Drinks are on the house!

Evidently the problem with the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party isn’t the cocktail part or the party part.  It’s the outdoor part.

Georgia-Florida had been known as the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” but the schools have cooled to that name in recent years due to excessive alcohol use on campus and CBS was asked in 2006 to stop referring to the game with that name.

The SEC allows private areas such as suites at games to serve alcohol. That is already done in Jacksonville.

Because it’s a proven fact that the rich handle their boozing better than the great unwashed do.  Must be something about their metabolism.

Hypocrisy smells like the St. John’s River.

I thought we already had this debate Senator. As it thrns out some of us are thoughtful egalitarians and therefore good Americans and some of us are narrow-minded, elitist, jack asses that believe that there is a size of bank account/character correlation and would thus be lining up to be fitted for their Gestapo uniforms if /when called upon to do so.

The entire narrative just gets old man. Class warfare is for weak people. It’s generally not someone else’s fault where we end up in life. And demonizing people for having money is nothing more than jealousy and a manifestation of one’s own greed. I’m not rich but I dont resent anyone who is. At all. I can drink beer while tail gating or in a bar. No big deal that I can’t do it in the stadium and someone with money can. That’s what they get for dropping the extra coin. Makes sense to me. Besides, I know I have drank inside Sanford before and I don’t sit in the money seats. Heh, heh, heh.

Class warfare my ass. It is hypocrisy not class effing warfare. If the rationale for NOT selling beer to those in seats is that whomever runs the place is incentivizing suite rentals then fine. However the stated reason for not selling beer and wine is that the fans cannot handle alcohol sales while selling to a portion of those folks.

That’s stupid Senator. I don’t “want” it to be about anything. It’s just how it comes across when you word it the the way you do. If that’s not how you meant it then fair enough. Still, I have a hard time getting offended by their “hypocrisy” since I, along with everyone else, can get loaded enough before hand if I so choose, that ill still be plenty buzzed after the game, without being able to by drinks inside the stadium. Its just not a big deal to me. Are they full of it? Probably so. But it’s not like anybody is stopping anybody from tailgating. I think the lame attempt to change the game’s image is going nowhere. It will always be The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party whether Vern and Gary allowed to call it that on TV or not.

Anyone ever think that the reason for selling alcohol in the suites is that it is an incentive to encourage people to pay more money to sit in the suites. It would be a factor for me. Between the 40s and no drinks or in a suite on the 10 with drinks – tough call.

But that isn’t what the Jack folks are saying. They are not saying, “we want to incentivize suiterentals and that is why we don’t sell beer at the concession stands that sell beer at NFL games.” Instead they are self righteous about the evils of alcohol at a football game while making a buck off of alcohol sales to some of those same fans.
              Self righteous hypocrites .

I quit going to Falcons games because of drunks in the stands and it was a damn shame. Two drunk twenty somethings were cussiong and raising and spilling beer everywhere, including on my pregnant wife. We left before someone was murdered. You ever piss off a pregnant woman? That was in the 80s and I haven’t been to a Falcons game since. Keep the drunks in the suites please, unless I hit the powerball jackpot I won’t be joining them. Drunks make a stadium no place to take your kids and spouse and kids are the future fans.

I hope I’m pretty egalitarian in my views, but I’ll again throw out some potential reasons why it doesn’t offend me that the skyboxes have booze and the bleacher seats don’t.

If you have a bartender catering to a small crowd, he can more easily identify how many trips you’ve made to the bar and monitor your behavior. As we all have seen, a lunatic at a big event can get refused service at one bar and straighten up long enough to get a drink at another bar.

Certain places promote certain kinds of behavior. People feel anonymous in a large crowd, and they’re more likely to do anything in a large crowd – drop their pants, yell “Freebird”, throw a rock, whatever. Put a redneck in a skybox and he’s more likely to behave. Put a rich guy at a rock concert and he’s more likely to act out. So access to the environment where people follow the norm around them and behave is more the issue than singling out a “class” of people who can’t behave.

In a skybox, you can choose whether you want to be around people drinking or not. You don’t have to allow drinking in your skybox. In the stadium you wouldn’t have that option, and it’s already a questionable place to take little kids at times. In some ways, if you allow drinking in the stadium, you are being less egalitarian because you’re not allowing people looking for a family friendly environment a way to enjoy themselves without purchasing a skybox. It’s not like Chastain Park where you can gauge what kind of crowd it’s going to be by the artist who’s playing – it’s a football game where a lot of people are (probably too) emotionally invested in the outcome as it is.

Finally, people who act out generally have less to lose. In the skybox, you’ll find people who already have access to power. They’re not looking to prove anything with a fistfight, and their friends probably don’t think it’s a riot to pee in a trashcan. You also generally expect people who can hold onto money have learned to lead with their heads and not their emotions. They may be more likely to be at the game with clients, and in any event I don’t think you pay $20k for skybox if you’re looking to raise hell. Now, I think 95% of the people in the regular seats have similar priorities. But you’re not trying to keep booze from those people. You’re trying to keep booze from the 5% knucklehead contingent that think a UGA game is the same as Saturday night at some cinderblock bar on a state highway.

Is it fair to penalize people before they do something wrong? No, but we’re not talking about the City of Athens, we’re talking about people who manage an already fractious environment trying to consider the best thing for everyone concerned, and there are no age limits on the attendees.

(btw – I do not think the rich are more moral than the poor – not at ALL. I just think that when they sin perhaps it tends to happen on paper and when they’re stone cold sober…;) )

Is there some reason you can’t deal with that by having family friendly sections?

No, actually I think that’s an excellent idea, and I think that would be a great way to give everybody what they want. I’m no teetotaler – I worked in live music for 10 years – but if there was a family friendly section I’d probably take my daughter to games b/c you’d probably find many of the…ah…more vocal folks who currently drink a lot before the game would choose the drinking section.

So now…I am fascinated by the question – in which section would you find the most annoying “I paid my ticket I’ll yell ‘fire Bobo’ as much as I want” sideline coach types? Would it be the non-drinking section, with its ample representation of uptight, sanctimonious, overly-judgmental Serious Football People, or would it be the drinking section with its contingent of uninhibited, crazytown, weeping-over-football people?

They need to come up with an assholes friendly section and put those folks in one spot together. We’d all be happier.

+1. To the as whole friendly section. There are drunks in the stadium a plenty. They are drunk before they get there or smuggle liquor in. Also it is a matter of liability I am sure. It is easier to see who needs cut off in a suite.

That sure didn’t work when they tried it in tailgating spots. I suppose it could work if they made that section large enough that most people would be surrounded by folks with the same inclinations. Of course some of the folks in the edge of the section might still have to deal with some things they had rather not deal with. But unfortunately, if drunken behavior is seriously offensive to someone, they should probably steer clear of this game.

Hypocrisy was in full force and effect at the SEC tourney last night as well – there is a small part of the club level set off where you can buy beer/liquor if you have a club ticket, but you can’t take it to your seat (which means we watched the Kentucky-LSU game from the club). They do the same thing at the Dome for the football championship game…
