First, McKenzie, the 5-foot-7 receiver-returner from south Florida. During Tuesday’s practice McKenzie caused a stir with a move he made: He caught a pass in the flat, then made a couple guy’s miss, according to quarterback Hutson Mason.
“It was real nice. It was smooth,” Mason said.
The reaction by defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt made Mason chuckle.
“Coach Pruitt goes: ‘Oh my God!'” Mason said, imitating the coach. “With that redneck twang: ‘Oh my God!’ It was pretty funny. But yeah, (McKenzie) is one of those guys you just throw him the ball and kind of let him do his own thing.”
I’m not sure I’m gonna be able to take much more of this.

Based on what I’ve read in that article and others recently, I’m even more impressed with Wynn than McKenzie. It seems like a young skill player makes a lot of waves in camp every year, only to mostly disappear when the real games start. The same fate may await Wynn, but the prospect of a freshman being good enough to play on the offensive line is really a nice thought, huh? IF he earns significant playing time as a freshman, it seems as though it will be because of his talent and effort, and not because of desperate need. When was the last time a true freshman offensive lineman earned playing time that way at UGA?

IDK, if it’s by talent and not need. Maybe Boling? But then, IIRC, we were in bad need, as we usually are.
I’m just happy to have a freshman OL who can PLAY. Those are the kind of guys we’ve been needing, yet haven’t seen much of.
After watching those 3 snaps of his from yesterday, IDK how we can keep Wynn off the field. IDK when, but at some point this year, he will play.

Um…I know that. But I think that was more out of necessity than because he took the job from an upperclassman who was at least serviceable. Am I wrong about that?
Maybe my point wasn’t clear. I’m not saying Theus wasn’t a talented freshman. He was. But my excitement at the thought of Wynn playing is as much about the notion that UGA doesn’t need him to play as it is about the possibility that he may be good enough to play. I think they have five linemen who could do a serviceable job without him. I’m not sure that was the case in 2012.

Was Theus a desperation move? Gates and Beard were available at tackle. I thought he earned his position fair and square.

I think so. But neither Gates nor Beard were Tackles. So we just didn’t have any.
Gates recently signed a free-agent contract with the Bucs (hope he makes it). But to get an idea of what I mean, and why our OL has been substandard, here’s one recent NFL analysis of Gates (and I must say it looks dead-on to me).
So that is the scoop on our best OL last year, and should tell us something about where our OL has been. Many of us wondered about Theus, seeing he couldn’t beat out Gates, and we hope he is a better player this year. Anyway, those of us who worry about the OL have good reason, though I do feel better about our chances this year than most years.
We’ve been talking about how our OL eval and recruiting has to be picked up in a big way, and how there are a few signs that it has. The showing out of Isiah Wynn is another sign. Another good sign.

Bucs drafted him as a guard. If as you say he isn’t a tackle that will be of some help to him. If a guard playing out of position displaces a 5 star tackle that doesn’t bode well.

I agree with Ivey on this one. Since Theus is a tackle, I think they did need him to play in 2012. For me to think otherwise, I would have to think UGA had two good serviceable tackles ahead of him. And in my decidedly non-expert opinion, Gates and Beard don’t fit that definition. On the other hand, I think they could probably cobble together two serviceable guards ahead of Wynn.

Which, like Dawg19, I believe they all lead back to Thomas Brown. He has been posting garbage in great length on his “blog”, most of which is a more painful read than the ticker on c-span. The worst/greatest part of all, is he “likes” his own posts, and he is the absolutely only one. Me and several others have called him out on it, to much delight.
