Observations from the armchair, Homecoming edition

Two general points to start with:

Georgia flipped the script.  Instead of coming out slowly, especially on defense, and warming up as the game went on, the Dawgs came out and dominated on both sides of the ball to build a 21-point lead before the end of the first quarter.  From there, it seemed like everyone kind of farted around.  Except Todd Gurley, of course.  Vanderbilt is such a bad team, it didn’t matter, but it would be nice to see Georgia maintain its focus throughout a game as it moves to the meat of its conference schedule.

On the other side of the ball, Derek Mason may want to think about dialing back the bravado.  The Commodores, among their faults, are a poorly coached football team.  How poor?  I found myself nodding in agreement with Andre Ware’s criticism at points.  That’s how poor.  The quarterback substitution patterns were mystifying.  And the throw back screen on fourth-and-two that Bowman managed to turn into what will be the easiest pick-six of his life was one of the dumbest calls I’ve seen this season.

Combine the two, and that’s probably how you wind up feeling slightly dissatisfied about a 27-point win.  And now, some bullet points:

  • Maybe instead of substituting quarterbacks for a series, the coaches ought to consider doing it for each half.  For the second straight week, Mason played a solid first half (10-13, 122 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INT), only to completely fall apart in the second half (1-4, 8 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT).  I don’t get it.  Aside from one serious mistake that Vanderbilt fortunately didn’t capitalize on, Mason did a lot of things right in the first two quarters. His two touchdown passes to Conley, in particular, were answers to much of the criticism he took the last week.  That second throw may have been his best of the season.  And then it looked like a totally different person was wearing his jersey after halftime.
  • At this point, it looks like the coaches are sold on getting Ramsey some quality playing time.  Based on what I saw, it’s a good move.  We all knew Ramsey had a live arm, and he showed that again.  What impressed me yesterday was how well he sold play action.  He also did a good job setting up a screen pass.  He’s still a little too amped up and he needs more experience reading defenses, but that’s what playing time is for.  I just hope the coaches pick his spots well.
  • The offensive line did what it’s done all season, played well in spots and not so well in others.  Pass protection was by and large decent, but run blocking was nothing special throughout the middle of the game.
  • I’m at a point now where when I have to say something about Gurley’s performance, I start giggling.  160+ yards and a couple of touchdowns seems almost ho-hum.  He hurdled another defender who tried to go low to chop him down.  Then there was this.  About all that’s left for him to do this season is play safety and return an interception for a touchdown.
  • That being said, was it really necessary for him to carry the ball 25 times against Vanderbilt?  And no carries for Brendan Douglas?
  • Nice to see Malcolm Mitchell’s return.  What’s the story with Scott-Wesley?
  • It looks like somebody got the memo about throwing the ball to Blazevich this week.
  • The defense continues to live and die with the pass rush.  It was dominant in the first quarter when they were pressuring the quarterback.  But the pressure disappeared when Rivers came in and that led to a scoring drive.  Still, overall, they did a good job defending Vanderbilt’s passing attack.  Remember, the last bit of damage, a 75-yard touchdown drive, came late in the fourth quarter after Pruitt began liberally substituting.
  • Another week of not-so-special special teams.  Morgan missed an extra point with what looked like a low trajectory kick.  McKenzie made a high school mistake with one punt return.  Punting was mediocre at best and contributed to Georgia not dominating field position again.  The one shining spot was kickoff coverage, which was truly excellent against a dangerous Darrius Sims.
  • If the holding penalty called on Kublanow was a baseline, then Vanderbilt’s offensive line got away with murder.  I saw several occasions when Drew and Jenkins were being held by offensive linemen.  Other than that, Wagers and his crew really didn’t leave much of a mark on the game.

I know it’s easy to get frustrated with this year’s edition of Georgia football.  What’s both tantalizing and disappointing is that it seems like almost every week there’s a stretch of sustained dominance – the fourth quarter against Clemson, most of the second quarter against Tennessee and yesterday’s first quarter – that isn’t maintained for an entire sixty minutes.  The Georgia team in that spot looks like it can play with anybody; the rest of the time, you can’t help but wonder how it manages to get out of its own way.  Still, Georgia sits 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference, with a chance to take control of its fate in the division this week.  A little more dominance wouldn’t hurt about now.

I think about 10 of those carries were for the Vandy players that were so hi-hum about tackling Gurley during the week.

Ramsey does have a strong arm. I heard he could stand at midfield and throw it into the upper deck. Unfortunately his receiver was in the endzone.

Mason’s coaching is pretty week when even Andres Ware knows you’re a dummy.

I wish Douglas could play more. He deserves it and with Michel out he would be the perfect replacement.

I can only conclude that something is wrong with Douglass, physically, mentally, attitude, etc. Yeah he had a couple fumbles last year, but Chubb already had one we just happened to recover. We’re substituting so much more than normal (QB, WR, OL, all over the defense), I think there’s gotta be something behind it.

Agree that there was ample opportunity to use Douglas..Gurley looked fatugued several times and it would have been a good time to keep Douglas fine tuned for Missouri and Arkansas…TG will need all his energies in those games. Go Dawgs…GATA!!

This team is frustrating to figure out. If we didn’t have Gurley, I’m afraid to ask where we might be. Although, after watching UF, Tenn, A&M, LSU, Alabama, and SC, I really don’t fell as bad. I think they are all frustrating their fan bases too. (Whisper voice)…Auburn looks really good…

Right now we are an average team with a great player in a weak division.

Unlike last year, we have a chance to rise above it and be champions.

C’mon guys. We all know what really lost that game, don’t we? Every sports commentator in the country knows and said so after the game on the air. So let’s not dwell on it any longer, or make excuses that ignore what really happened. It is actually worse to do what you’re doing than it is to talk about the real cause of that loss. Put is behind you and move on.

Bobo is the only person who can stop Todd Gurley. Hopefully he won’t do it again. I’ve noticed Kublanow is following in the Inman model of getting his name called at least once per game.

This is just the beginning of a theory but I think we need an investigation by the Justice Dept. because this is clearly discrimination against red heads. I know Inman’s calls were usually false starts but the two holdings against Kublanow(South Carolina and Vandy) were just total BS. The refs have essentially apologized for the South Carolina call and what happened against Vandy is that the Refs just don’t realize how amazingly strong Brandon is . He can hold off a Vandy D-lineman with a one arm chicken wing move. I know he can’t do that against UF or Alabama but he is actually strong enough to that to Vandy and Tech lineman. So what I’m suggesting is that refs start off not liking UGA and then add in red headed and Jewish and you’ve got some serious potential prejudice. You get beaten like a red-headed stepchild not a blond/brown or knappy-headed step-child. I’m just sayin it’s an anti-ginger conspiracy and Penn Wagers needs to be investigated by the Clark Co Hate Crimes Unit ,the Professional referees Asso.,the SEC and the Justice Department and anyone else we can come up with.

Auburn dominated LSU. Is LSU that bad or is Auburn that good? They looked that good. Kentucky looked better than I’ve ever seen them look, but beatable if we could just play a complete game. I still say that the scumbag Gators have a pretty good D. Mizzou? I can’t figure them out but I’ll bet that if we don’t play a good game they’ll beat us.

Mason threw some great passes and a couple of woeful oh my god passes. Scary. Over the next month, I think we have some problems gentlemen unless our guys can figure out how to play hard for sixty minutes.

      Interesting stat:
Gurley’s YPC in the first half (assume a relatively fresh D) with Mason at QB: 3.33 YPC (9 carries, 30 yards).
With Ramsey at QB: 10.75 YPC (4 carries, 43 yards) plus one catch for 15 yards.

Maybe it’s pure happenstance, maybe it’s not.

        • I watched most of the LSU/Auburn game. The Bayou Bengals have serious QB issues. I don’t understand why the Hat gave Harris his first start on the road in a hostile environment. It was just stupid and may shatter the kid’s confidence. The War Tiglesmen are very good, but the recipe to beat them is to get them behind the chains on 1st down. Marshall is still not a very accomplished passer and doesn’t look comfortable in the pocket. He seems to just throw it in the direction of Coates or Williams in the hope they catch it.

          Like

          • Auburn’s running and passing stats are similar to ours. YPA is sweeter. They are somewhat more balanced in running and throwing. Marshall is the second leading rusher for them. The JC back that transferred in, while no Gurley man, is a serviceable back. They travel to Miss State next week. I wouldn’t be surprised if the winner of that game wins the West. I think we could beat Missouri and Arkansas if we had them at home. I hate the thought of those road trip. Bobo made Pinkel look pretty smart putting Gurley in the wild Dawg to pass.

Bobo made Pinkel use practice time this week against it. While it may never be used the play again, it came off beyond their wildest dream. Now, Bobo can fake the play and ,by knowing how the D responds in Sanford practice and now in practicality during a game, he can use it and Gurley like twin sirens sucking the opposing D dry.

I get the frustration felt about not playing a full 60 minutes. but with two bags injured, and other injury issues, and a heavier slate of games coming up, I think coming up to 21-0 lead and managing the game is pretty sound coaching. The game was never really in doubt. Plus, lots of people got to play. That’s a good thing.

Yeah and the play call that gave Gurley the longest pass of the year probably didn’t help his confidence much either. That was probably the dumbest, most amazing play call of the year.

I hope we don’t call it again. It was basically a play fake without a QB. Gurley took a step and the D-back bit. I thought the pass was a lttle bit of a rainbow, but it was fun. Maybe next time Gurley will pump-fake and then take off for the corner.

    (checks pre-season notes, scratches head…)

Weak secondary but with front 7 that can keep us in games. Uncertain OL, weak at WR and a 1st yr/ 5th yr starter at QB who just needs to manage the O. Some upside with freshman RB’s and a potential playmaker on ST with a renewed coaching focus on that part of the game. All we really have for certain is Todd Gurley, and we’re going to need to ride him as long and hard as we can.

And that’s exactly what we are. The only loss is probably when we didn’t ride Gurley hard enough.

Getting waaaayyyy ahead of myself here, but an interesting thought…UGA wins the East, and it’s because we’re needing Gurley to save at least a few games. Then it’s Tech before the SECCG….why would we not rest Gurley? You either win or loss the SECCG to get in the playoffs, and it’s not like the drop-off at RB is terrible assuming Sony comes back by then full strength.

Regular season won’t be diluted because of the playoffs?

But Arky will keep our D on the field giving us fewer chances to score. Being in LR it just has all the making of that game we decide not to play completely. Agree about the 25 carries and not using the other running backs once we established dominance. Imagine a twisted ankle in the 2nd half just piling it on, the guy is our only hope to finish decently and he won’t be here next season…play Chubb and Douglas more. Mason answered the arm strength questions but the confidence and timing issues remain. He is still our best option and deserves the vast majority of the playing time until we are eliminated from the East race, after that it should be split with allowing Ramsey and Bauta a quarter each.

Our run defense looks softer than I thought we would be, and not just against Vandy. That doesn’t bode well for what is ahead for us. The defense looks better coached and in better positions but we are just not up to even average yet because the DBs just cannot make the plays when the QB gets time. We will have to outscore teams in shootouts if we hope to beat any of the better teams. Fortunately we have a lot of weapons to use when they right buttons are pushed and we mix it up.

I agree here. Georgia has been a mental team for years, and this season is no exception. We play to potential in fits and spurts, never dominating start to finish. That kind of team is not going to survive the gauntlet ahead without a couple losses. Auburn is scary, mizzou is more than capable of beating us and Arkansas and Florida are both trap games given our inconsistency quarter to quarter.

Yes, Auburn is that good. No, LSU is not a sound football team, but Auburn is that good. But worrying about Auburn is far down the road.

It is truly hard to believe Vandy is as bad as they seem to be.

Based on what I have seen the first five weeks of the season, Missouri is gonna be a really tough out…unless, of course, the coaching staff has not shown me everything this team is capable of, which I doubt.

Todd Gurley is a very good running back on a mediocre football team. This is not a formula that will impress the HypeMan voters if you care about that stuff.

Since I elected not to have Andre Ware’s criticism agree with mine,(I did not listen to it.) I can tell you that I saw an offensive line that is getting better every week, and one of the reasons Gurley is doing Gurley things after he gets to the second level of the defense. We are beginning to block the way a good offensive line blocks, not every play, but more than I have seen lately.

Even playing Vandy, sometimes the defense wins.

Missouri has exactly the kind of defense to give our offense a rough day…fast, quick and aggressive. The only bright spot is that they may not be deep enough…may not be.

And before you crank up your TIVO to watch the Missouri-Indiana game, let me offer this thought.

I hope…hope… Indiana exposed some weakness in Missouri’s run defense. I hope that in the time since, Gary Pinkel and his staff have not figured out a way to shore up the weakness Indiana may have exposed.

If Indiana can run the football against Missouri, it seems to me we can run the football against Missouri.

If Todd Gurley and the other ground troops have a good day, we might have a shot.

I think I still no how to hope.

Two average teams, we were on the road, they had their backs to the wall, and we had a TD called back on a phantom call as well as missed two FGs. All that said, we are a better team but the better team doesn’t always win. I don’t think it will end up mattering, I see us losing a few more to teams that are better than us, or equal. I know we all want to believe our ranking and hope we find a way to survive to get a shot at the SEC title but we are not championship quality yet. Our D will have to grow up a lot in the next few games for us to even deserve a shot. In the meantime, let’s hope that the football gods smile on us for a change, we deserve a few breaks.

    Bah! Enough of this nay-saying.
Georgia will go to Missouri very focused.
The offensive line will know that if they give Gurley some holes, he will wear Missouri down. Chubb and Douglas will continue the pounding when Todd is resting. The play fake will work great at least a few times.
There will be blitz packages to force Mizzou to get rid of it quickly.
The run defense will be enough.
We will see more consistency in the pass defense, although it is the obvious weakest link on the team.
    Special teams will be sharp.
This team will improve weekly and will be ready to play in every game.
Instead of looking at Georgia’s challenges, look at Missouri’s…..They have to find a way to stop Gurley. Good luck with that. Pull those backs in close and enjoy the play fake or (it’s coming) deep ball.
Georgia gave Missouri something to think about yesterday, even as they toyed with Vandy.
I’m happy believing all of this. It may even be true.

Dawgs run Gurley for a negligible gain and it’s “Come on Bobo, let’s work on the passing game.” Or through an incompletion and it’s “Come on Bobo, just run Gurley.” And the last drive before the half and all the fans whining about not calling a time out with 35 plus seconds on the clock…. Dude when has Richt EVER not had time to get a field goal team on the field or enough time to throw a last section pass to the endzone? Clock management was PERFECT on that series and the fans around me were having a coronary. We scored with 7 seconds left on 3rd down. It gave Vandy no time on the clock.

Sorry venting cause yesterday aggravated me to no end. Be a Dawg fan. Cheer for our team. Stopping moaning and groaning with EVERY play.

Our team has issues. Our fans have WAYYYYY more.

Amen. +1 million. We have the worst fans. I go to nearly every game home and away and I’m convinced. It’s embarrassing. Thanks for your family’s loyalties!

This just in…nearly every team has issues. Lane’s offense scored 10 in Oxford. We’ve go issues, but we have Todd Gurley, a kid we’ve recruited, developed and utilized.

It’s true, I’ve been in Athens 30 years, two degrees from UGA, and I find the whining and bitching to be unreal. I think winning the natty may be the worst thing that can happen to a school.

        • I’m sure generational differences have a lot to do with this. Those of us old enough to have experienced the 1980’s teams and #34 knew how magical and special it was. Most of that generation see the potential in Richt, in a different way, but also see how the game has changed and how many more challengers there are. The younger generation has got to be frustrated to no end. If UGA could do it before, why not again?! Especially when they see and are told we’re doing it right, but those in the wrong keep getting rewarded. Man, I’d question the whole program too. I don’t have the answer. Institutionally we’re just not going to cut corners. And you have to have OL’ Lady Luck on your side, but unfortunately we’re seeing she’s a cold-hearted bitch who will whore around with the worst. She may never visit us again…just ask Aaron Murray, AJ Green, Knowshon, and now probably Gurley.

It’s hard to be a Bulldog…I think I prefer it that way.

          Sugar I feel you.

I gave up my tickets because the Georgia fans around me were way worse to deal with than losing a game…or winning a game.

It is my fault I let boneheads drive me away, but they are still boneheads.

Georgia fans not only don’t know how to lose with grace and panache, they don’t know how to win either.

Aus says below its tough being a Dawg, I have said that too and it is true.

I know Georgia football history, I saw my first game (holy shit) 69 years ago. Hell, I’ve got Zippy Morocco’s chin strap in a box somewhere.

Georgia has a shot at a national championship once or twice in a decade or two…it has always been that way, it will always be that way.

It will always be that way because, institutionally, that’s how Georgia rolls.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your perspective and your understanding of Georgia football history, this institutional will conflicts with the things that are said on TV and the Web about Georgia football being this or that.

That Kirk Herbstreit, posing as an expert on college football, put Georgia at the top of the playoff list after Georgia beat Clemson is amazingly, incredibly stupid and short-sighted. And a continuing problem for anybody who does not understand Georgia’s place in the football firmament.

But Georgia has Todd Gurley, who is, according to these same folks, the best player in the whole United States.

Here’s a quote from Joel Silberman that is applicable….”the repeated becomes the truth because everyone’s saying it.”

And God help anyone who differs.

Is it hard being a Dawg…you bet your ass it is.

you need to change seats. I did a few years ago and now sit around young DAWG fans who say none of that total BS. There are some good ones.

When they complain that every play is not the perfect play ask them to tell you what you would have us do before every play and when they are exposed as the uncompensated armchairs morons that they are just say”bless your heart” Disclaimer:Make sure you can take them …..because the following will piss them off.

Note for the Senator: I find that reading the comments of yourself followed by the comments of your readers is far more entertaining than reading the other blogs. You have an educated and fair-minded group of commenters along with occasional assholes that keeps me keyed to GTP’s every article. Keep up the good work and also to the commenters keep up the lively and a pro pos replys.

Our depth keeps us with knowledgeable players in the game gaining more experience. Whether you have noticed it or not, the freshmenplayers have stopped committing the slew of mistakes and two players now can be found covering receivers in the end zone most all times.

Having the luxury of always making opposing Ds defend run and pass and trickery permits us to maintain an upper hand in most games to be played.

Mizzou lost 3 big keys to the team in the draft and thru player stupidity, but Pinkel certainly has my vote as a good coach; they will give us fits, however, Indiana has never been more than the Vandy of the Big 10. At some point Mizzou will give, otherwise, if it was last yr’s team they have, the odds would be even.

    It ain’t last year.

Like a number of the commentators above, I’ve been a Dawg since the 70’s. What I miss about the Dawgs under Coach Dooley is that it seemed that at least once a year we would rise up and beat someone that no one thought we’d beat. In 1978 the team was called the Wonderdawgs because we spent a whole season winning games that we weren’t supposed to win.

I don’t mean this as a criticism of Coach Richt but since he became coach it seems like we lose one or more each year that we were supposed to win and we almost never win as an underdog. Granted, we are not an underdog nearly as much under CMR as we were under his two predecessors, but it would be nice to win one occasionally when we aren’t supposed to win it.

If we are going to make it to Atlanta this year this team will have to win as an underdog at some point.

Despite the warts we have, we may be favorites all the way out. Auburn probably picks up a couple losses due to their schedule and comes into Athens a 1-5 point underdog. Now, I’m not sure we’re a double digit favorite again until Charleston Southern.

LImit Gurley to 15 to 18 carries. Absolutely stupid to get him gassed and tired, which, as we all know, when you are most prone to injury. Mark and Bobo need to wake up before it is too late.
Give the ball for 20 to 25 carries to Douglas, Chubb and Marshall
BTW, where the heck IS Keith Marshall? Banished to the inferno? Is he still physically hurt? Or is his confidence hurt. Would also suggest using him as a receiver out the backfield as a confidence building move, so he can run in open space again.
I said pre-season that if Mason could give us 15 to 18 completions for 225 to 250 yards ppt, and no picks, our offense would be in great shape. The element missing is the completion over 15 yards.

Oh and great to see that Bobo figured out we have a tight end. And that play action is good.

FINALLY, this may sound weird but Mason ran a HUNH in high school and was great at it. When he came in for Aaron last year and we ran that offense he looked VERY comfortable and effective. I know, I know, you don’t change an offensive philosophy for one guy but given that a key guy is your QB why not try to run it a bit and see what the results are? Just saying’…….

I don’t think Vanderbilt could play in the ACC. What a terrible football team! worst game ever for me at Athens glad tickets were free! Can’t wait for Missouri game that’s when we find out how good or bad we really are. I really have my doubts about this team. Was it me or did anyone else think the offensive line took the day off?

In Mason’s defense (did I just type that?) he had a few balls dropped that would hve helped alot. I think you’ll see when you go back and watch it Senator. There weren’t a huge amount, but there were some very catchable balls that were dropped. I can think of one Conley dropped and one other I think in the endzone where the WR didn’t finish the route. For what’s it’s worth

  25. Hell…this season had already shown why rankings are meaningless and that there isn’t such a large gap amongst the top 20 or so teams. More talent and good young coaches to go to more programs. Playoffs could not have come at a better time.
