You can stop waiting for the other shoe to drop.

It’s done.

This, too.

Brevity is the soul of wit.

We are too, coach. We are too.

  2. charlottedawg

best news yet to come, Kirby Smart’s gonna be the new outside linebackers coach y’all, I heard from a VERY, VERY, reliable source.

    • Cojones

That just shows to go you; I’m more closely aligned with the Bulldog powers than you and will bet the farm (my source was there when he and Richt spoke for the first time) that Kirby will be the D-backfield coach part time and ST coordinator part time. They are stil haggling over travel money.

  3. Debby Balcer

What a great way to start the week.

  4. So does he also coach Special Teams?

    • Bulldawg165

No but I believe he is also going to coach DBs so we will have an extra opening

      • Bulldawg165

^^^that is not confirmed though and I have no inside sources😉

      • The other Doug

        Wilson at DL
Olivadotti at LB – can he coach both ILB and OLB or are we going back to 3-4?
        Pruitt at DB

        • Garageflowers

We are a 3-4 base now.

        • Macallanlover

Pruitt runs a variation of the 3-4 that, like Granthm’s often has a four man front. From what I have read, we shouldn’t have a body-type issue to deal with like we did the first year of the CTG 3-4. What I am most excited about is the blitz packages he used at FSU. We brought heat a lot but it was poorly disguised/timed. Of course you would expect that when you often were not aligned completely before the snap.

  5. IAmAGurleyMan

I have a tingle down my leg larger than the tingle Chris Matthews felt when Obama was elected.

  6. D.N. Nation

GIven the….bizarre….timing on all of this, I’m chalking this up to Richt, McGarity, and even Grantham pulling a fast one on Bobby Petrino. $1M a year. Blows the mind.

    • Brandon

I think Petrino is serious about sobering up and is doing his 12 step work. Taking Grantham off our hands is his way of making amends to the State of Georgia for leaving the Falcons in the middle of the night. All is forgiven Bobby boy.

This is at least partially a result of CMR’s ethics and faith…this kind of thing is a reward for being that kind of a person.. There is always that classy element that wants to be part of something really decent…like the UGA football program. Georgia is doing things right. This is a good day for us all!

    • I Wanna Red Cup

If you are talking karma then ok but I don’t God gives a damn about who the DC at UGA.

      • WF Dawg

I don’t even think uglydawg was attributing this to any ultimate, supernatural cause, though FWIW, I don’t think he would have been wrong to do so.

      • Skeeter

Ooohh, even this atheist thinks you’re goin’ to Hell for that one, Wanna!

      • Tdawg89

You never know… Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

    • Dog in Fla

“This is at least partially a result of CMR’s ethics and faith”

While there is no doubt about CMR’s ethics and faith, the other part of it was that we had more money in our weapons arsenal than FSU had in theirs:

“As part of the university’s contract negotiations with Fisher, Wilcox said FSU already has built in an overall salary increase for the Seminoles’ nine assistant coaches. It will then be up to Fisher to decide which assistants receive raises and how much.

Wilcox said the overall increase will be 17 percent.

FSU’s highest-paid assistant right now is defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt at $500,000, and offensive line coach Rick Trickett is next at $455,000. The Seminoles’ nine assistants make a combined $2.86 million each year under their current contracts, so that pool will increase by about $486,000 to nearly $3.35 million.

“Within Jimbo’s contract, we built in a certain percentage increase for assistant coaches that he will basically be able to determine,” Wilcox told the Democrat on Thursday. “And then, generally, we might still have one or two assistant coaches who will get offers elsewhere, and then you may have to go back and look at, ‘Did we have enough in the pool to make sure that we keep that coach?’

“And if we don’t, we’ll need to go back and look at what we need to do to make sure that coach is happy and stays.”

  8. Cojones

B-b-but, he is a 4-3 guy and our players only can play 3-4. Pruitt had better know more than me if he’s going to turn this around!

All kidding aside, I hope we reward Wilson for the first improvement in our D-line in 3 years. They did well vs the run- you know- the problem that Todd Damn worked on after every friggin’ game.

  9. Big D

I watched Kirby play DB during my college years. We don’t want that…

  10. Billy Mumphrey

Now what do they do with the additional coaching vacancy?

  11. Trbodawg

This article is from 2010 when he was hired by Saban. It’s as tasty a cup of kool-aid as I’ve ever had.

  12. While our job is far from finished….the Ol’ Boys at Sports and Grits are taking a bit of a victory lap. Consider this – Martinez sucks, no S&G, Martinez keeps job. S&G hits the scene and no more Martinez or Van Halanger. Then we got a little lazy and Richt reciprocated. Then we got to hating again and got Grantham out…..then yesterday we shamed the program into making this hire. You are welcome Dawgs!

  13. ZeroPointZero

Let me get this straight. We get rid of a coach that basically sucked and everyone wanted to leave. We get $400k from Louisville. Then we hire one of the hottest D coordinators from the national championship Seminoles for the same $ as said sucky coordinator. Throw in a good recruiter and more inroads into talent rich Florida and I’ll sign on the dotted line right now.

  14. SouthGaDawg

Amazed that McGarity opened the coffers to pay for a real live DC. My faith hath been restored.

  15. Jimbo Fisher has lost 9 assistant coaches since he took over as HC in 2010. Back in February, Billy Napier quit after just 3 weeks as Tight Ends’s coach and had to pay FSU $75k to walk away. Maybe Jimbo is kinda of an ass?

  16. Beakerdawg

This is the day that a National Championship was conceived… See y’all in Big D.

  17. Gene Simmons

How’s this for brevity: “SUCK IT KIRBY!”
I hope he and Kiffykins have fun and perhaps we will see them in the ATL.

  18. JRW7

Congratulations, CMR on a great hire in CJP, GO DAWGS, I haven’t been this excited about the DAWGS in a long time!

  19. dawgtor

According to Rivals, we have only 16 recruits at this point, only two of whom were recruited by lakatos or grantham. FSU has 29 commits with Pruitt responsible for 6. This includes the #3 and #8 LBs (our current and only lb recruit is #19). Recruiting aside, I’m very, very excited about Pruitt. GATA

  20. Chuck

An insight into the mind of 18-21-year-olds: Supposedly the players are jacked up about the fact that CJP can bench 395.

  21. A10Penny

    Awesome news. My thoughts are:

#1 – We are rolling the dice a bit (relative lack of experience, and hired from the ACC), but that’s what we needed to do given the D treading water for two years.

#2 – CMR/B-M just got the defending National Champ’s DC to come to Athens (with an assist from Friend?) in less than 48 hours. For a reasonable (in this day and age) salary. This instills some extra faith in CMR/B-M.

#3 – It re-enforces the belief that UGA can do better than Grantham/average D. If CJP doesn’t pan out, hopefully we remember that. We recruit top-10 talent, we should reward them with top-10 caliber coaches.

#4 – This doesn’t fix ST or depth at DB. Perhaps another shoe to drop on the assistant coach front, and of course any effect to recruiting.

  22. AusDawg85

Harrah’s has Dawgs today at 55-1 down from 60-1 yesterday. I took that action!

FSU the fav at 5-2, then Bama & Oregon.

  23. Cosmic Dawg

‘Til I came to you, from Free Shoes U, through some miracle of fate…

  24. G Marmalarde

From what I’ve been reading, I really like this guy. Seems like a nice guy but able to motivate his players. Scheme sounds a lot like grantham but he has proven he can teach it to college players. Didn’t realize until now this was year 1 for fsu in the 3-4, stoops was 4-3. Guess they adjusted all right .

  25. Bama fan - but not trolling

Why all the hate on KS after this? He has not wronged Georgia by not coming back to coach there. Pretty good situation where he is – can’t blame him. Pruitt was a great coach at Bama and the players really liked him. FSU hired him away and now UGA did too. Makes me sad since I am BAMA fan and I have to admit that we thoroughly enjoyed Grantham being the DC🙂

    • Macallanlover

Everyone doesn’t hate him, as you could see from the comments over the past few days there are many who wanted him. Others, like me, feel he played us when we needed a DC three years ago. He gave all indications that he wanted to come home but then sold out for the higher money at Alabama. Loyalty isn’t something you put up for bid so he burned some bridges there. I think Smart would have been better off coming to UGA, or going somewhere different, and proving his worth away from Saban. There are many who don’t know if it is “live, or is it Memorex?”. Those questions are legit because of Saban’s domineering style. I think everyone would wish him well once he goes somewhere other than the SEC. If he stays in the SEC, he becomes a target, just like Agent Muschamp.

    • Normaltown Mike

I’d say much of the “hatin” on Kirby is the usual internet garbage that leads some guys to post things about supermodels like “I wouldn’t fuck her” or “what a dog”.

If Kirby had been hired, the same internet Adonis would be crowing that their source “close to the program” had told them this was in the works.

  26. Go Dawgs!

The best part of the whole situation is that it happened so quickly. This completely exposes a LOT of windbags who claim to be insiders with behind-the-scenes information to be complete frauds. Oh, so you’re saying we’re making a run at Kirby Smart first and we’re now just waiting for the details to be worked out? No. It took 41 hours to get our man from Florida State, and I guarantee you that there was no time wasted on other candidates if we got a coach hired that quickly. If it had taken longer, the idiots could hem and haw about how what they said didn’t turn out for one reason or another. This way, no, buddy. You’re clearly just making stuff up for purposes of self aggrandizement.
