Game day thoughts on Clean Old-Fashioned Hate

I’ll be heading out soon, so I just wanted to get a few things in before I go.

This game matters.  A lot.  Not because it has any bearing on the SEC or the playoff picture.  But because this team needs to show itself and us that it’s heading in the right direction.

That all starts by being ready to play.  Taking Georgia Tech seriously.  We all mock the Jackets’ fan base, as well as Paul Johnson’s personality (or, perhaps more accurately, lack of one), but as tempting as it is to dismiss the triple option as a high school offense, the reality is that it’s effective.  And if Georgia’s defense doesn’t come in ready to play sixty minutes of assignment football, it’s going to get run on.

I expect to see the same base defense we’ve seen since Auburn, and why not?  It’s been largely successful with containment.  That, plus limiting what Tech’s B-back does on the dive play, should keep things under control.

I don’t think Tech’s defense is going to have any better success stopping Georgia’s offense than any other team outside of Florida has this year.  The front seven is small and the secondary is the weakest area of the team.  That’s not a good combination.  Let’s not forget, though, that Ted Roof has one solution for any problem, and that’s more blitzing.

Again, Georgia is all about controlling field position and winning turnover margin.  If that happens today, Georgia covers easily.  If not, it’ll be a fight.

It’s Senior Day and there are some kids who deserve our support.  I’ll be there to give it.

Feel free to add your observations, praise and/or grousing in the comments.

I’m worried about a letdown caused by Missouri’s win over Arkansas yesterday taking the Dawgs out of the SECCG. This Dawgs team is clearly the best team in the SEC East and IMHO the only East team that would stand a chance to beat the West representative (likely Bama) in the championship game. It will be up to the Georgia coaches to manage the players’ anger/disappointment so that the team is focused on destroying Tech. Let’s all hope the coaches can do that and the Dawgs come out playing like their hair is on fire.

we’re either going to be totally disinterested and get run out of the stadium or we are going to be relaxed and loose and beat them like a drum. here is hoping for the latter.

I doubt Tech’s D is going to slow down even a disinterested Georgia team. However, if our defense plays half-heartedly, hoo boy, look out. I think we win 45-17 if the Dawgs duplicate the focus they had against Auburn. I think we lose 42-31 if they put in another showing like they did in Jacksonville.

I think that if it were a situation where Mizzou played at noon and won and we played later in the day I would worry about a let down. They have had a day to be disappointed and now it’s time to move on to the task at hand.

I think the Dawgs will honor their seniors by giving the trade school a biblical ass whipping to take with them to Charlotte next weekend.

The Dawgs can still get a conference championship. They win the ACC if they take care of business today and Tech sneaks up on FSU next week. Wins over Clempson and the gnats, who would be “official” champs, would qualify in my book.

The university seems somewhat upset that “someone” hacked the UGA website and had the temerity to post pro-Tech information.

I think that hack is kinda funny. What concerns me is Paul TheJohnson hacking the defense.

To that I say: “If we are not victorious, let no man come back alive.”

I think it is good that many of us here realize that Tech is a challenge, even the Right Rev. Blutarsky.

It seems to me we have to keep the Kharmic Bitches from having an impact on the game by kicking the living shit out of Tech, early, late and in between.

Its been a goofy fucking season, to end it with anything less than a win today would be bad on a level I do not want to contemplate.

Sharpen yer bayonets, boys and girls…this one is no quarter.

Boy, that is a scary thought….hope the jerks that would boo a DGD on his last time at Sanford stay home.

As for the game, we should all know by now, predicting the focus and motivation of 18-22 year olds is damned near impossible, but I think we win solidly. This isn’t to underestimate GT’s intensity because they are desperate for respect but their defense will not throttle Bobo’s offense. No one ever does, and we have some offensive receivers that are just getting their chance to shine and two freshmen backs who don’t know anything but full speed ahead, it is still a huge thrill to them. As for the defense, nothing about Pruitt says he will allow his guys to slack off in practice or games. After learning the lesson about assignment football and staying disciplined, they should be OK. Key is stopping the A dive, after that our perimeter speed should hold them in check enough to get us a cushion.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say a good deal of edge was lost off the game yesterday. But it’s important, nevertheless. Our emotions go up and down for a while after things happen. But the realities of the substance of your post doesn’t change.

Regardless of how any of us feel today, this thing is very important.

UGA Defense – Regression to the Mean in the last game. Some of the worst play calling I have seen. D couldn’t stop anything that resembled a running play. But, the stupidest call of the day goes to the Coach that called for a squib kick with :22 left in the game @ home. Thank God Mizzou won so we don’t get embarrassed in the SECCG.

We should have Richt explain what in the hell he was doing pooching the kick. I said before we kicked off we should kick the hell out of the ball and make them go at least 30 yards for a long field goal try but we gave them an opportunity to win. Our coaching can be good but at times it can be the most dead headed in the SEC. How many games have we lost on kicks either mishandled or pooched. All you Richt supporters say what you will but again, we go 9 – 3 and are, again, not even in the mix for a conference, much less national championship.
If you are happy with “pretty good” year after year, then let’s keep the status quo, let’s set the moral standard for the SEC, and say our coach is a really good man. The fact is he needs to do a better job of winning the big games. Richt gave them a chance to win with 13 seconds because he was afraid they would have a big return. The odds were better for Tech with a pooch kick and a field goal chance than a long kick return. We are an undercoached, overhyped team. I know there will be no change but we should demand better results.

Not really ‘hindsight” Russ. It was a dumb call. It was a “no brainer”..and CMR made a bad choice. They hadn’t had a decent return all day, and one of UGA’s strengths has been kick coverage. CMR decided to run a few more seconds with pooch…but he gave them twenty or twenty five more yards than they would have had with a touchback or a runback. It was a bad decision. I’m not part of the lynchmob, but CMR needs to take the blame for this one. It was dumb..he out-dumbed PJ, who, with the game in hand had his qb attempt the pass that turned into a fumble and gave us the ball back. Both coaches were goobers today, but PJ’s team pulled his butt out of the fire.

Good god, our end of game coaching strategy is just awful in these close games. Every year it is the same damn thing. Even Richt admitted the pooch kick was a terrible decision in the post-game. Indefensible. Such coaching decisions put our players in the difficult predicament of having to win the game three or four separate times in order to ultimately win one goddamn game. Occasionally they’re able to do it, but more often than not, it ends up being another head-scratchin L.

How many big games are we going to lose because of a stupid coaching decision at the end of the game before we wise up? Let’s review: This season we lost the South Carolina game because we had 1st and goal from the 4 and….a naked boot pass play was called, the QB grounds it and we end up getting 0 points–lose the game by 3. Now we lose the GT game because the HC calls a pooch kick-off that allows GT to start at the 43, they gain enogh yardage to try a 53 yard kick and we lose in OT. In 2012 Georgia loses the SECCG when CMR fails to call for the spike with 30 seconds left and after a pass complete in the field of play but which didn’t score time runs out. 2011, our kicker is accurate from inside 40 yards but can’t make them from outside 40–the HC calls for our QB to run BACKWARDS toward the middle of the field setting up a FG attempt from outside the 40–the kicker misses and we lose the bowl game to Michigan State in OT. I could go on–I’ve got plenty of others. But, get the point? This guy’s decision-making is HURTING our team.
