .. thanks.

FWIW, I’ve never seen ratings work, for all sorts of reasons. It tends to alter the discourse and never for the better, usually undermining the content, among other things.
