Man, the Todd Gurley thing must have really struck a nerve with Jeff Schultz, who’s written a third column on the matter in less than a week. If his first could be characterized as blame Gurley and the second as the same for the NCAA, this one has more of an “if a tree fell in the forest” philosophical bent to it.
But there’s another part of the equation in the matter of suspended Georgia running back Todd Gurley few are talking about, and it would be foolish to ignore, especially given the NCAA’s recent tendency to stick its finger in the air: Even if Gurley did break rules and even if there’s evidence to support suspending him for up to the rest of the season, would they do that?
Well, the NCAA didn’t in the Newton or Manziel situations, so it’s not like there’s not a precedent for that. But that’s not the real question here. The real question is even if Gurley did break rules and even if there’s evidence to support suspending him for up to the rest of the season, if the NCAA didn’t do that, would Jeff Schultz write another column about it?
No need for the NCAA. We’re going to suspend him ourselves and do our own investigation. Should be finished in about 8 more weeks.

Newspaper writing, even opinion pieces, ought to exhibit an economy with the language. I give Schultz an F- for that lousy sentence.

Honestly, I haven’t read a Jeff Schultz column/blog in 3 years.

And we all owe the Senator a great debt for doing the dirty work.

shultzie used to be a good beat reporter, especially for hockey. but he gave it all up to be a troll.

well, in Schulz’s defense, what else was he going to do? Move to Winnipeg? Ink stained wretches have to eat, too, I guess.

“Before a ruling is made on Gurley,”
And speaking of that, what’s the hold up on the reinstatement? The masochism of suspense is starting to wear off

It’s almost like he is just covering every angle so when it comes out he can say “yeah, I told you so”. His shallow and pedantic columns make Mark Bradley look good. I think he should really just be told to sit in the visitors’s 3rd deck seating, no more press box for home games.

Better question: if Schultz wrote another column, would anyone read it?

Is Chubb or Douglas hurt? Just saw JJ back to RB.

And I guess this means no Gurley, which is what I expected.

Unfortunately that also doesn’t show much optimism for Marshall or Michel coming back soon.

Marshall’s ankle is still bothering him.

Yeah. It’s hard to not feel horrible for KM. Just bad luck. I wonder if they can get a medical redshirt for him if he can’t play at a certain point. It seems like medical science has progressed so much but outside of physical freaks I’ve heard plenty of people that know more than me say that a ligament injury is more than just a year to be back to 100%.

That’s interesting. And a good move, now that I think about it. We’re going to need him, and probably Saturday. I’ve been really worried about this game since Sunday. That makes me feel a little better.

I suggested that might happen in the comments this weekend as was quickly assured by members of the commenteriat it wouldn’t. Point is people trust your eyes and what you know more than what people, especially coaches may say.

Yeah, I think Chubb will be more effective if Green can carry some of the load. It’s not realistic to expect Chubb to carry it 30 times/game, IMO. Not sure Gurley could carry it 38 times the way Chubb did, so Chubb did an unbelievable job.
We know Green’s capable. Maybe not the same as last year, not sure what changes to his body he made this year for defense or his conditioning. But he can help, and we need him. I love Douglas as much as the next guy, but Green brings more to the table.
Between Green and Douglas, we should be able to keep Chubb fairly fresh, or at least get him significant rest. And that should make him more effective.

Eh the fish wrapper has always been trying to stir up crap for cheap hits. Now that they are trying to put anything they can behind a paywall(a tactic that they tried years ago and failed) I’m sure they are pushing controversy and sensational headlines more than usual.

Your initial “turd of a column” description of Schultz’s first piece is one of the best descriptors ever used by you in a blog. It was very apt and should probably go in the Lexicon.

Clicking on AJC ruined my computer with so many ads, links and pop ups. Guy at the computer shop advised me to dump it.

Yeah. I’ve hated the AJC for years as far as their sports editorials but would still go to their website every day just to see what was going on in the state and world. Now between every story being behind a paywall and on top of that it crashing my browser more than any other site I don’t bother anymore.

Why in god’s name would you go to the AJC for world news? I don’t think they even have reporting staff.

What I’m expecting from the NCAA is to drag this out for the rest of the season and then come out and say there’s not enough evidence to support a punishment.

What makes me feel better about this is the lawyer that Gurley has. He is the same fellow that represented Cam and Johnny Football. My gut is that this weekend’s game will be the last that Gurley sits.
