I have avoided any comments sections, or even articles, since saturday. The emotionally-charged stupidity that comes out after games like that is just too much for me.
The next time we crack the top 10, all will be fine. Then the next loss to an inferior opponent, the world will once again be ending. This will continue until Richt gets an NC. Annoys the crap out of me.
Richt may never win an NC. He also could have won 2 or more by now with a bit more luck (a lucky bounce in 2002, 2005, 2007 of 2012 would have done it).
Richt will never dominate like Saban, but he will have us in the discussion every few years, which means decent odds to win one or more eventually. That’s the reality. If fans aren’t content with that, we deserve 10 years of Tennessee-like results if we fire him, and I’ll be happy for the suffering of all you idiots that brought it upon us.
Totally agree, Rick. This whole fandom thing right now seems like a ticking time bomb. People are miserable when we’re winning because they’re waiting for the other shoe to drop, or they’re miserable because we just lost a game. People have completely lost perspective. What joy is derived from such misery?
For what it’s worth, I’m a fan who would normally be on your side here, but that loss Saturday was a real eye opener for me. I think anyone who thinks Richt is going to win a national title at this point is kidding themselves. I don’t even think he’ll win another SEC title.
Ugh. Every team has shitty fans but I get sick of ones that do stuff like that. Especially to Conley. He’s a DGD and has done nothing but put significantly more time than we realize into representing our university as well as anyone possibly could.
I saw some jackass on facebook today try to blame Conley for catching that ball at the end of the SECCG in 2012. I find it hard to keep from going off on idiots like that, but it’s really not worth the trouble.
And anyone that feels the need to tweet a player with negative comments after a loss can go find another team, as far as I’m concerned.
Some people are just too dumb to be helped. Sure enough as soon as Conley doesn’t catch that ball in the SECCG, there wouldn’t have been a Bama player anywhere near him and people would be furious he dropped the game winning TD on purpose. Hard to blame him for doing exactly what he’s trained to do.
And yea, I just let those people go on about their way, if that’s their way of thinking, they aren’t changing their mind just because you apply common sense to the situation.
Chris,
A fan isn’t somebody who attacks his own. Fans hate tech. Fans hate the gators. Fans hate auburn. Fans love their team no matter what. A fan may get disappointed. A fan may get frustrated. A college football fan may not take those frustrations out on the players, ever.
The fair-weathers, the know-it-alls and the little whiny bitches are everywhere to be sure and they tend to hate on their own players and coaches when things are going just as they’d like, but they are not fans.
You guys have said it all. Chris Conley is the epitome of what we should expect in our players. Pisses me off no end that nameless and lets be totally honest…GUTLESS…jerks react to our players like that. No college player deserves this crap and especially not one who has represented our school like Chris has. Don’t blame him for being frustrated.
It is wrong to lash out at the coaches and players after a loss but anyone in any walk of life who chooses to express themselves publicly on social media must learn to accept that such responses come with the territory. I can watch Finebaum and laugh at his callers’ ignorance but my wife hates it. When his callers this week were skewering Richt I turned the TV off because she was blowing a fuse. I told her that’s how you handle things that get under your skin. Darriel from Columbus is the best, or worst, example. If “fans” can devastate a program many were working hard to do just that to UGA this week but it is the world we live in today. Personally I never thought we would make the top 4 even if we beat Florida. Just too many things had to happen. I thought we would top out at 5 or 6 even at 12-1 and an SECC.
Just because someone can say something does not mean they should. People need to grow up and be civilized. Unfortunately I’ll mannered people feel they need to respond to everyone because they can. Sorry Chris had to deal with that. He did not deserve to be treated that way.
Have said it several times before, and this week is the time to say it again, UGA’s players and coaches deserve better fans. Since the availability of the internet, and explosion of other mediums to communicate anonymously, we have become the worst fan base in CFB. I realize this particular incident is an isolated one, perhaps just a handful of fans were involved, but we have the largest, and loudest lunatic fringe in America. Just a miserable group of people.
What other programs aspire to be, our children work tirelessly to tear down. It wasn’t like this in the 60s, 70s, or 80s, but UGA has sunk to it’s lowest level the past 20 years. I will limit that characterization to “electronic media fans” since I don’t actually see this behavior personally, or hear people run our program down in person, so it could be a bunch of TN, FU, and AU fans trying to stir things up with the media, players, and recruits. Whatever “it” is should go the hell away, they aren’t really fans at all, perhaps fanatics or maniacs, but not really fans. A true fan doesn’t tear down what they love.
There’s just a bunch of idiots out there. Every school has them, and I don’t think we have as many as some other big southern football schools, like Alabama and Auburn, for example.
But we have our share. And they give the whole fan base a bad name. I wonder if Richt thinks some of these idiots are representative of a large segment of Georgia’s base. Wouldn’t blame him if he did.
But they aren’t. Most of them never came close to going to school there, and couldn’t have even if somebody offered to pay their way. There are great fans who aren’t alums, but these idiots are simply not representative of the Georgia people.
It’s embarrassing, when one of these rednecks confront Richt like that, in that kind of public forum. It’s OK to criticize and point out things that may not be right, and so on. But do it in a way that’s balanced and still supportive of the program.
And know what the heck you’re talking about, or at least have a good idea. Too nice? What a dumbass. Richt’s personality and demeanor has nothing to do with our difficulties. It is, in point of fact, an asset
Georgia fans are like all other southern fans. The internet is why everything seems worse these days. In the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s there was no anonymous venue for people to spew vile crap.
I agree with you about how the internet has exposed a sleazy side that most of us never saw before, and also that every major program has them(not just southern for sure…Ohio. ND, State Penn, etc., etc.) What I see that is different is the personal, destructive attacks, the number of them, and the tolerance for them. No problem with expressing concerns it is the way, the destructive way it is done, and it is well beyond the usual 5% level on most UGA message boards/blogs. You can want change and not go after DGDs’ on a regular basis, and not do it as total jerk trying to tear off a pound of flesh.
I read other teams’ boards and find these “over the top” attacks to be quickly dismissed as inappropriate by the overwhelming majority, or simply not allowed. Anger and hurt about the disappointing loss on Saturday can evoke bad responses, same with the Gurley situation, but the past month has been a time to stand together and support, not eat our own. Just my opinion, and I really just want us to get back below the 20% level of lunatics as 5% seems unachievable anymore. And that is why I put us at the bottom of the “electronic fans” but don’t think we are below them in public as most all conversation I hear seem reasonable, imo.
People need to get a little perspective on life in general if they are attacking any player over a game, much less one that is such a great representative of UGA. Sad pathetic people.
I really didn’t find fault with his comments and also found them reasonable.
On another note as one commenter pointed out I do think some fans are disgusting. I witnessed some disgusting behavior from my fellow Georgia fans, and these were grown men and women in the high prices seats (I lucked up).
In this “status” driven age that we have the lunacy has gone through the roof. No longer is it enough to be a fan of your team, you also have to denigrate others teams to make yourself feel better. Most of these assholes don’t want a NC for Coach Richt, the kids playing or the university, but rather so they can go to WalMart and buy everything that says “2014 Georgia Bulldogs NC” and crow about it to their coworkers, friends and on Facebook. A lot of these jerk offs are of the Xbox generation who think that because they go. 14-0 every year on NCAA football it should be that easy in real life.
Times like this are when our guys need support the most. I wish there was a way to automatically disassociate certain people from our fanbase. Vote them out or something….like the grown man I saw at the Clemson game barking in the face of a child wearing a Clemson jersey.
I’m truly embarrassed by the behavior of some Georgia “fans” this year. It’s stuff I’ve come to expect from gators and I wish it would go away. Murray’s house and now Chris’ Twitter responses. Rational people don’t do this stuff do they? Please tell me they don’t.
The bottom line is the state of GA is 1 of the top 4 recruiting states in the country. Bammer, Aubarn, Florida, LSU and Tennessee have ALL won national titles over the last 16 years and UGA hasnt even played for one much less won. There is no excuse for getting whopped like UGA did, when you are not only an 11 pt fav but also have everything to play for but that tends to be the trend under CMR. In 2008, UGA was loaded as the preseason #1 and let Bammer embarrass them in the famous Blackout game. I am a firm believer that CMR doesnt express the ability to keep a team focused for a full season. At 3 mil a year, winning should be at the top of his list but it isnt. I think that mindset tends to rub off on his teams. You can give him kudos for kicking out players who dont conform to the GA way, but none of that validates losing games that you should win. He hasnt won a conference title in 12 years, despite being loaded year after year with NFL talent. I think its time for him to put up or shut up.

Nah. A national championship will only change the narrative from “Richt can’t win the big one” to “Richt backed into that championship any way…”
I get where Chris is coming from. But, at least no one egged his house. Yet.
