Mumme Poll, Week 12

Here you go.

Rank Team Votes
1 Oregon 55
1 Alabama 55
1 Florida State 55
4 Mississippi State 54
5 Baylor 53
6 TCU 52
7 Ohio State 42
8 Georgia 36
9 Mississippi 24
10 Michigan State 6
11 Wisconsin 4
12 Arizona State 2
13 Marshall 1
13 UCLA 1

Mississippi State gets ever so slightly dinged for its road loss. Wonder if the selection committee will see things the same way.  Still, that’s a very tight race we’ve got for the fourth semi-finals slot.

Ohio State survives its loss to Virginia Tech, but Duke doesn’t.

    An 8 team playoff would be fun. UGA vs. Oregon first round.

  2. I wonder why UCLA is getting no love they beat #15 Arizona State and #12 Arizona. They lose to a great Oregon team and a good Utah team. I haven’t been watching their games but that seems like a great resume for a two-loss team.

    Because it’s all based on human bias. Ohio State doesn’t even belong in the conversation..struggling through a soft, soft schedule. Once again they will probably get into the final limelight only to be waxed.

      I want to agree with you, but I suspect it may be my human bias against Ohio State and its fan base.

        I’m biased. It’s human nature. That’s why the committee will f this up.
        Even if they aren’t biased, their opinions will be skewed.
        The only person I can think of that isn’t biased is Lou Holtz.

        BTW..what a great observation about Duke and Ohio St. vs VT.

    Earlier I thought that there was no way a 2-loss SEC champion gets left out of the playoffs, but it’s looking more and more like a 1-loss non-division champ from the SEC could sneak in (assuming the SECW champ goes down in Atlanta). It’d be nice to talk trash about OSU losing to Virginia Tech and VT’s crummy season, but, well, we’ve got two of those losses on our books.

    I guess I just don’t really see how UGA could win out and make the playoffs at this point. Those two losses really hurt, and you’ve got to think Spurrier loves that he was, in some way, responsible for both of them.

    • If UGA wins out, including a win over #1 Bama in the SECC, we’re in. If our opponent in the SECC is not #1 Bama, it’s iffy.

      • And I almost forgot. Who would have thought at the start of the year that the Tech game might be a quality win that could help our cause.

          That’s the great thing about Tech, they count as a major OOC game each year. Just because we beat them like a drum is a bonus. They will give us a decent game this year, but I think the defense finally understands edge containment. After Auburn and Charleston Southern (two triple option teams) as warm ups, we should be able to shut down Tech. No way they stop our running game, though.

            I haven’t watched Charleston Southern at all (or read anything about them); I’m glad they’re a triple option team, too. That’ll help. Also, I don’t think Richt will ever let our guys take Tech lightly. He knows too well that Donnan losing to Tech three years in a row is why he’s got this job, and he knows the importance of the game to the fans. And if not for 15 minutes in 2008 (and a terrible shoulder “tackle”), he’d be undefeated against them.

    One of my many personal problems is that I just can not get serious about pulling for Tennessee.

    I thoroughly detest Butch Jones on field antics. Jones may, in fact, be a decent football coach, although it seems to have taken him some time to figure out Josh Dobbs is worth his time, but I have a very difficult time believing that college football players, and assistant coaches take well to public evisceration during a game.

    I hope you people will forgive me, but if the fucking Vols beat Missouri they are gonna have to do it on their own.

    As for my own self, I gonna worry about Southern and Tech.

    Everyone should go back and take a look at the MISS St. schedule and how close a lot of those games are…No way they are a top 4 team.

    UGA beat every common opponent with Miss St by more than Miss St did.

    UGA
    Auburn 34-7
    @Kentucky 63-31
    @Arkansas 45-32
    Vandy 44-17
    Bama ???

    Miss St
    Auburn 38-23
    @Kentucky 45-31
    Arkansas 17-10
    @Bama 25-20
    Vandy This weekend

      Yes but a win, no matter how close, is still better than a loss. They have one loss on the road to Bama. We have two losses to a couple of tomato cans. If Miss St. is not a top four team then we are not even a top 10 team.

        So Marshall should be #2?

        Reiparm that is the same old “poll mentality” that gave us games like ND versus Bama two years ago. I cannot believe the love for Miss State, that game against Bama wasn’t close, they were never going to win. Fell behind 19-0, should have been more, and then Saban went conservative with his middling offense. The game against Arkansas was close, and the Kentucky win looks decent because of a returned onside kick with seconds left, and that was after MSU had a bye week. This is a decent State team but not Top 10 worthy, imo. Not surprised the AP and Coaches Poll would follow their tired formula but surprised this group of voters regard them that highly. I would love to get to Atlanta and find them as the team waiting for us.

    I will be pulling for another AU miracle in the Iron Bowl. This will leave AL with two losses and the MISS teams in first. The winner of the Egg Bowl would then represent in the SEC title game. I feel we can take either of those teams.

      I am pulling for every upset possible and for UGA to keep winning. UGA needs chaos to really get back in the picture.

      UT over Mizzou
      Arkansas over Ole Miss
      USC over UCLA
      UNC over Duke
      OkSt over Baylor
      Utah over AZ
      WVU over KSU
      Minnesota over Nebraska
      WSU over ASU
      Louisville over ND
      Colorado over Oregon
      Iowa over Wisc

      12 games to watch this weekend. UGA probably needs at least 4-5 of them to go our way. I did try and rank the above list a little. Obviously UGA needs to be in the SEC title game.

        Personally, I just want the Dawgs to win the SEC Championship and to do that they have to win the East first. That requires Mizzou to lose 1 more game. I’m not pulling for UT–I’m pulling against Missouri.

        UNC over Duke doesn’t matter to us, unless you think GT has a better chance to beat FSU in the ACC CG than Duke does. Minn over Nebraska doesn’t matter much either, and neither does WVU over KSU. No 2-loss team is getting in over a 2-loss SEC champ. Three games you left out that I would put as #2, #3, and #4 behind UT over Mizzou in terms of how much they would help UGA are BC over FSU, Indiana over Ohio State, and Vandy over Miss St. I suppose you were only listing realistic upsets, but you said chaos. The three you left out would be the definition of chaos.

          I do think GT would have a better shot at FSU than Duke myself…and I hope GT gets that chance and has bigger fish to fry on their mind when they come to Athens. 🙂

    If the top 6 win out, which is possible, tell me how you tell the difference between #4 – #6 and someone doesn’t feel justifiably screwed? How is this better for fans? How does this problem not become more acute by going to 8 teams? Give me the SEC championship, whip a top team in the Sugar Bowl, and let’s argue all winter.

      The Sugar Bowl is a semifinal game, so it is not an option unless we finish Top 4. My answer to your first question is, if you feel screwed because you are #5 or worse, you should have won all your games. I like 4 teams better than 2, but the inevitable screw job at 4/5 is what keeps things interesting and protects the regular season. An 8-team (or even 6-team) bracket means all Power Five champs are in. With 4, you pretty much have to win your conference AND separate yourself from at least one other Power Five champ. That makes every game matter. 4 just might be the perfect number. Not saying it will stay at 4, but that would be my vote. I will not feel screwed if we win the SEC but are left out because there are 4 major conference teams with 1 loss or less. We screwed ourselves in that scenario.

        I can respect that position, disagree that four is adequate, or that going to eight would do anything but enhance the games/season but we are together on wanting a fair playoff and maintaining the sanctity of the regular season. We just differ on where that point it.

        Right now I want UGA to get to Atlanta abd win the SEC title, if the system excludes the SEC Champ, that is the system’s problem and why it needs work. Like the way this team is progressing and what is coming back next year. And I like what is coming in with this next recruiting class. Keep it rolling guys, the future is bright.

        This is about how I see it, any more than 4 and you are going to have to go the higher seed hosting a first round game….
