    Right. And when fans complain about ticket prices, increased incidence of “gouging,” etc., I simply remind them that they are to blame, not the AD or anyone else. After all, we’re the ones who have driven this thing to a fever pitch, so we’re reaping what we sew.

    Pretty sad really. However at some of the top schools, the money is coming from the athletic department which is largely funded by ticket and such, right?

    At least we occasionally get a quality product out of those coaches. Much less so from the politicians and university academics. BTW, tenured professors at public universities are doing just fine. I’ll bet a lot of coaches wish they had tenure (CPJ).

      Tenured professors whine about the lack of pay raises as often as Al Sharpton yells “racism”.

      Gotta love a career that is secured for life after the first five years of work.

    In the very big picture, and accounting for TV money, this chart is the result of choices by the people of the sovereign states. I can’t decide for myself whether it’s reassuring that there’s enough stability in this country to make coaches the highest paid public employees, or whether it’s a sign that we’re distracting our attention from the decline of our civilization.

    my response to all this is, So?

    It’s the same issue now as it was back when Babe Ruth signed a contract that paid him more than the President of the United States. Asked how he felt about that, Ruth is said to have responded, “I had a better year than he did.”

      Aren’t salaries in a market economy determined by the amount of money you can generate?

      Many of these athletic departments profit tens of millions per year – how much would they profit if they refused to pay coaches more than 300k a year or so?

      Further, it’s difficult to label all of these as true public employees as their salaries come from money generated by the athletic departments and not tax revenue in the vast majority of cases.

    Two points: (1) Maybe university presidents and deans should hire Jimmy Sexton. (2) Has anyone compared the amount of hours actually worked by a head football coach to the typical public employee?
