I don’t know if this is gallows humor, but it’ll have to do in a pinch.

It’s a real shame Todd Gurley isn’t also on the roster of Georgia’s baseball team.

C’mon, Senator. We all stepped back from the edge and now it’s your turn.

Has the team landed in Columbia? Any messages getting out? Practice this afternoon?

And the cheerleaders from Ferguson are on the way.

Senator, we’re Georgia. We’d suspend him for both, and ban him from cheering on the basketball team.

    Q. What does Cher’s career have in common with lawyers interested in fighting on behalf of a University of Georgia player?

A: They both had to do it Pro-Bono.

Q: What does Todd Gurley have in common with a set of tires?

A: They both got thrown under the bus by the University of Georgia.

LOL! Hilarious. Senator, I asked a question in another thread but I think it got lost in all the comments. How is it that the NCAA can still enforce the signature and likeness limitations after O’bannon? Is it because of the appeal?

When you look at the current baseball roster and last year’s, well, it was cut down by design. Had to know that was coming if you want to play and be on it.
It is interesting to read what is being posted on sites, more so on SB Nation.
Have not checked other SEC sites, but I’m sure they are hammering us.
Think most people are not going to hammer Gurley, but the AD and HC. And that is anger, frustration, and an accumulation of past history and transgressions. I think you have to compile a list of the people who are in this kind of traffic plus agents, and troll them hourly. If the guy who set up Gurley is in metro Atlanta, hunt his ass down and put it on a rail out of town. Make him pay. Just like the bars. Make them a public nuisance and threaten their damn license if there is an issue with a UGA player [male or female].
If Dawgs had a healthy Marshall and Michel, how would this go. Would Gurley had even be approached if Marshall was in the RB mix.

If I’m Gurley and I’m suspended more than, say, 2 games, with UGA losing 1 or more of those games…I’m leaving and getting ready for the NFL. That is, unless various NFL consultants advise against it as it will hurt your draft stock. Otherwise, it makes no sense for him personally to stick around for a few games that don’t really matter at all.

Yep – wouldn’t blame him, or any other college player making the same decision. Why risk his neck for the team or the fans? They aren’t going to be giving him shit if he gets hurt other than well-wishes.

If he does that he is not a team player AJ came back.

I actually thought Gurley might do that after CMR/Bobo blew the Georgia-South Carolina game by getting too cute instead of running Gurley in from the 4 with the winning TD. Why risk getting injured if the coach is going to choke the game away at the end (again)?

Can anyone tell me why the following would not work?

Start a business that allows athletes to borrow NOW against future earnings. The policy would look like:

    (1) Player borrows X dollars, when any NFL contract is signed they must pay back X*premium interest Y.

    (2) If player never signs an NFL contract, they owe 0 dollars.

It’s up to the insurance company to figure out Y that balances risk appropriately for the particular player. For example, Michael Bennett might have to pay back x4 when the contract is signed, Todd Gurley would have to pay back X1.2.

    Problem solved. Right?

    • The NCAA could always just allow players to either accept payment for their play and the use of the likeness (athletes basically become just like everyone else in college and cut out the black market) or to accept a full scholarship and medical benefits upon entering college but be unable to enter the free market as they are now. This would most likely be the simplest solution although I could see how the NCAA would never let that kind of money be directed away from them.

Your scenario would be financially more complicated and require I third party taking on risk (and possibly make a significant profit) but could be accomplished basically without the bending of the NCAA right? Are there any rules against NCAA players taking loans?

This is coming from a undergrad majoring in finance on full scholarship who works full-time using skills I gain from my university daily.

Yes, this is the idea, it would be 100% driven by the profit motive of the insurance company that devises the policies. That’s why I don’t get why it hasn’t been done. These policies represent totally uncorrelated risk (i.e. one player not making the NFL doesn’t mean other players don’t either, in fact it’s the opposite), so there is absolutely money to be made.

Yeah, let’s see. If he had a big loan and was not headed to the NFL because of an injury that healed and he’s back playing again, how would it sound for someone to say “You can wipe this all out if you see to it that the score is within the spread this week.”. Yep, there would be no scenarios beyond your idea of how all parties would act beyond the utopia created in each case.

If you don’t know the chaos created by “loans” that are not from the school, you should read more….a LOT more. Start with basketball and Connie Hawkins. That’s a good primer.

Create company. Have your parents sue company for copy write infringement. Win case. collect damages. Pay athlete.

Or just create a minor league baseball team in athens to play players.

Saw a little segment from the wise and sagacious Skip and Steve show. I know they are generally considered ass-clowns, but they both made the point of “why shouldn’t Gurley just call it a season? UGA turned its back on him, so why risk injury when this likely won’t hurt his draft stock?” I think it’s a decent observation. Obviously the details of this investigation are not clear yet and he may yet be vindicated. Deciding to fold the season and focus on the draft would be rash at this point. But Gurley has got to be pissed that the AD and HC are not going to bat for him a la Manziel. This may have been discussed earlier but do y’all think he might be wishing us a fond farewell? I for one would not blame him.

Because those schools’ attorneys requested his assistance.

Mr. Slive is an attorney with key connections and enough of a self-interest to assist in the schools’ efforts to protect their players and the SEC brand.

    • You’re going to the western Columbia? I spent a night there on a cross country trip. Not a bad town. One tip I can offer is that if you need booze you don’t have to look for a liquor store. They sell it in the grocery stores and not in a separate place. You can pay for booze and food etc at the same time.
