What a drag it is getting old.

About four weeks ago, I pinched a nerve in my leg.  It hurt like hell but was clearing up… until I did something really stupid in my garage.  I woke up yesterday unable to get out of bed… took something that dampened the pain, but left me not in a blogging mood.

I’m a little better today, so we’ll see how far along I go.

Man I feel your pain. Pinched nerve in my neck last summer and this summer sprained my back. Like a fool I grabbed a pair of dumbbells off the floor with all the care and caution you would for picking up a pair of socks…..

Please take care I yourself. I screwed up my back when I was 30 and didn’t take enough time to rest and ended up doing permenant damage. I am now 38 and have had constant pain since then and will for the rest of my life. Nerves are nothing to play around with…unless you are trolling 😉

Correct, Ray. Hope everyone, including Bluto, takes heed and they tend to it like life itself is threatened. From a broken coccyx (age 33 river float over small waterfall -untreatable) to lower back injury (age 49 skiing accident -eschewed treatment of back operation for pain offered at age 54) to painful arthritis of hips and knees (all need replacing) and final insult of left hip replacement that’s resulted in painful deep vein thrombosis and life-threatening lung embolism pain (problem: -if I take recommended narcotic, how do I alert physician to new developments of clot-movement pain?). Don’t get used to pain as I have; spare yourself from energy drain and life-altering habits that affect those around you. Good humor helps immensely, but you have to work hard at it. Have your wife take you to a strip show.

A pinched nerve can produce more pain (every time you move or stir) than ailments mentioned above. Treat it now and quit the “I gotta go to work” syndrome that exacerbates pain. Lay back and dream of our great season to come. Didn’t we do well when you left us to our own devices? Insert smiley face.

It takes guts to get old. Too late, shmart about treating pain.

Smoke’em if you got’em. The irony here is that smoking exacerbates my pain, but makes me sleepy enough to get rest. So, I usually drink about 6 shots of tequila and beg for sex until sleep arrives. Unfortunately, the Amnesian has an I-Pod as an alternate lover. Sought to end the cuckolding by sending photo of me in my birthday suit to her I-Pod. After her regaling laughter stopped ringing in my ears, she told me that it needed ironing.

Missed you yesterday, Bluto…made us all worry a little and some of us were getting the DTs for need of the fix. Hope you’re better..Take it easy. Take it eeeeeeasy…sorry.

I recently turned 40 and have to my dismay found that I don’t recover from things like I did 10 years ago. Now, it takes 3 days after a leg day in the gym to walk without soreness, I have to ice my shoulders on a regular basis, and I’m seeing more gray hairs every morning. Getting older can kiss my ass.

Go to PT or DR soon. I had some nerve issues in my back that caused leg pain. Had I gone to PT early on, probably would have never needed surgery. Often, we can develop everyday motions that put added stress on certain areas and make them vulnerable to injury. Correcting those through PT or Chiro can make us much less vulnerable to injury.

Don’t bogart that button my friend, pass the 3,4,5 trimethoxyphenethylamine over to Melissa Joan Hart (“I experimented with weed, [Countdown to] Ecstasy, mushrooms and mescaline for about a year and a half,” Hart tells Life and Style magazine).

We were in Mudcat’s Impala in back country somewhere around the edge of the desert when Melissa Joan Hart began to take hold and chant wiki saying tyrosine and phenylalanine serve as the metabolic precursors to synthesis of mescaline. Tyrosine can either undergo a decarboxylation via tyrosine decarboxylase to generate tyramine and subsequently undergo an oxidation at carbon 3 by a monophenol hydroxylase or first be hydroxylated by tyrosine hydroxylase to form L-DOPA and decarboxylated by DOPA decarboxylase. These create dopamine, which then experiences methylation by a catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) by an S-adenosyl methionine (SAM)-dependent mechanism. The resulting intermediate is then oxidized again by a hydroxylase enzyme, likely monophenol hydroxylase again, at carbon 5, and methylated by COMT. The product, methylated at the two meta positions with respect to the alkyl substituent, experiences a final methylation at the 4 carbon by a guaiacol-O-methyltransferase, which also operates by a SAM (Surface-to-Air Missile) -dependent mechanism. This final methylation step results in the production of mescaline or you could just snap it off a cactus like you do a rattlesnake’s tail, now pass it over to me my friend because we can outrun any trooper in this state and who wants to open with a prayer?

          Here ya go…
“But trying to mix writing and fucking around with old friends don’t work no more, this maddening, time-killing late-work syndrome, never getting down to the real machine action until two or three at night, won’t make it… especially half drunk full of pills and grass with deadlines past and people howling in New York… the pressure piles up like a hang-fire lightning ball in the brain. Tired and wiggy from no sleep or at least not enough. Living on pills, phone calls unmade, people unseen, pages unwritten, money unmade, pressure piling up all around to make some kind of breakthrough and get moving again. Get the gum off the rails, finish something, croak this awful habit of not ever getting to the end – of anything.” Hunter S. Thompson, First Visit with Mescalito (Los Angeles, 1969)
I met Hunter in an elevator once… we shot a few games of gold. Sweet.

Good point. I never got Carlos Casteneda. Kind of like the same way I never got Thom Pynchon. I never met any of them, Hunter included although I always thought it was strange that he killed himself

My experience is that people who claim to “get” Thomas Pynchon are trying to tell you what deep thinking intellectuals they are, and generally they tell you that in a very condescending way. “Oh, you don’t understand Pynchon? That’s too bad; his imagery and nuance really aren’t for EVERYONE, I suppose.” The word “everyone” is hit with the same inflection and tone such highly evolved life forms use when they say “morons” or “sports fans.” Me personally, I think they just pretend to like his work so they can sneer at those of us in the lumpen proletariat who find him to be a pretentious, self absorbed bore.

If you like Thomas Pynchon, however, good for you. I love to read, and I have a slightly higher than room temperature IQ, but I’d rather jam a screwdriver into both eyes than have to read another paragraph of that guy’s work.

At least Hunter Thompson was interesting, albeit completely deranged.

Based on your symptoms, I wouldnt be surprised if you herniated an L5/S1 nerve in your lower back and the pinched nerve is shooting pain down your leg. That pain is miserable. That was my problem but I finally got a laminectomy-microdiscectomy (should be a last option) and have felt amazing ever since. I’m only 32 which is a bummer given the limitations I can now put on my body.
