Meet my new buzzword for Georgia’s defense this year:
“We want to be a little twitchier on the defensive front, which is maybe a little bit different than the things were in the past. We have plenty of size…”
Seriously, there are two things to take away from this. One, Pruitt’s got a specific vision in mind and he’s got the S&C staff on board.
“We want to trim up a little bit at linebacker so we can play all three downs. And in the secondary, all those guys are built a little different, so (director of strength and conditioning) ‘Coach T’ (Joe Tereshinski) sat down and he’s got an individual plan for all of them. We’ve got a plan. And the kids, we’re going to help them execute it during the summer.”
And two, as last night’s Dawg Porn indicated, he’s a little more optimistic about the defense than he let on before.
Pruitt’s tone was a bit softer Wednesday.
Worried? Alarmed?
Those words aren’t in his vocabulary.
“As long as you’ve got effort and attitude, you can overcome a lot of things. And that’s the big thing we’re going to focus on this summer: effort and attitude,” Pruitt said. “If you lack the skill set or anything like that but you’ve got good effort and good attitude, you’ve got a chance to overcome it. If you ain’t got that, you’re in trouble.”
The story going into fall camp is going to be from which players he can coax that. But it sounds like he’s confident he can find guys who can play. That’s making me twitchier.

And it seems like we’ve gotten rid of the some of the attitude problems… whether by their own choice or not…sets a strong tone for the rest of the team.

+1. Couldn’t agree more. Few things are more important. It’s something that has haunted us for 8 years, peaking in 2008-10. But it’s never gone away, and we saw it last year.
One of Pruitt’s primary tasks, IMO.

I tell you what… That man knows what to say and when. Just when he had us sweating bullets a touch he flips the switch on the fan.
I think individual S&C plans that are player specific are long overdue. We are a team but every cog needs its own type of grease from time to time. This guy really gets me fired up.

Not many of those are left, and can you set yourself for them when they seem to be the minority? Unfortunately the key ones, in addition to us, are SC, LSU, and Bama in the conference. Ohio, ND, Wisky, Meechigan, and State Penn may be the only other significant ones nationally. Defensive coordinators in the SEC and Big Whatever are the ones most effected.

It’s a valid concern, but I’d still point to Charlie Strong’s 2008 Florida D as a good counterexample. Often there were 5 DBs on the field, none of them big, and the D line was built for speed as well. Also, Muschamp’s D last year was top 10, and the entire secondary was a bunch of small former cornerbacks.
Speed + numbers seems to be the way to go now.

I dunno, logic says it would hurt. But then you look at our big beefy defense that couldn’t stop anything on the ground against Bama 2 years ago. I know depth issues played a role in that, but I’d like to think that a slimmer, quicker, more disruptive D that has good depth will be able to do good things against any offense. For me I think building and using depth in the front 7 is the biggest key in the college game now.
Plus it’s not like we’re talking about playing a bunch of little guys. For some of them, they’re talking playing at 300 lbs instead of 320 or 330. But a 300 lb man is still a lot of mass to move.

Plus, he’s harder to move where you want him to go because he’s quicker. And he moves a whole lot better without a needless 30 pounds of extra fat to carry around.

Where better to get a second, third and/or fourth opinion than around here? “Multiple twitchifications” must have been what I had when I pointed and stared at the tv in the visitors lounge during pass coverage breakdowns but my attending physician looked at me blankly and said don’t worry they’re just like petit mal seizures

It isnt a new concept. Grantham talked about twitch. Probably 3rd and willie was always on twitch…Coach Porn Stache was on about twitch.
It is buzz word jargon non-sense. Every coach in the country talks about it.

Another great comment from last night was when CJP said the players will make their weight goals. I also appreciated his comments about weight being associated with being in shape and that tired players have a hard time knowing the call and executing it.

This is the headline of the article, and I hope it sinks in with those who are worried or concerned about losing JHC, Bostick, Wiggins, or anybody else (except maybe Floyd, but he’s not going anywhere).
There’s simply no need to worry. Pruitt will coach up the guys who want to play, and they’ll be more effective than what we’ve seen in the past.
“Twitch.” It’s a great word, I’ve always liked it. Just a super descriptive adjective, though it’s not easy to define. As a current example, Leonard Floyd has ample twitch. Jordan Jenkins doesn’t, probably because he’s never really worked, and needs much more, a lot more.
A living definition of twitch would be Champ Bailey in his prime.

I hope you’re right. But the belief that a 2-star recruit with a give-’em-hell attitude will be a superior player to a 4-star recruit who can run faster and hit harder has been around for a long time. And it rarely seems to pan out.
I hope Pruitt can improve the defense. I’m hopeful that he’s a superior coach to Grantham/Lakatos. I believe in fundamentals over a complicated scheme that the players can’t execute. But I’m not sold on the notion that any kid with a good attitude is superior to a kid with superior athletic skills. And, given Pruitt’s skills as a recruiter, I’m guessing he’s not either.

Frankly isn’t that a pretty good story? If we compare/contrast Ramik Wilson’s sophomore year with Jenkins soph year I would say he had an outstanding year. You’ve pointed out here that he has played too many video games when he should be attending the play book but I honestly have no clue. And I don’t see how you do either.

Again, if you think that bio yields the story of Jenkin’s 2013, then go ahead and think that. Doesn’t bother me. You go by the bio, I’ll go by the film.
The comparison to Ramik has nothing to do with it. You can do that if you want, but it has nothing to do with anything I’ve said.
If you have no clue what you’re talking about, which you obviously don’t, that is immaterial to the subject. That you can’t comprehend how I know what I know is likewise immaterial.
Jenkins history is what it is, a matter of record. It can’t be changed, even though some, like yourself, might like to revise it. I bring it up, because it has everything to do with the current subject matter. It couldn’t be more relevant.
How these players, especially those like Jenkins, respond this summer will have as much to do with how our 2014 season turns out as anything. Maybe more than anything else. It’s hard to overstate how critical the summer is for us.
What we should be doing is hoping these players, particularly those like Jenkins, respond. And we should hope Jenkins maxes out, so he has a chance to become the player we know he can be. He forfeited that opportunity last year, and it showed on the field.
He can never make that up, it is forever lost. And his Georgia career can never be what it might have been. But he can still reach his potential and have a great career, especially if he buys in and stays 2 more years.
That is what I would like to see.

Jordan Jenkins came onto the scene in 2012 playing opposite of Jarvis Jones. He recorded 31 tackles and five sacks in nine starts. In 2013, Jenkins started all 13 games and tallied 45 tackles and five sacks. He also had 12 tackles for loss, which led the team and was eighth-best in the SEC, and registered two fumble recoveries.

Amarlo Herrera needs to lose 20lb…he’s the slowest LB we’ve ever had…can’t run sideline to sideline…I know HE thinks he’s good bc he racked up 100+ tackles, but that’s because the defense couldn’t get off the field…glad It’s his last year!
