“Dunlap declined to say if Wagers would face a reprimand.”

Honestly, would it make any difference to him whether he got one?

  1. I watched that game. Like every one he referees, Penn Wagers insists on being the star of the show. Spent a lot of time lecturing Mullen on the sideline. Damn, the guy makes my skin crawl.

The SEC office in Birmingham, Saban, and Wagers are all sharing a good laugh over that one.

Wagers is consistently terrible. He is bad in every game he officiates and the SEC does nothing about it and never will.

At least this means the SEC won’t be sending him to Little Rock. Oh hell, who am I kidding they wouldn’t think twicw about it.

Yeah, I was scratching my head over this as I watched it play out. Knew it couldn’t be right….if it was, you could run off extra minutes at the end of the game just by repeatedly committing illegal motion penalties. A new play clock, without using another down. Stupid mistake. Nice job, Penn.

I did notice Driskel on his knee holding his helmet, but he looked terrified and stricken. He didn’t get over to the cart in time to say anything to Pittman.

If this is a wide-spread sentiment among the Gator base, we may not even get the sideline entertainment of Muschamp in Jacksonville. (Especially if they blow it against Missouri this weekend.)

      • Kind of in line with what happened at Michigan. The pressure for these guys to win overrides everything, even empathy toward their players. Stress can drain you of character–even if you had some to begin with.

Richt is the antithesis of this. .

It could happen (LSU comes into Hogtown after a 34 point loss to Auburn and then Missouri comes in after a 34 point loss to Georgia) Herschel Walker-style #karma for Boom

        • DIF – I always thought u were making a joke @ ‘Hogtown’, but then it was the damn answer to the trivia question during the fla vs lsu game. As I sat in my easy chair – more than slightly buzzed – I said aloud – ‘Hogtown’ as the answer to ‘What is Gainsvilles nickname?’
          Who the hell knew..thanks.

My favorite Penn moment was when he did a bowl game out west a few years ago. After several minutes of confusion trying to figure out what to call on a particular penalty, he finally said something like, “the boy fumbled the ball…”

I remember cringing at him referring to a player as “boy”.

Wagers will resolve the matter by calling an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Mark Richt.

  14. Wagers is just the epitome of all of the problems with SEC officiating. Officials with an attitude and an agenda supervised by good ole boys who will watch over them and let them grind their ax as long as they want.

On the call in question, the clock operator should know the rules of when to run and stop the clock and be able to override the officials on the field when they get the decision wrong.

There was an analysis shown on this blog a few days ago that is damning evidence that Wagers has something against the Dawgs and takes it out on them in games. Pre-2007 end zone stomp Wagers reffed 10 games and the Dawgs were 9-1. Post-2007 end zone stomp Wagers reffed 10 games and the Dawgs were something like 4-6 (I may not have the numbers exactly correct but you get the idea). Even worse, every one of the wins was against a walkover team, meaning that every game Georgia played against a real foe with Wagers refereeing was lost by the Dawgs. For 7 years. This cannot be a coincidence.

    • I don’t think it’s a coincidence either. Just look at that game last where Richt was going off on another ref who was just trying to calm him down and ole Penn runs over just so he can throw the unsportsmanlike flag.

I feel like Penn is one of those guys that wears his douche on his sleeve. I’ll bet if you randomly ran into the guy in street clothes and didn’t know who he was you could tell he was a dickhead before he even opened his mouth.

Don’t be too hard on old Penfield. After all, he’s just carrying on a family tradition.

I was watching a replay of the 1990 Texas-Oklahoma game on the Longwhoren Network (don’t ask, it was a slow day). This was back when it was an OOC game for both of them so they were using (you guessed it) SEC officials. The calls were terrible throughout the game, so much so that the ESPN commentators (I didn’t recognize them) were talking about all the blown calls for both sides. Texas got screwed early, but then the officials rallied and screwed OU enough that Texas won the game. I was embarrassed for them.

I’ve always thought the SEC officials are really bad. They screwed up some games this last week fo’ sho’. The official timeout, when they put 10 seconds back on the clock for LSU to kick the winnining FG against Florida was justified, I though. Florida just wouldn’t get off the pile and was determined to run the clock down. The Mad Hatter, however, was crazy to call a running play with 24 seconds left and zero time outs! LSU actually ran a play, got the field goal unit on the field and kicked the winning field goal in less than half a minute…hmmmmm. (reminiscent of an famous UGA victory over Auburn..one of LM’s great calls). I can see why Boom is pissed off, but it made me so very happy! Same with Auburn’s offensive pass int. call that cost them a long TD….If you go by the letter of the law, it could be called (and was) but it was really the same hand pushing and jockying that goes on with every long pass….and it made me VERY, VERY happy! Auburn is so far overdue to have hail and brimstone fall upon them that I’m worried about living in Lapland…(west Ga…where Georgia laps over into Alabama).
To hear and see (on blogs) ‘Barners crying the blues about how unfair it all is really gladdens my heart.
The SEC refs do determine the outcome of far, far too many games. It’s time to can the whole organization and out-source it to people who can be fair and honest and competent.

  18. I’ve always thought the name Penn Wagers is almost two good to be true. If I’d been lucky enough to never have viewed his work and someone told me to guess who a Penn Wagers was, SEC ref might have been third behind 1800s riverboat gambler or a country singer.

What about that awful pass interference call against TCU on Baylor’s last drive before they kicked the game winning field goal? There so many bad calls like that, and they’re just forgotten except to a few passionate fans. TCU had them stopped and that game should have gone to OT.

Someone enlighten me: is there a limit on the number of times an officiating crew can work a particular team’s games in a season? We had Wagers for Vandy, which went largely without incident. I’d love to think we could be done with him for the year. Now, that would be a bullet dodged.

Don’t think that there is a limit, but if there is, it’s more than one game. The (generally, flag-happy crew of) Hubert Owens has already called two of the six Dawg games this year (SC and Mizzou).

Penn Wagers is an overgrown version of the putzes who called little league baseball when your son played: It’s all about me and my dramatic, decisive call. Now pay me my $30.
