“Championship games, they’ve been great for TV.”

I fear that deregulation is one of those words that’s not well served by being placed in scare quotes.

    I don’t like this. Politics will determine the 2 teams. Why have a conference championship if the greatest concern is getting 2 teams in the playoffs?

      I have never understood the “greatest concern is getting two (conference) teams in the playoffs” at all. I understand the dollars involved with getting two in the BCS angle in the past, but we should all want the best teams in the playoffs, regardless of conference. With the limit at 4 teams, hopefully short term, one from the SEC is all that is justified, to me anyway. When we get to 8 teams, then a second team from one conference is an issue. I always care about crowning the best SEC champion first, and I think the current system does a great job of that. I feel more conference games during the regular season would be even better so I strongly endorse playing nine conference games in the SEC as soon as it can get scheduled.

    If this passes I vote that we kick Arkansas, South Carolina, Mizzou and Texas A&M out of the conference and go to a 9 game conference schedule where each team remaining in the SEC plays every other team every season in a round-robin schedule. The only reason the SEC expanded in the first place was to be able to hold a conference championship game and get all the $$ from that. If the SEC can hold the SECCG and can split the dough 10 ways rather than 14 ways, the reason for expansion has disappeared and the payoff per school just got increased.

        The 4 of them can get together and rip off a couple of Big 12 teams and a couple of ACC teams then start their own conference. Call it the “Rejects Conference.”

          I said the above in jest but if you look at the map Arkansas, Texas A&M and Missouri could be the guts of a pretty good conference. They are all 3 in the Central time zone and not really that far apart. If you added both teams from Kansas and both teams from Oklahoma (also Central Time Zone) you could have a 7 team conference that would be among the better ones in the country, certainly better than the AAC for example. For football, I’ve always felt that 7 members is the ideal conference size as each team can play every other team in a season and only take up 6 games allowing for 3 home and away games with good teams from other conferences, plus 3 home game cupcakes. Add that up and each season teams would have either 7 or 8 home games. Plus there is a good mix of basketball schools in with schools that historically were good in football. See–bigger really isn’t better. Leave out South Carolina though because of geography–plus the Dicks…er…Cocks don’t really add anything.

              Realize that label was used before but I think only the original pioneer settlers would consider Arkansas, Mizzou, Kansas, Texas, etc. as any part of the West. Mid-South maybe, we used Mid Continent as the designation for one of our company’s operating unit for that geography (included up to Nebraska, the Dakotas, etc.

              While I don’t like the way conference additions were done, and wouldn’t have the teams in those conferences if I were planning the expansion, it doesn’t bother me to have Arkansas, SC, and Mizzou in our conference. And I love getting A&M, and their football traditions into the SEC.

                Mac….It was a joke. Aussie and I were kidding. And Arkansas and Texas A&M were both in the old South West Conference so the conference name thing isn’t really that geographically crazy, although I do like Mid Continent Conference, too. 🙂

                  Understand but you have to admit that there are many fans who resent the expansion purely on geographical location, and they seriously suggest reform of those changes. Not that it matters what fans think.

                  One thing that always impressed me was the entire SW Conference, except Arky, was comprised of Texas schools. Another reason I support adding Texas to the SEC.
