You know what they say about first impressions.

Alabama athletics director Bill Battle, on his reaction to Saban hiring Junior:

My first reaction, because I didn’t know Lane, wasn’t very positive. I talked to Coach Saban about it. He asked me if I had ever met him and I said no. He said, “Why don’t you meet him?” He had him in for a visit, I spent about an hour with him and I was very impressed. I followed up and talked to several different people. I called (athletics director) Pat Haden at Southern California. I talked to David Blackbird, who’s the AD at UT-Chattanooga. David was the compliance officer for football at Tennessee when Lane was there. They both told me that they thought he would be a great fit here, and I got really comfortable with it.

So the last guy who fired the Laner and the guy who had to keep up with his regular brushes with secondary violations at Tennessee told you he’d be a great fit at Alabama?  Maybe you should consider the source, man.

No, they were being completely truthful when they said Kiffin would fit right in at Alabama.

“Stated his large rims throw the speedometer off.”

The same thing happens to Lane all the time.

I’m a little surprised that the AD never met Kiffin prior to the hire. Would that be typical at any other school or is it just a Saban thing?

UA will likely get what they deserve on this one…

Maybe Bill Battle doesn’t have much experience when it come to hiring and firing people in the new millennium. I never bad-mouth an ex-employee. EVER.

Agreed. Haden pulling Kiffen off the bus before sunrise to hurry him on his way had to be a first though. But Lane didn’t leave the cupboard bare and he was struggling with the loss of what 10 or 12 schollys? I am usually not too considerate when it comes to other teams coaches. Kiffen was no exception. There is some angst among the Dawg faithful over the SOS comments. The SEC will be a poorer place when that cock hangs up his spurs. Just sayin’ 😉

A great fit at Bama? Maybe they have the same opinion of Bama as some of us?

No one ever said Kiffin couldn’t make a good impression when you talk to him. Talking is something he’s good at. Look at how many good jobs he’s talked his way into. Performance on the field, however, different story.

Bill Battle may be another example of a coach like Saban making the AD look better and smarter than he is.

The only thing keeping this from being a trifecta was Hamilton.
