A full-throated defense of Agent Muschamp

Shorter Kurt Roper:  Boom did not handcuff the Gators’ struggling offense.  At least, other than hiring a series of inept offensive coordinators, he didn’t.

I’m not even trying to be snarky here, but why was Boom such a catch in the first place? I honestly don’t remember. I do remember that we always lit up the Auburn D when he was on the Plains. I also seem to recall that his Texas defences weren’t exactly going to give the 2000 Ravens a run for their money. What am I missing? Did saying, “Boom, motherfucker!” make him marketable?

I’ve always wondered that. To me he was no great shakes but everyone thought the world of him. I’m just glad the Gators didn’t hire Strong.

Maybe if they hire Cutcliffe they can keep Mr. Roper

Bite your tongue. I’ve always thought Cutcliffe a good coach. And he’s winning at Duke. Didn’t UF hire another Duke coach not too long ago…

If you judge how good Cutcliffe is by how he beats us (#badkarma), he’s the best around. I was happy Tennessee didn’t hire him instead of the Lane/SOD/Butch trifecta. I will surely be forlorn if Jeremy hires him.

I doubt Coach Cutt would be interested in Florida. He is said to be happy as peach pie at Duke, were performance is its own reward. Like Mike Bobo and Mark Richt, Cutcliffe has some pretty gaudy quarterback coaching skills, but he also has had some health issues. Florida would be lucky to have him, we would not.

Loud, screaming defensive coaches “look the part” of bad asses (BVG, Grantham, Boom, etc.) Muschamp may, or may not be, a talented DC but it was always hard to separate his work from Saban, just as it is with Kirby. All I know was he never a shut down coordinator against us and I wouldn’t want him on our sideline as the HC, ever. Who wants a screaming banji that curses badly at young men? I understand he is much more gentle away from the field, he needs to work on expanding that side of his personality. A leader should convey confidence and calm in a crisis, young folks and subordinates are skittish enough on their own.

Agree Mac. Another saban ‘disciple’ that didn’t pan out, although boom’s defenses were well ranked.

Maybe I’m way off in saying this, but I think fu wanted Strong’s coaching ability without the black skin, so they hired boom. Strong did an awesome job at fu and fully earned a chance to be head coach.

Oh good grief …Texas hired him . You think they are more “progressive” there than Florida. Man… let that skin color crutch shit go.

I agree Strong would have been the best option, and I felt that way before Boom’s flame out. I don’t know Foley at all so I cannot say how much of this was race based but I doubt it was the only reason and I don’t think the fans or boosters would have cared. It was likely more the personal relationship Foley and Strong had, or his questions about how Strong handled people or recruiting. Hindsight would say he should have been as critical about evaluating Muschamp’s skill set but Will was the sexy pick if you believed the “experts”. It is easier to see flaws in those you work closely with than those who just are around you in interviews.

Well said, Mac…I also remember Saban’s horrible verbal abuse of a kid that missed a kick when he was at LSU.

I’ll give Muschamp credit for being a stand-up guy and accepting responsibility for not winning enough games and thus not getting the job done. It’s actually an oddity these days to do something other than blame someone else or slither away from accountability. So, I say, well done, Boom

The media and game commentators promoted the Muschamp is great theme when he was a DC. The cameras stayed on him during every game and Texas became desperate for a DC and made him coach in waiting. That’s another concept that seldom pans out except for FSU. One of the biggest jobs of head coaching is assembling a staff and Muschamp failed miserably which cost him any chance of long term success at Florida.

So was Jax our last ditch effort to keep agent Boom in Gainesville? Hmmm
