Vanderbilt: first key, revisited

Patton Robinette ain’t playing on Saturday.

Robinette did not attend practice on Wednesday while he recovers from a concussion suffered in a Sept. 20 loss to South Carolina. On Tuesday, Mason said Robinette was “still doubtful,” but he confirmed Wednesday night that he will not play.

“Patton is out. He is out,” said Mason following practice.

Enter Wade Freebeck, who may have been ineffective against Kentucky (8-of-25 passing for 85 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions), but isn’t nervous about playing Georgia.

“No, I’m not nervous. But I wasn’t nervous the first time either,” Freebeck said. “I guess there were a little bit of nerves leading up to it. But at the end of the day, you’re still putting on cleats and playing football with good guys. I got 10 guys that got my back through whatever, so there’s nothing to be nervous about.”

Let’s see how he feels after a few bouts with Georgia’s pass rush.

Spotty Georgia special teams coverage, dangerous Vandy return man, and a freshman Vandy QB? Morgan should just kick for touchbacks. Who wants to bet that doesn’t happen?

Dawgs are big favorites, strong running game and Vandy flat out stinks so I’m predicting Dawgs win 42-38 with a goal line stand in the last 30 seconds of the 4th quarter

Just need to get a 2 score lead and get some reps in for Mason in the deep passing game.

Senator, Leonard Floyd hack your website. Over the last 3 games we’ve heard a bit too much about our embarrassment of riches at OLB and not enough about an actual 4-man pass rush. We had to gamble quite a bit to pressure Vol QBs. Hopefully #84 will make more plays (setting the edge on runs as well) or at least occupy enough blockers to free up others to do so.

Assume much of the pessimism is just gallows humor and sarcasm, Dawgs roll this pathetic Vandy team. We will continue our struggles afterwards but this will be a romp. Many will enjoy the spectacle of us hammering Vandy, some cannot enjoy anything in life and will be frustrated they have to wait a week to continue their bashing. Good thing we won’t need FGs tomorrow with the gusty winds predicted. Hope for no injuries and that we get a chance to work on the passing game with our new receivers, HM, and backups. Let TG and Chubb get 200+ then bring in Douglas to close it out. Fun day for sure, then we can begin to fret and argue all over again. This isn’t the time for it. Everyone unite behind a Dawg team that needs, and deserves, better support than they have been getting.

We have the most “Lary Munson” fan base in the world. I just don’t see this being close. 45-10. With multiple post game complaints about play calling for an O averaging 40 a game. Some asking why HM did not play all game to get more game reps on passing, some complaining about the back up QBs not getting enough reps, and or course the number of carries TG gets at various points in the game. Unless every play call is a TD then Bobo is an idiot. And if Vandy makes one drive Pruitt is too. It’s like going to a pro game and hearing the fans cheer on first down plays and the next play booing because of an incomplete pass. Schizophrenic. Mind you none of these experts will have played the college game, coached in college, or attended any practice or meeting with the team but knows everything and our coaches are dumb.
    Sigh.

    • Sorry? I wish Georgia football hadn’t made me somewhat cynical or maybe untrusting and that I could have selective memory.

I also agree that it shouldn’t be close but….

Exactly. If you might think certain Georgia fans are particularly wary about games in which they should win, should win easily, blowing games late in game…then you might ask yourself why. Answer: Because they actually watch Georgia football games.

Also, despite this idea that most Georgia fans are pessimistic, this isn’t the actual national reputation of our fans. If Georgia fans have a negative reputation, it is of the loud, braggart, blow-hard who always thinks that they going to blow out their next opponent….then wants to fire their coach win they don’t….then forgets about it by the next Wednesday, when they brag that they’re going to blow out their next opponent. Repeat.

        • Yeah…I don’t consider myself pessimistic at all. Maybe more balanced and honest about it. I was all rah rah at one time but that’s a sure way to end up like the guy everyone knows…he takes it personally and it’s embarrassing. Win or lose you can bet your ass I’m having a good time. The minute I stop having fun is the minute I stop going to games or caring.

            Thanks, Ivey.
Now, let me return the compliment. More than any other poster, I frequently find myself nodding in agreement to your thoughtful opinions and intelligent observations. I think we’re fairly like-minded in our views about the Dawgs, and it’s always nice to see your well-reasoned and articulated comments, which frequently reflect my own views. Glad you’re on the blog.

I’ll just take a win. By any score. By any amount.

    • Me too.

But I’d also like to see improvement, in terms of playing a solid football game. To me, that’s the next most important thing to winning. We regressed a little last week, and I’d love to get back on that track.

The good thing is, if we do that, it’s likely we’ll roll Vandy. If we play solid and the game is still close in the 4th Quarter, we’ll still win, but Vandy will deserve credit for playing a heckuva game.

But personally, I’m for the blowout. We can get more done team-wise that way. We have enough close games coming up.

Agreed. Don’t think it will be close-probably like 2 years ago.

I am really interested to see how Mitchell and Scott-Wesley look too. Hoping for good speed and ability to separate from dbs.
