Just when you think the NCAA can’t get any NCAA-ier, it does.
A ludicrous situation on so many levels, stupidity like this has the effect of making you sympathetic to the union argument.

UPDATE:
“Then they informed him of the NCAA’s harsh penalty for a first failed test: a minimum one-year suspension from all competition.”
They need to give Michael Adams a spot on the Rules Committee to lighten it up a little bit

I would like to see the NCAA take complete control of all drug testing. The current student-athlete appears to care very little about failing a drug test. A college wide 1 year suspension for the first failed test would certainly pack a punch and hopefully make kids think twice before tokin’ up. I have zero sympathy for kids that fail drug tests. They are told repeatedly what’s coming.

For a non-performance enhancing substance that’s being legalized/de-criminalized all over the country? That’s a little over the top.

I am open to suggestions. We know that the punishment for 1st and 2nd time offenses at UGA carry little to no weight, so what would you suggest? Would 50% of a season for 1st offenders be strong enough? The kids pay little to the rule as it stands now.

The penalty for first-time marijuana possession in Ann Arbor is a $25 fine. Why is it necessary for the NCAA to punish a kid far in excess of what the local authorities do?

I suggest not testing for, or caring about, recreational drugs.
I also suggest that there should be a rule that any drug testing policy put in place for players should also extend to coaches, administrators, and the NCAA President’s immediate family. Sauce, geese, ganders, etc….

And, if I may, add to the list of drugs….alcohol and Red Bull.

Damn right. The suits in the Butts-Mehre Building make decisions affecting millions of dollars. As a Hartman Fund and Basketball Enhancement. Fund contributor I would like to be reassured the suits ate clear headed. Same for Morehead.

Lol. Why do you care whether your entertainers use marijuana? Do you hold the musicians who produce the music you listen to to the same standard? Better not listen to any pop, rock, rap, or gritty country produced in the last 50 years if you do.

Better not do anything anywhere with anyone…chances are most of the people he knows have, will or are smoking pot.
Most didnt face a year suspension for their first run in.

What is going to happen to state of Colorado players I wonder?

Just because it is legal doesnt mean that a group has to allow it.
Though I believe that there is currently a case heading to the supreme court to decide if you can be fired for off the clock use, though I think that this pertains to medical.

Currently at Colorado University marijuana is against team rules and school policy.
