The new roster is here! The new roster is here!

Here’s the link.  Weiszer’s post about it is here.  Seth has his observations here.

Overall, it’s about what you might expect.  The defensive front has shed weight, with the only d-lineman weighing more than 300 pounds is freshman Lamont Gaillard.  (Ed. note:  Chris Mayes shows up at over 300 pounds, as well.)  The offensive line has grown, with Zach DeBell adding an astounding 25 pounds.  Outside linebacking has picked up size, while on the inside Wilson added a few pounds and Herrera has dropped a bunch – 13 pounds to 231 (if that makes him quicker and improves his stamina without affecting his strength, he could be somebody to watch next month).

A couple of names caught my eye.  Theus is up to 313 now, which is good-sized for a tackle.  The question is how mobile he is.  And on the other side, Ray Drew bucked the trend and added eight pounds.  Better strength, or could that be a reason he’s not been able to push up the depth chart yet?

The number I was most interested in seeing turned out to be 226.  That’s Todd Gurley’s listed weight.  It’s a few pounds less than last year’s official weight, but not so much that you worry about his ability to plow into defenders.

What do you guys see?

He quietly contributed a good bit last year and will certainly need to show up in ’14 with the loss of Taylor. He, like Taylor, is fairly raw but very strong and has lots of upside if he can fit up at the proper pad level.

        • I thought he did more than just contribute, Chicago.

IIRC, Mayes missed the first two games with an injury, and it wasn’t until he began to play that we showed any real resistance up the middle. I just recall that the difference with him in there was remarkable.

I suspect Mayes is our best Nose, by far. I had been watching him all last year because I got a good look at him in early 2013, and his body-type was exactly what you look for. He’s a workout warrior and looks it. Ripped. He’s 300+ pounds, but has very little fat on him.

Too bad we can’t say that about the others, apparently. I’m a little disappointed just looking at the interior DL on paper. I was hoping for better.

Error having Lorenzo Carter listed as ILB?

Never mind. It has been corrected.

  6. Gurley is below his listed weight, but then there;s the question of how much he exceeded that official weight. Not that he was fat (he was just built). I think being slimmer will be good for him.

    • No, you’re right. He got heavy last year after his ankle injury. Very heavy, for him. And it hurt him. It wasn’t easy to see, as he’s just one of those bodies that carries it so well.

I blame our nutrition people, primarily, who I thought should have been monitoring him closely when he was inactive and couldn’t do anything for a whole month. By the time he began his comeback, it was too late. He was never anymore than 65-70% after that, on or off the field, maybe less off the field, due to his health.

So the added weight was an extra burden, on top of what would have been tough anyway. But Gurley is a Wardaddy, if there ever was one. What we saw the remainder of the year was even more remarkable than many of us know.

Can’t wait to see Gurley at 225, which is about where he should be when the season starts.

Does bigger OLB and smaller ILB mean we will look more like a 4-3? Does the big OL mean we will road grade?

    • We’ll be in a 4-man front most of the time, IMO, because of the Nickel. We were last year as well. I do expect the 4-man front to be different from a technique standpoint, but that remains to be seen.

So we’ll be in a 4-2-5 a lot. I doubt we see a vanilla 4-3, but we’ll see a Safety or Star sneaking up in there a good bit, depending on the call.

As for the OL, I’m not sure what it means. The last time we got big (2011) it was a disaster. Maybe we aren’t quite that big, but it worries me. We don’t move well anyway, even at the lighter weights (Pyke is probably the only one), so I don’t know what’s going on.

We’ll know when they play that Clemson DL, which will likely be the best they face all year. Until then, we’ll just have to worry about it, and hope they know what they’re doing.

I’ve found that in college like in high school the heights and weights are not always accurate. Theus would seem to be a bit big. I hope he has perfected his holding techniques since the SEC refs seem to let the boys play.

+1. I never know what to make of these numbers. They’re never accurate.

That’s always been true, 69, since I can remember. But it seems to have changed in the last year or two at Georgia, and we are now giving more accurate weights. For example, two weeks ago Gurley said he was 226.

      • P.S. – Don’t mean to imply that we can trust these weights, just that some are apparently accurate, which is a change from the past, when they were rarely so.

Same with heights, BTW. They’re as off as ever. 40-times are better than they’ve ever been, but still not dependable, and usually on the faster side. But they’re a long way from being ridiculous, now, as they were up until a few years ago.

Here’s what I didn’t see: “special teams coordinator” next to any coach’s name. But to my immense relief, at least on the Georgiadogs.com website John Lilly is listed as “Tight Ends Coach/Offensive Special Teams Coordinator” and Mike Ekeler as “Inside Linebackers Coach/Defensive Special Teams Coordinator.” That’s something, anyway!
