Please, Gawd, not another blackout.

What is it with some folks?  Gurley’s return isn’t enough to get fired up hosting Auburn?  Georgia needs a little fake juice to put it over the top?

We never really learn.

UPDATE:  Not gonna happen.

Richt is such a spoilsport.

No! I’ve wanted to unearth the black jerseys too, but not for Auburn. We should have saved it until next season and blacked out against Alabama. Bring it back and beat those bastards who ruined it.

We didn’t lose because of our uniform selection. We lost because we were woefully unprepared (insert pic of UGA vs. Fla. 2014)….I wish Richt would make the team wear all pink until they beat the hell out of teams they are supposed to from start to finish! You should have to earn the right to wear the Red and Black! Just my two cents!

  10. Jersey colors never decide the outcome of a game. The players love it. There will be a lot of recruits there and they love it. And dang those jerseys are sweet. We are 1-1 in them. They should be a part of our regular home rotation. And we didn’t lose the Bama blackout because of jerseys and you and everybody else knows that. That game was another in the long line of playing a big game unprepared.

    • Agreed. The black jerseys aren’t magic armor that ensure the wearer a victory each time and just failed us against Alabama. They look great-arguably the best alternate uni in football. Programs every bit as historic as ours-Oklahoma, Nebraska, Ohio State-trot out something new sometimes to impress recruits and it’s not beneath us.

This. Some folks don’t like any uniform but our standard red uniforms, which is fine, but wearing another uniform isn’t necessarily “fake juice.” Maybe it’s just laundry. Laundry that others happen to like.

doesnt our reaction to one bad loss after wearing black shirts say more about the psyche of the fans/program than wearing an alternate jersey once in a while?

Fake juice? It would worry me more if every player and a huge swath of the fan base wanted to see them in black shirts and they backed off because they lost a game wearing them before.

    Like

    • This isn’t about the psyche of the fan base. It’s about the ability of the team to prepare for a big game without needing gimmicks to do so.

If the fans want to wear black Saturday, more power to them. I just want the team to be mentally ready to kick some Tiger ass. And I’d hate to think that they need a jersey color to do so.

      Like

      • I’ve mentioned this before, but I think CRM doesn’t know how to consistently prepare the team mentally. Turning to gimmicks is just another inconsistent tool he uses. So we might as well enjoy it. Man, I can’t wait to see Todd back in black.

Oh and I enjoyed watching that horseshoe fall out of Gus’s arse last night. Hope we get some of that luck next Saturday.

You are assuming that if we wear an alternative uniform it is for the purpose of providing emotional stimulation to the team. It could be that McGarity may want to stimulate the sales of jerseys to generate money to pay for Gurley ‘s lawyer. Being a wise ass about our AD, but I don’t jump to the conclusion that wearing black is to create emotional “juice.” It is common these days for teams to have alternative uniforms for marketing and recruiting purposes.

Why are the black jerseys automatically considered a gimmick? Other teams trot out different jersey colors all the time but if Georgia does it, it’s “fake juice.” Perhaps it’s possible that the team can be fully mentally prepared AND wear the black jerseys? Or maybe the team won’t be prepared at all and it will have absolutely nothing to do with their jersey color.

To me it is pretty simple. If the players want to wear black let them wear black. They are the ones that have been busting their collective asses all season.

I met a few of you at the Clemson game and you know we have been to a ton of games all over the southeast in the last few years on recruiting visits. Those saying that the kids love it are correct, players and recruits. And, considering how much they bust their rear ends all year for the opportunity to play a few months in the Fall, I say if they like it we just need to get into it with them and quit finding stupid stuff to complain about.

The ’07 blackout against the Barn was awesome. The blackout in the Sugar Bowl at the end of that season was most enjoyable, too (as the attached pic will remind everyone). But, rather than making the black jersey and helmet a treat, I wish UGA would make them a regular alternate uni – something the team could wear once or twice a year. They look good, and making them a regular option could erase memories of the ’08 Bama disaster. (Note: I don’t count the hideous unis they wore in the ’09 UF game. I hope BM doused them in gasoline and burned all of them outside the bunker.)

I have never understood this debate, and never will. There is no good reason — unless one of you has access to the locker room and/or coaches offices (?) — to assume that the purpose of the blackout is to get the players motivated. There are plenty of other (good) reasons to do this, as others have already noted: e.g., energy in the stadium, excitement for recruits, etc.

Or it may be as simple as the players themselves wanting to wear black jerseys. You know … because they enjoy it. And God forbid Mark Richt do anything that might encourage his players to have a good time at a football game.

If that 2008 Alabama game had gone even slightly differently — i.e., even just a less embarrassing loss — the fanbase wouldn’t be so uptight about this. Will the media folks be quick to remind us of that game? Sure. But the only way to effectively correct the narrative is to put the fucking jerseys back on and kick someone’s ass — and preferably, a media darling like Auburn.

Think your comments about “fake juice” are absurd! Everyone knows that these players want to play and want to win. The jersey color does not change that one bit. A big night game against auburn in a game that motivation would be needed is a perfect place to bring them back out bc no one in their right mind would say they are doing it for fake juice. They would be doing it bc the fans like it, the players LOVE it, and recruits enjoy it as well. It would be good for this team, this fan base, and this program if people would get over this fake juice stuff and let the kids enjoy the best alternate uniforms in college football!!!

  26. I’ve maintained for a while now that we should simply wear the black jerseys every time we host Auburn. I LOVE the look of the black jerseys, but I’m in the camp that doesn’t like the fake juice aspect of it. So make it a planned thing against AU every time we host. The fans and players get to see/wear them every other year, a few extra jerseys get sold, it becomes a new part of our tradition with AU, no fake juice, etc. I know not every game against the War Tiggers will be a night game, but that’s still the designated game that we would wear them. Just my $.02. 🙂

    Here’s my 2 cents….
I like the black shirts, they look great. Let’s just wear them vs Tech every year and possibly the bowl game. Stop making it such a big deal and make it the norm. Tons of schools across the country use alternate uniforms or have “blackouts”, “gold rush”, “whiteouts”, just to name a few. Heck, if you look at Mizzou’s schedule on their website they already have these games identified before the season starts. Penn State does multiple “whiteouts” each year, what’s the big deal? It may get the players excited, but it can also jack up a fan base. Does it result in a win every time? No. But, it usually achieves the objective of raising the energy level and excitement at the games. What’s wrong with that?

Bring em back, keep em back I say….

I would say basically the same thing. Except I would move the team we use them on to Auburn. That is the team we started them on and we play them every year, so we can wear them every other year for the Auburn home game.

Fake juice was that BS uni that we tried to pull against UF a few years back that looked more like Grambling uniforms than Georgia uniforms. This is juice using a color that is a main feature of our 3 color scheme and it looks damn good. Everyone wants to bitch about how teams like O get recruits by having a new jersey design every damn game, but they like that crap, so appeal to it.

If the players want to wear them, let them wear them. If it gets them a little more geeked up, great. I agree with those who say there will be plenty of reasons for them — and us — to be geeked next Saturday. I’m expecting one of the loudest cheers in Sanford history when #3 gets introduced/goes on the field. And if he should break a long one early — then it’s Richter scale time.

But it seems the worst possible response to the team’s decision to wear black would be for our Fake Juice Police to poke their lips out and determine that’s a reason for us (fans) not to get geeked up or that there’s a big problem with it. Just like the team should be expected to perform no matter what they’re wearing, we (fans) should bring our A game no matter what we’re wearing.

Agreed on the idea to make the black jerseys permanent tradition when hosting East Alabama Reform School. We’ve lost far more games in both red and white than the single time we stumbled against Bama. If the ’08 team had even remotely shown up in the first half, the performance in the 2nd half would have been the stuff of Legends.

You guys seriously get that bent over a jersey color? You want to throw blame? Did the color of AJ’s jersey cause Stafford’s pass to bounce off of him into the arms of a bama lb? Nope. Did the jersey color keep our O linemen from sound blocking technique? Nope. How about we never should have been ranked that high in 08 to begin with..

          • It’s not about all that, or what the jerseys may or may not do. We have the best uniforms in all of football. No tinkering or gimmick can improve them. But the biggest thing is the potential distraction for the team.

Second to that, it makes us look like fools to the whole country, who still remembers the gimmicks that backfired – the Funeral Game, Florida. I just want to bury all that forever.

Let the fans do whatever they want. That’s the way Richt handled it last time. They can have their fun. Just leave the team out of it.

I am old, and a traditionalist, one who really loves both our current home and road unis. I appreciate all those supporting us to stop running from the horror show that was 2008 Bama for the1st two quarters. Black isn’t fake juice, it is a variation of one piece of our uniform and features one of our primary colors….unlike many of the other schools who are “adopting’ it for whatever reason. It is OK to wear a black jersey at UGA. At TN and UNC….not so much.

The fact that it might very well be our “best look” of all time doesn’t hurt either, and it isn’t like going all Power Ranger, or monochromatic, or screwing with the G on our helmet. If it puts an extra pep in our players’ step, have at it coach. If it impresses young recruits attending or watching, even more reason to do it occasionally. Being viewed as cool isn’t a bad thing…unless you sell your souls for it. I don’t view this as screwing up anything unless it becomes our “every game” look. It is a piece of fabric, and it is our decision, not Nike’s.

I would use it at least once a year, or at least every other year, at the coach’s discretion. What I don’t like is trying to communicate too the fans before hand with a “black out”, let it just be known to the team, this isn’t a wedding party where everything has to be synchronized. And I don’t know if I would use it this Saturday, but I might tell the team we would wear them in the SECCG if they win, or in the bowl. Dangle it like a reward and make them earn it if they want it badly enough. Doesn’t matte Coach, just help them go 1-0 again this week, anyway you can. I know you won’t embarrass us with your choice of what we wear.
