Inspired mashup from Spencer Hall:

It would have been nice to stick that “yeah! yeah! yeah! yeah!” from the ’78 UK game somewhere in there, but I’m quibbling.

    Equating the US team beating Ghana in soccer with our beating of UT in Knoxville for the first time since Herschel’s first game is frankly offensive. I was in Knoxville that day. I remember collapsing about the same time verron’s foot hit that ugly ass orange checkerboard end zone. That was awesome. Incredible. Best feeling ever. Had to hear Larry’s call later as I was up in the Georgia section in the nosebleed seats. That night was the last time I saw a room spin from far too much Jack.

    As for yesterday, I wasn’t watching and don’t care. It’s not the same. Won’t ever be the same. Don’t even try.

      I feel sorry for Derek. He can’t even cheer for his country’s team. If you don’t want to watch that’s fine, but to insinuate that a fun mashup including Munson is offensive to a play that few outside of the south remember is downright stupid. You realize the soccer game, on a Monday with half the country still at work, outdrew the NBA finals and the final round of the US Open which were held on a Sunday, right? A lot of people care. Tough shit for you asshat.

        You can watch a bunch of guys who couldn’t play real sports kick around a soccer ball trying to beat a country that ain’t got enough electricity to keep a beer cold and enjoy the hell out if it. To each their own. Hell, some people worship Satan. I’m guessing that there are some people who wish we sported a national cricket team. Maybe we do. Don’t care. As far as popularity is concerned justin beiber and Britney Spears sell a bunch of records. Doesn’t mean that they don’t suck. Many many people enjoy horrible, terrible things like soccer. I’d just appreciate it if we’d leave Larry out of it. As far as the national team winning the world cup, everybody knows that isn’t going to happen. Our best athletes play real sports. The fact that we have zero chance of winning the World Cup should put the tournament in its proper perspective as meaningless . Why? If we cared, we’d win or at least be in the conversation. Any American who raises the importance of the World Cup is really saying is that we suck at something that matters. That’s unpatriotic. We do suck at soccer, but it’s ok, because it doesn’t matter.

          I tend to agree with Derek. The sport is dreadful. Run around for 90 minutes and 3 goals is considered high scoring? We laughed at Miss State and Auburn a few years ago with their 3-2 game. That’s the same crap you get in the World Cup. Now the WWL promotes the living hell out of this pantywaste of an event begging us to care about a sport no one watches in the US until it’s party time once every four years. As Derek said, the best athletes in this country play other sports…real sports. What do I care what a bunch of European countries want to play? They would all be speaking German if not for our great nation. In short, soccer blows.

            That was true when it was said. The first professional soccer league started in America in 1968. Coincidence?

    Nice little compilation. Having listened to Munson throughout all his years with the Bulldogs, I’ll never be able to hear another radio play-by-play announcer without the inevitable comparison to Larry. I suppose it’s much like comparing boxers to Ali or pitchers to Koufax. Not many rise to that level. I’ll always be grateful that Munson was one of us, a DGD!

        IDK. There are posters here that write their own blogs and have an appreciation for international sports. Maybe they can answer that for you. Soccer is much appreciated among kids. When on vacay in CR I found my two young sons shoeless away from the pool and eats playing soccer with a bunch of 8 and 10 year old locals they didn’t know. So I sat and watched. When they were done I brought them all back and bought them all lunch. Kinda disturbed the manager. They were a motley crew of kids. So … took them in to town bought them all inexpensive but new shorts and tanks and soccer socks,( Soccer Socks remember Sesame St.) and shoes and declared them all my guests and my soccer team.It wasn’t expensive but the manager was glad to see me go. My bride might have been embarrassed by my attitude. Kids exchanged postcards for a brief time.

          Our soccer team in HS was really good and ask us Varsity Cheerleaders to come to the playoffs and support them. We had to decline. It is not a very interesting sport and I have never understood why it is so popular. With LM even soccer is exciting.

    GO USA! That’s great and must be a lot of fun for the soccer guys here. Haven’t watched soccer since the kids were in elementary/jr high and before they moved on to other sports. I never played soccer. I will say it did a lot for their agility and endurance but it was hot on that sideline watching games and practice! The drives to all the games… yikes and the out of control parents were a lot to deal with at times! And then there was Chucky Cheese after every game it seemed. Oh man I am not a soccer guy. Going to swim meets was kinda boring too. Don’t get me wrong I was the willing dad. But I’m not sure I miss some of that. But I have to say my wife loved it. Sometimes she got a little out of control. Must be the sport. And people say our football is dangerous. Hmmmm.

    You described that experience pretty well, AHD..To those of us who lived it, it was b-o-r-i-n-g…but necessary and expected. Soccer at that level is pretty unbearable to those of us who would rather be fishing, reading GTP or watching paint dry..Important time and experience for the kddos, but I don’t miss it.
