They matched up well against us. A playbook made to exploit the holes in zone defense, an o-line good enough to slow down the pass rush, and the home field advantage.
After all that, we had our chances, and still lost. By inches. Road games are tough. But we got a lotta season left. I’m not ready to quit on this team just yet.

I’m not quitting on them because I am an alumni and am getting used to not winning Championships after all I graduated in 1969 so from 1982 until 2002 we couldn’t buy an SEC. This year is no different.

We got beat on both sides of the line of scrimmage tonight and that does not bode well for our future games. Clemson obviously sucks really bad.

It’s not the players 69, it’s the coaches, particularly CMR. Worst end-of-game coach in the business. A complete dope about clock management and winning close games. Reads football books and spouts nonsense from them to explain why he made the decisions that caused his team to lose. Bobo’s no better. He learned from CMR.

Clock management really doesn’t matter much if your defense can’t get the ball back for your offense, which ours couldn’t. Personally, I don’t much care whether the Cocks had to take two knees, or three.

I don’t have much Kool-aid to puke up as I chose not to drink much over the summer. I really didn’t see how this team could get better after losing the best QB to ever wear the silver britches.
But we’ve got a good team. They can accomplish things. It doesn’t matter how we play in September… it matters how we play in November. And maybe, just maybe, in December, then January.

Todd Gurley averaged 6.55 YPC, Chubb 8, and Hicks 10. I don’t think our QB ever got sacked and went 16/22 with 2 TDs. I don’t think the O Line did that badly. It’s how Bobo calls plays man. He just kills me.

Agreed. Did we call play action last night? If so, I guess I missed it and and first and goal on their 4 after the pick was a great time to call it, given that the entire Western Hemisphere was focused on our running back, including the SC defense. Cheeze…….seems so obvious.

Huh? Gurley had several carries where he had someone either on him or directly infront of him (unblocked or crappily blocked) and did what makes Gurley the best damn back in country. Hell the 3rd down play to get within 3 was 150% Gurley. There was also a 2nd down play where Gurley had 3 defenders in front of him 2 yards behind scrimmage, but made all 3 of them miss and gained 8 or 9 yards.
I will admit that the line had good blocks, but their play is exactly as the senator calls it, which is sporatic. They will be lights out on one play, then the next look like all are true freshman in their first start.

As bad as the Georgia D played all game, they still came up with the play to win the game–the INT that gave the O possession of the ball at the opponent’s 4 yard line with 6 minutes to play. What do you do in that situation? Anyone? Beuller? Why, you run the ball with your best back. If he scores you take the lead. If the other team tackles him, clock runs off more time, and you do it again, until you score or run out of downs.

Sorry but I saw a different game. 35 points , 1 called back, & 2 missed FGs. The offense , CMR, & Bobo Did OK, not great, but OK, in my opinion.
ECU held them to 33 & TA&m held them to 21. We gave up an easy 38..
I certainly could not say the same about the Defense,(coaches or players)..They did bot do Okay.

Georgia hasn’t had a defense in so long many Georgia fans expect very little of it. That’s why you get so much pissing and moaning about playcalling in 38-35 losses. If we weren’t consistently above average on offense these last ten years we’d have been cellar dwellers. I have hope we’re going to get better on defense. At least we’re breaking in a lot of new players. Pruitt tried a lot of tactics tonight, the problem is he just doesn’t have the Jimmie’s and the Joe’s in the secondary. There is some raw talent but it is going to take some time there.

In every close game there comes a time at or near the end where the coach makes decisions that win or lose the game. Tonight, given everything that happened (bad D, bad calls by the ref, etc) the Georgia D finally came up big with an INT that gave the Dawgs first and goal from the opponent’s 4 yard line near the end of the game. And Bobo/CMR choked. Again. Like they almost always do.

THE BIG PICTURE:
Here’s the good news…SC is going to lose again in the SEC. At Auburn, home to Mizzou, at Florida. They ain’t winning all of those games. So the tiebreaker won’t matter. And if we win out like we did in ’12 after losing to SC, we’ll play in the SECCG for a chance to play in the playoff. So in the grand scheme of things, this loss isn’t too huge, though it does hurt.

I know what you’re saying, but the BIG PICTURE is actually made up of a bunch of individual games that determine the course of a season. And in the big, tight games (today being one) Georgia consistently comes up just a little short. Actually, this is the one area of consistency in Georgia teams–finding new and creative ways to lose.
Yes, we all want to believe that they’ll get it together and, start playing complete games, start stringing them together, pull out some close ones when breaks don’t go their way or even when they’re being outplayed. But after watching Georgia game after game, year after year, that doesn’t seem very likely, does it? A great performance one week (hell, one half), means nothing a week later.
All the analysis leading up to and following games such as today’s can be summed up by simply saying “Same Old Georgia.”

Actually we win our share of close ones. LSU, Tennessee, Florida and Tech were all close wins last year.
Things hurt now but it’s time to brush ourselves off and pay that pain forward to the teams left on our schedule.

What did we expect? Sloppy track. Their OL was as strong as we feared. The crowd was hostile. Gurley got some yards, but they kept him relatively in check. Our defense is still transitioning, and our OL lacks truly dominant players. Mason, even with his commendable stat line, reminded us how great Murray was. Spurrier called yet another great game against us. We have work to do to win the East. Is this a shocker to anybody?

Only thing I could figure was that it was a makeup call for the hold that called back Gurley’s td. How Gurley wasn’t flagged and the UF guy was, was beyond me, the ref was standing right there staring at the whole thing. But again, I didn’t feel bad about it, I chalked it up to being a makeup call.

We all have a list of disappointments a mile long, but hands down the top of my list is Jordan Jenkins and Leonard Floyd, especially in that first half. At some point you have to step up and beat the man lined up across from you a few times and make some plays. It wasn’t even just that they couldn’t generate pressure, but a lot of times it didn’t even look like they were trying that hard. We all had doubts about the secondary, and we all were a little worried about how we would hold up against a power running team, but the one thing we were all pretty comfortable with was the idea that we could pressure the QB, and that just didn’t happen. And those blitzes we attempted with the nickelback in the first half were an absolute waste, got us no additional pressure at all, just left us with one less defender in pass coverage.
Also, Spurrier was a step ahead of Pruitt all night. Figuring we’d be ready to their running game, Spurrier came out throwing. Then figuring Pruitt would adjust to that at halftime, Spurrier came out and pounded the rock in the 2nd half. And outside of one play (the interception), we didn’t have any answers at all. Guess Pruitt isn’t a miracle worker after all. You still gotta have the Jimmies and Joes too.

Was mainly referencing our secondary with the Jimmies and Joes comment. We aren’t very talented there, and it definitely hurt us. When your only option is to play zone because you don’t have the talent to play man, it limits what you can do. Conversely, the opposing playcaller has a much easier time knowing he’s gonna be throwing against a zone pretty much every time. But we certainly have talent in other areas, I’m not saying SC was more talented than us overall.

Your analysis is spot on Rev. We don’t have SEC talent right now at DB. I made the statement during the game that I didn’t understand why SC ever ran the ball with no DB even in the frame of the TV screen until after the receiver caught the ball. Oh, I guess it would be OK to run on 2nd and 1 when the catch didn’t result in a first down–but that’s the only time the Cocks needed to run, though.

Yep Nate Dawg..I agree, i kind of think that it was a crapshoot as to where to place the ball….unfortunately that 1/4″ might have cost us the game, not considering the negated TD run and two missed filed goals, but that was the nail in the coffin.
Personally, I think he dragged his knee about 6″ short of the ref’s spot.

We don’t have a dominant D – no one is surprised. But they got the stop when we needed it. Gave is the ball on the 4 yard line. I don’t like the call but we needed Mason to make a play and he panicked. He could have dropped the pass over the D to Hicks but he panicked. He made some good throws but didn’t look off a receiver all night. He is not a pressure player. 9-3 at best this year.

Just so you know, Arky blew out TT today, Mizzou waxed UCF (not exactly a creme-puff) UT didn’t get blown out by OK and Kentucky is in double OT with FU as I write this–not to mention Auburn. Except for last year and the other 4 times richt outcoached spurrier? Gracious. The sec is full of a bunch of good coaches. Sometimes they beat each other when they play. Richt is 3-2 vs miles and 5-5 vs spurrier at USCe. He’s 2-4 vs saban, is 12-1 vs tech, completely turned around the UT series, and is 8-4 vs Auburn. Oh, we’ve beat Florida 3 straight. We’ve got a GREAT coach. We lost a tough road game. Our defense is broke, but we’ve got a fine DC fixing it.

I’m not in the “Richt is a terrible coach” crowd by any means, but while he is 5-5 vs Spurrier at SC, I’d argue they’ve only been playing with similarly talented rosters for the past 5 years or so, when Spurrier first got there, we consistently had more talent than them. Since they’ve been playing with equal sides, Richt is 1-4. Again, not arguing with the rest of your points, but Spurrier has Richt’s number, it’s hard to argue otherwise. For whatever reason, Spurrier’s teams find a way to win when we play, and we don’t.

The “way” as you term it Rev is decision making at or near the end of the game. Spurrier makes end-of-game decisions that cause his teams to win. Richt makes end-of-game decisions that cause his team to lose. He does a lot of things right with the program but he does a lot of things wrong, too. Clock management is still a problem even after (by his own admission going back years) that is something he needed to improve (remember 2001 Auburn-Georgia)? Bad play selection at the end of close games is also something that has plagued the guy his entire career (just ask FSU fans). Roster management is another issue. Ever wonder why we always are short of bodies in some area–every year it seems? I wish we could just put him in a room somewhere with no phone and let him watch the game on TV, then after the game let him come to the stadium to take credit for the win. The guy is as dumb as a bag of rocks when it comes to game day decision making.

Pruitt is working with talent in the secondary that is clearly deficient especially at corner. I’m willing to give him this year to get a lot of stuff worked out and recruit his guys. Lakatos left him an absolute dumpster fire in the secondary, and then 3 talented guys leave because they were more ME than TEAM.

I fear that when Bobo looks back on his career his biggest regret will be sticking with Richt abd Georgia for so long when they NEVER hired a competent counterpart for the defense in his time here. That and an administration that has been perfectly fine squandering the resources at its disposal including screwing him on pay.

Your point is taken – The DCs in the Bobo era as OC have not pulled their share of the weight. If Bobo wanted more money, he could have used Va Tech to leverage a raise from McGarity. I don’t think he and his wife want to leave Athens. I think he knows he will be the leading candidate for the job when Richt decides to retire.

It was my moments of hilarity every time they put the camera on that sea of rednecks. This was the only pastoral face I saw. Most had jaws agape; staring unbelieving every time Kentucky scored in the last qtr.. I called my wife to enjoy the stupid look on nearly every face – and they had the cameras on them often. Ended up being a jocular evening after the earlier cuss session.

Game brings into focus the concerns going into the season. An inexperienced secondary. First half Spurrier went to his bread and butter passing attack. And his QB had the time to get them…no pressure. How many passes were down the seams. Nearly all of them. Could not penetrate their gaps and too much space on recievers.
Mason. He appears to be very slow on getting the ball out and the speed of his passes. His accuracty hurt a few times. But his play on the first down at the 4 was very bad. But I blame that on his OC.
No doubt Bobo made some very bad calls in this game. 3 kept baling Mason and Bobo out. Thought he would wear out Gurley in the first half. Gurley was virtually every play.
Said first of the week this would be Bobo’s to win or lose. He lost it for us on that series of downs at the 4. That was the ball game there. A 3 down series and Mason pushed it back and lost a down. Trying to figure out what in the freaking hell Bobo was thinking. Four downs and 4 yards. Pound it in with your line and backs. Burn the clock in the process. If not in you tie. but you scored 7 you are up by 4.
Then you have pressure on Thompson to execute a passing attack in the rain.
Just freaking dumb ass play calling by Bobo.

Play calling lost this game. This game was going to be tight. Play calling at the right time is crucial. Why risk passing the ball on first down on a roll out or play action. Just pound the damn ball with your backs.
For me Bobo does not trust his players to execute at times. He thinks he has to win the game. At the 4 run and burn some clock on the road. Force them to pass the ball, David is banged up. Just had a pick. Had one earlier but there was holding. 2 in a game puts doubt in a QBs mind. Does not get the ball out.
I just wish and I have said this for awhile. Find another OC CMR, Gurley goes down this offense is toast. He was the total show for the Dawgs today on offense. Bobo’s game plan…run Gurley, run him often, wear him out in this game, put your best TB on KOs, just burn him out.
Bobo…find a damn offense and a play book.
Some series just stick with alums. That series at the 4 will live in history.

Curious when Dawgs will find some wide-outs to stretch the field vertically and horizonatlly. Waiting to see if Mason has deep ball potential. i do not think he does. For me the passing game is substandard. Too slow. Mason just does not get the ball out quick enough.

Yet again we will see top flight talent exit this program with nothin to show for it. It amazes me that so many fans are willing to stick their heads in the sand. We have seen top flight talent leave this program. We have seen DC’s leave this program. We have seen OL coaches leave this program. We have seen a overhaul of the strength and conditioning program. We have seen DL coaches leave this program. We have seen secondary coaches leave this program. And it all stays the same. Richt is the constant. He will not be fired this season after 3-4 losses. I realize that. I also realize that this program will continue to be average until he is gone. That much has been proven true since 2006. I know…we were robed in 2007. We were 5 yards away in 2012. Injuries ruined 2013. There will away a be an excuse.

That loss falls on the shoulders of Bobo. 1st and goal from the 6 and the paly call is hand off to Gurley 4 times, not some bs pass call that results in intentional grounding! We gave that game away. Morgan should have never benn on the field. Shame on us. Shame on more boneheaded Bobo play calling. Why Mike Bobo is still calling plays is beyond me. He is not an offensive coordinator at ths level. That was quite possibly the worst loss in the last 30 years.

I agree. The fact that Bobo called for Mason to intentionally ground the ball was just stupid. Personally, I would have called for the play where Gurley runs right up the middle behind our dominant offensive line and gets stopped for no gain, like he did twice on the prior possession. This is such a classic Georgia loss in every sense. In almost every area, we played both well and terrible at different times, which makes it impossible for a clear consensus on the problem and everyone arguing thinks they are 100% right.
Whether you hate Bobo or love Bobo, you have evidence for your case.
If you think our D sucks or has potential, you have evidence for your case.
If you think our team is grossly underperforming again, or still has “all our goals ahead of us”, you have evidence for your case.
The result of this will be fans here and elsewhere slamming their heads together and feeling quite deeply that everyone else is ignoring the facts and just being blind.
Very few people are able to understand a nuanced opinion, which is a shame, because most situations are complicated and a nuanced opinion is most appropriate.
Here is my attempt at a nuanced opinion:
Bobo is 80% of an excellent OC. He is brilliant in many ways. He coaches people well during the week. They clearly learn a lot in their 3-4 years at Georgia, because they enter the pros and do great. He puts up points. He generates yards. We even keep landing good recruits.
But that last 20% seems to really elude him. It eludes him for a variety of reasons. 2 of the big ones imho:
He seems to feel like he needs to always outsmart the other coach or always trick them into playing pass when he calls a run or playing run when he calls a pass. If a situation obviously calls for a certain type of play, he seems to absolutely refuse to do that because he thinks he MUST trick the other guy. Sometimes the obvious play is obvious because it is literally the BEST PLAY in that situation.
1st and goal on the 4 with the best RB in the nation is a time you give your superstar the rock and win or lose on that.
A trick can fail for a million reasons. Superstars seem to have a way to make things happen. But they can’t do that if you don’t give them the ball.

We broke their back with that drive. TENN began that year ranked #3 in the nation.
After that humiliating, back breaking drive, TENN went on to lose 4 of their next 5 games, lost to Vandy for the first time in 23 years, and failed to be bowl eligible for the first time since 1988, and it was Fulmer’s worst season ever.
There was no trickery. Sometimes trickery isn’t needed.
I am not saying 3 runs by TG score a TD and win the game. But I am saying it seems like Bobo thinks he always has to outsmart/trick the other guy, and avoids the “obvious” play even when it is by far the best play.
That’s why he is both an excellent and a miserable OC at the same time.

Thomas Brown was a lot of fun to watch. I miss that kid. Little dude who could move the pile. Huge heart and a great teammate.
In his senior year, Moreno emerged and stole his spotlight. No one was happier for Moreno than Thomas Brown. When Moreno would score, #20 was the first one he’d find in the sideline.

That’s right. We ran Thomas Brown every single play. Tenn knew what was coming every time. They just couldn’t stop it. We never even faced a 3rd down.
Bobo became OC the following season. We’ve never quite been the same since. That’s not all Bobo’s fault of course. Our defense has been a tumultuous disaster since we lost BVG. But on the offensive side, we’ve definitely had huge problems at the biggest, most critical times. That’s something Bobo has had trouble growing beyond.

This will be a long one, so bear with me.
I won’t say you’re all wrong, but I can’t agree with your conclusion. You’re right that Bobo’s biggest flaw is a maddening need to outsmart the opposition. When this doesn’t work, we say he’s being cute, and we understandably get a bit frustrated.
But there’s a flip side to that coin, and that flip side is moments of absolute brilliance. Go back and watch our first TD against Clemson. Todd Gurley goes in untouched from 12 yards out, because we loaded up on blockers on the left side and drew away all the secondary to the right with the way we lined up. That was a beautiful playcall. Sure it was a handoff to Gurley, but any of our tailbacks could have run that one in. It was easy.
I remember another big moment, back in the 2011 game against LSU. Malcom Mitchell drops a walk-in touchdown. We didn’t get the score because of that drop, but there was our best receiver, running wide open with nobody to stop him getting the points but himself. Our BEST RECEIVER. And that was a damn good secondary on LSU. How did he get so open? I guarantee you that John Chavis was just as confused.
And I remember what things were like before Bobo got promoted. Points were hard to come by in those days. That 2005 Tennessee team was ranked #3 preseason but it wasn’t Mark Richt’s playcalling that broke their backs. Tennessee lost those games because they just weren’t all that good. Their QB competition was between Erik Ainge, whom we now know was popping pills, and Rick Clausen, who was by far the least talented of a questionably talented family of QBs. Mason did not look good last night, but that’s how Rick Clausen looked every game, even the ones he won.
So no, Bobo’s not perfect. And he’ll make mistakes, and we’ll get frustrated, and we’ll wonder what might have happened if the playcall was different. He’s not the absolute best there is at OC and there will probably always be somebody better out there on any given Saturday. However, and I really believe this, you can count those better OCs on one hand, and they won’t be the same guys every week.
Bobo is a very good one. He loves this team and his is so loyal that he’s stayed even though OC salaries have skyrocketed in the last few years and he could get a huge raise just by taking his inconsistency somewhere else. That’s worth points in my book.

+1 – good stuff here – Bobo is a good game planner, excellent QB coach, and outstanding recruiter. Sometimes he can be inconsistent as a play-caller.
35 should have been good enough to win last night. I guarantee that Pruitt didn’t sleep much if at all last night. We have a talent deficiency in the back end of the defense that isn’t going to be fixed this year. We can only hope to find enough to minimize it.

As to time, I had more than usual this weekend with the ladies in my family out of the house.
As to passion, I apply that to everything I do. I like to think of myself as ‘intense’ but I’ve also been described as ‘high-strung.’ If I were a horse, they’d say I was ‘hot-blooded’ or ‘spirited.’
But you’re wrong about our coaches. They are more upset about this loss than anybody.

Usually I love reading this blog and the posts of the readers but I have to say I don’t get all the venom directed at the coaches for this loss, especially Richt and Bobo. You go into a hostile environment against an all time great coach and battle the entire game on offense. You score 35, have a TD run called back on a bogus holding call and two missed field goals by the league record holding kicker. Your offense did enough to win the game. Would running Gurley on first and goal have been better? In hindsight we are all brilliant. What would the response have been if SC stuffed Gurley three times in a row? How much howling would there be about Bobo “refusing to throw the damn ball when SC stacked the box”? Trust me, I’ve read those exact complaints on this blog.
Given that our D gave up 38, never covered the middle of the field, and never figured out that Spurrier was running the ball left every running play I think the offense is not to blame for this one, even with the goal line situation. And I don’t blame Pruitt entirely either. These young guys have a lot to learn about playing SEC defense. If this weren’t the second game of the season maybe they play better, but we all knew we would get everything SC had to offer and we still nearly won.
As for the future, I still think we have as good a shot as anyone, but we better watch out for EVERY SEC team on the schedule. With the exception of Vandy every game is lose able. But every game is also winnable.

“Hindsight” is not the applicable word in this situation. “Foresight” works much better. By-the-book, statistically-relevant playcalling dictated “Gurley, Gurley, and more Gurley”. Even granma knew this, and she resents being considered a Sunday-morning-quarterback when she was calling Gurley’s #3 from the outset. After all, the man averages 9.4 yards per carry. She woulda have bet granpa’s pension that #3 would have averaged 1.33333 yards over the next three opportunities.

We had our chances despite some horrible calls. Our secondary is still a work in progress and our pass rush needs to do a better job of getting pressure. The new concern that emerged for me is Mason’s arm. All of his passes seemed to float a little too long. It seemed to me that he was trying to compensate for a lack of zip by leading the receivers more which led to several dropped balls on good reads and several misses. When the ball was caught, due to the time it took for the pass to get there, there was generally no separation from the defender and no chance for the receiver to escape. Mason fits the game-manager mold whose primary concerns are not turning the ball over and completing the short to mid-range pass in necessary passing situations. We should not expect more. It’s not a bad combination given our RB stable and I think Mason did a good job, but has a clear ceiling. That being said the offense scoring 35 puts this squarely on the defense. If we are going to win out, the defense has to improve, not the offense.

All well reasoned arguments but the fact remains, we lost. We lost to the one coach in the SEC that literally owns us. He is now tied with Vince with 201 wins. I say we pull for his ass to win the SEC so he will retire. (sarcasm).
I never doubted that this would be a close game. I never doubted that one phase of our game would breakdown since that always seems to happen. I will even give Morgan a pass on the 44 yard attempt but to choke like Linda Lovelace on a 28 yard kick is just crazy bad.
Enjoy Gurley boys because he’s going to be gone as soon as he can. We are wasting the 2nd best running back in the history of the program and he knows it.
We do things the Georgia Way not the right way or the wrong way but the Georgia Way. Who ever said “to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result is insanity” obviously was not a Georgia fan.

The identity of an SEC team must be run 1st to win the SEC. Georgia isn’t there yet with 2 ex-QBs running the show in Richt & Bobo, if you can’t call 3 run plays with Gurley, Hicks, Chubb, and Michel, maybe never will be, probably was the best rb corp Richt will ever coach and he blew it.
Afrer the kickcker shaned the 44 yarder, and lost his confidence, you come back to him with the game on the line? Poor decision making.
If you’ll remember, look up how AM did last year without his wr’s vs Vandy, a LOT worse than Mason did. And the grounding call was a bad call, I believe the ref didn’t see it bounce off the dl, and judged it on spot of where the ball landed, but it was thrown correctly. a bad call. And it was raining. And it was in a stadium where Spurrier has won 19 of the last 20. 95% of team loses in Columbia.
On defense, Georgia rushed 4, so Spurrier kept 6 in to block, and torched em. Very few blitzes, almost no pressure on the Qb. On offense, got to stay more balanced, Hutson can throw, trust him let it rip, try for 50.50 run/pass balance.

This was the difference in the game. Defense forced 2 turnovers, deep in SC territory, and you come out with a field goal? Missed opportunities.

Grounding was the correct call. All he had to do was throw it out of bounds, into the stands if he had to. You can’t throw it at a rushing dl. Hard to believe that Mason didn’t know that. Shouldn’t we be thinking about getting some snaps for next year’s QB corps pretty soon? I hate to go through this all over again.

As bad as the defense looked all game, they put Ga in a position to win the game. With all the rule changes in favor of the offense, that has what the game has evolved into. You have to capitalize on your opportunities when they are presented. Unfortunately, Richt’s teams stumble more often than not, when opportunity presents itself. Does anyone remember the 2012 SEC championship?

Mason sure played better against South Carolina in Columbia than AM ever did. AM never handled that pressure well, never even threw a td in Columbia. Mason handled it well.
I think AM went 0-9 in his 1st 9 games vs ranked teams, hard to imagine Mason doing worse than that.
