It seems Frank Crumley succeeded Damon Evans in more than one way.
Frank Crumley, who served as executive associate athletic director for finance and business, stepped down on Sept. 16 while UGA’s Equal Opportunity Office was looking into a relationship he had with a female athletic association employee who reported to him, according to documents obtained Thursday by the Athens Banner-Herald under an open records request.
Crumley, 50, is divorced. The married female who emails indicate Crumley was having an affair with worked in a department in athletics since September 2012.
She received a promotion March 24, 2013, and a raise from $53,000 annually to $60,950. She received a 4 percent raise to $63,388 on July 1, 2014.
The EOO investigator told Crumley the university was concerned the woman got a promotion “because others had more experience than her,” and there was no search for the position. A person in human resources raised questions about the appointment because she did not meet minimum qualifications, according to notes.
The affair isn’t the telling tale here. It’s Crumley believing he could get away with giving her a promotion she wasn’t qualified for and the raise associated with it. When you hear people speak dismissively about how Butts-Mehre operates, that’s the mindset they’re talking about.

Well, when you have a liquor-peddling brawler who is shacking up with a national title winning coach as the string puller for your athletic department, what would you expect?
That we don’t have anyone wealthier or with more character to lead our a.d. than that man is a real indictment on the university and the state.

Yeah it’s the same thing except that Yoculan seems to have earned every penny she was paid. In fact for all we know we got a discount on a championship coach. Not condoning extramarital relations but it’s over now and it wasn’t the same as paying your mistress with employer money, which would be wrong even if all the parties were single.

It certainly speaks volumes to the level of detail that Crumley felt his action were being overseen. That is pretty serious flaunting of the system. Particularly if the emails referenced were sent using UGA assets / email accounts. I mean, gmail is free for godssakes.

I might be mistaken, but I don’t think he was suggesting the presence of cronyism with that statement as much as blatant evidence that one of the premier athletic departments in the country is run by people that, at best, have questionable decision making skills.
Is cronyism present? Absolutely, but the athletic department doesn’t have a monopoly on it.

I just need a little more explanation or context to tie together how this rather foolish man’s actions are representative of a much larger culture and indictment of Butts-Mehere. We have a strict drug and behavior policy that doesn’t let players get away with things, despite it’s arguable role in putting us at a strategic disadvantage versus our peers. I’m not trying to be difficult or anything else, I’m just honestly not sure I follow the broader snipe at the athletic association based on this. What are they getting away with or how does this relate to their broader operations?

I guess I’m still just confused on what is being implied here with “people speak dismissively about how about the way Butts Mehre operates.” What is that referring to? Most of the conversation on how B-M operates, at least from what I follow on this blog, seems to be focused on practice facility, being too tight with spending a large reserve, scheduling, decisions over when/who to hire and fire. So, how does this guy’s affair and promotion shenanigans tie to that? Or is there something I am missing here? Honest question, not trying to defend B-M or poke, I just don’t quite understand the connection and criticism.

I just wasn’t sure initially quite how the Senator was connecting this to B-M at large based on the initial post, since I didn’t initially tie this incident as closely to some of the things most people discuss with relation to what B-M does (budget, scheduling, facilities, discipline, etc). This incident initially felt to me more like an indictment of this guy than the org. And I’d say it’s still somewhat uncertain how far that attitude goes at B-M for any of us who don’t work there and who exactly is arrogant or using poor judgment (I reckon some there are like this guy and some aren’t). I know a couple of the folks over there (lifelong Athenian) who I think are perfectly decent and good at their jobs and have always been professional with me. But clearly there are some bad apples too and can’t argue with that. Our last AD was one. So I’d argue, like with most organizations, it’s a case of some good, some bad over at B-M. But I understood what the Senator was getting at from his response about concerns over judgment in leadership from this, think it’s a valid point and agree and didn’t see any need to reply in a snarky way or keep poking about it.

How about ignoring stealing and immorality? Giving one’s mistress a raise (make it two..and a promotion) at the expense of the University, the A Dept., the kids who play sports, the kids who pay fees and the people of the State of Georgia in general, is pretty nasty. The “oversight” was there, but it was late and probably reluctant.. It’s not good.

The UGAAA is the ultimate ole boys club and has been for as long as my 67 years can remember. Dooley hired his guys for life. We have more old former coaches employed by UGAAA than Saban has consultants. Like any good bureaucracy in a governmental agency it’s first priority is to grow it’s payroll. The more underling the higher the pay grade. Now Evans was a perfect example of the leader who felt bullet proof. Why else would he risk all for a little strange. This current guy is even dumber. Having seen what happened to Evans he apparently thinks he is not only bullet proof but invisible as well. I tell you the late Robin William’s line stated it best. “God gave man two heads one for thinking and one for fing but he only gave him enough blood to use one.” Both these guys let the little head do their thinking. The AD should have known what was going on and “nipped it in the bud.”
