Georgia Tech embraces the new paradigm.

Tech’s getting a nice bump in TV money.

The distribution from the ACC increased by 32 percent, from $17.9 million to $23.6 million. The distribution largely comes from ESPN, and the boost is a result of the ACC’s renegotiated contract with the network after the addition of Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse, the grant of rights and the upcoming college football playoff. (According to the budget notes, the playoff agreement is worth $3 million in new revenue and the additions to the ACC were worth $2.5 in additional revenue.)

Which is a good thing, because ticket revenues are heading in the wrong direction.

Ticket sales revenue, while budgeted conservatively, is projected to drop from $11.6 million to $9.8 million. It’s the second-largest source of revenues after the ACC distribution. A projected slight drop in season ticket sales, six home games (as opposed to seven) and the even-year schedule without a home game against Georgia are primary factors.

Four tickets, four hot dogs and four cokes can only take an athletic department so far.

And this doesn’t help things on the buyout front, either:

The reserve fund, from which money can be taken in case of budget shortfalls, is at about $2.5 million. The goal for the fund is to be at least $5 million. The department had to draw on the reserve fund in the 2013 fiscal year due to a $1.8 million shortfall, largely due to expenses related to the ACC football championship game and the ensuing trip to the Sun Bowl.

Greg McGarity is laughing at the superior intellect.

I especially like the factor that not having a home game with us significantly reduces Tech’s ticket revenue. Tee hee.

Not only is “four tickets, 4 hot dogs, and 4 cokes” not working, the “triple option” fails in more ways than one….

  3. No one wants to go watch a high school offense, and no one wants to play in a high school offense – imagine that. I can’t wait to see what happens when GSU comes calling to the Flats. They’ll play the game in about 2 1/2 hours with all of the running. I’m liking the Eagles’ chance to get another scalp from players who want to play in that system vs. players who have to play in that system. I hope GSU has a very vocal minority at historic Mark Richt Stadium at Vince Dooley Field.

It’s a 12 noon game. Georgia Southern fans may not be the minority.

GSU has a new head coach installing a the spread. Was hoping to see a game with a total of 4 forward passes, not really.

Tech can’t defend well against the pass. Plus most of the Georgia Southern guys grew up hating Tech and Florida.

If they get the offense figured out by game 3, they may have a chance.

      • I didn’t realize that. That’s not going to be good for the GSU guys. The last time they tried this it was a disaster.

I just hope they can’t afford a buy out on CPJ’s contract.

I don’t think many TVs in Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Boston, and Louisville will be tuning in to watch the triple option.

They can’t sell tickets, they can’t beat us, and the once mighty Golden Tornado has fizzled into a soft summer breeze. Do you suppose the Tech AD ever gets an earful from The Varsity about lost revenue on non-UGA game days?

Since all the NATS jokes are taken I’ll just ponder the general question which is, how did athletic associations like this one especially get by before TV deals?

It’s all a clever NATS plot to rationalize the inevitable move to the FCS so they don’t have to play us every year. Maybe they can develop a bitter, balanced rivalry with Kennesaw State.

Disagree on the triple option. Personally, I enjoy watching the offense when it’s run correctly. Of course, I can’t stand Tech but the offense can be effective at times.

yes , but only if guys on defense start blowing assignments, if a d is able to play disciplined the triple option is no more than a bunch of backyard plays

Hey guys, this increase in revenue at Tech is a good thing. Now they will have the money to give Paul TheJohnson a nice raise, maybe heading off TheJohnson leaving for greener pastures…somewhere.
