May you play in interesting bowl games.

Why do I have the feeling that the bowl game is never going to live up to the pregame hype?

Although I hope Seth’s right and some enterprising member of the media manages to lob in a couple of questions about Georgia’s S&C program and the IPF at Grantham’s presser.  Gotta get my jollies where I can find them.

  1. Sorry guys but this will likely be a poorly attended bowl party for the Dawgs, regardless of the Grantham/Petrino hype. The Queen City is just a bit too cold at the end of December for anyone in their right mind. I am bowl eligible if the temps are likely to be in the 60’s but it could be 34 and raining at this one. I am sitting this one out, viewing the contest on my 55″ plasma, with a bottle of Buffalo Trace and a double old fashioned glass, nice and warm….

I think most people will be doing what you’re doing. However, because the main purpose of the bowl is to serve as TV programming, prospectively low attendance is unlikely to bother the bowl, conferences, or networks.

My biggest hurdle is not enough PTO to make a 12/30 game, which I imagine could be a hurdle for a few other fans who took some time off but had hoped for at least a NYE bowl.

I like it…yeah it is going to be cold, but short road trip, looks like tickets should be easier on the wallet and NoDa Brewing has Hop Drop n Roll for tailgating.

This bowl is SOOOOO much better than any of the FLA bowls that I basically never want to go to again.

Miranda Lambert is playing at fan fest. It should be fun. Unfortunately my mother in law leaves that day for home. The weather in Jacksonville stunk for the GA/FL game you are not guaranteed beautiful weather anywhere.

I know it’s not the most exciting for most Dawgs fans , but I am excited they are playing in my back yard. Bought my tickets this afternoon. Tickets on the Georgia side the stadium seemed to be going faster, not sure if anyone else noticed that. Praying for descent weather.

Ditto for me. Miranda Lambert in concert at fan fest prior to the game was a good get by Belk. Weather is not FL warm but great football weather. Would like to spank some Grantham defense ass. I think the D will be very motivated. UF aside, they look much better under Pruitt. Time to prove Pruitt is better! Live 50 minutes north of Charlotte. Great downtown!

When I saw Georgia was going to the Belk Bowl in Charlotte I immediately feared that the team would show about the same interest as the Dawgs showed at the Liberty Bowl in 2010. Then I saw the name of the opponent. 🙂

Couldn’t help but notice the “STAY HUNGRY. STAY HUMBLE.” banner Petrino installed in Louisville’s IPF.

    Just like the head coach.

I suspect the AD at Louisville would like to sneak into the IPF and modify Petrino’s banner to read, “Stay Hungry. Stay Humble. Stay Here.”

As for Grantham, maybe his banner could read, “Play Like A Champion If You Feel Like It.”

Louisville–Auburn with a songbird instead of a bird of prey.

+1 I believe the “STAY HERE” part was folded over. It wasn’t necessary.

Love it – #CTG blames all of those wasted Defensive time-outs, blown coverages, and missed tackles on the S&C program. Su…weet!

Are there any charter buses to Charlotte?

  13. This would be about a 5 hour drive for me, and I’m not sure I’d attend if someone gave me 4 great tickets for free (ok, maybe).

Charlotte, NC is an atrociously bad location for a bowl game.

That said, the opponent is solid.

More importantly: I hope this brings tons of attention to our sucky S&C program. I hope Grantham runs his mouth about how terrible ours is. I hope he embarrasses us about that fact.

Then I hope we destroy Louisville and are yet still shamed into going out and putting together a legitimately top tier S&C coach/program.

    A guy can dream, right?

    • Muckie, I thouht they fixed the S&C program after the ’10 season.

      • Nope.

They got rid of Van Halanger (who was basically absentee – he was always on leave for health reasons if I recall, for like YEARS) which was good.

But then they just promoted the videoagrapher, even though he had zero appropriate qualifications and training.

        Insanity.

        • I get that a lot of folks would have preferred someone with a degree in Kinesiology and on the cutting edge of the field rather than Joe T. You do realize that he had worked on the S&C staff since the 70’s right and at one time was the head honcho? Richt basically demoted him when he brought coach Van with him from FSU. This oft repeated line of simply promoting the video coordinator is just a tad bit disingenuous don’t you think?

I don’t think anyone’s saying he just walked off the street with no background. Just that training has come a long way from the 70s (particularly in the real of injury prevention).

Don’t let facts get in the way of a good rant. Fact is, our conditioning was much better the past couple of years as we wore people out at the end of the game. The jury is out on the injuries and whether or not they were preventable. But then, I know as much about S&C every other middle-aged internet jockey here.

Conditioning is great, but that’s 1/4rd of the job.

muck… Have you ever been to Charlotte in the last 10 years. Nice NFL stadium right in uptown.. about 5 or 6 blocks from the center of the city.. brand new minor league baseball stadium right next to it…. Its close to great hotels, food, bars, in uptown, and all an easy walk to the stadium and in a nice part of uptown. You will park your car and not have to get back in it… got the NASCAR hall of fame right in uptown as well… and many people live in uptown. Discovery Place for kids and several top notch art museums… again all right in about a 10 block square… and for those that care, the Uptown Caberet (ain’t quite the Cheetah…) is on the edge of uptown if you need that form of entertainment to round out your trip.. Moved here from Atlanta and never looked back… I guess what I’m saying is “atrociously bad” is probably being a bit harsh… you should give it a try if you get those 4 free tickets……

That’s indeed quite cool, but there are ~30 cities with that, and it is not necessarily a requirement for a good bowl game.

got the NASCAR hall of fame right in uptown as well

Yeah, that’s actually a negative if anything.

restaurants, Discovery Place for kids and several top notch art museums

That’s basically every decent city out there.

Still doesn’t change the fact that the weather will suck and, no fault of Charlotte’s, but the “Belk Bowl” has zero tradition and sounds like a punch line.

Moved here from Atlanta and never looked back…

In all fairness, living inside Urban Meyer’s butthole would be preferable to Atlanta.

But I have heard from many people Charlotte is a mighty fine city to live in. Doesn’t mean I’d want to visit it in late December for a football game though. 🙂

I guess what I’m saying is “atrociously bad” is probably being a bit harsh

It is atrociously bad because the weather will be crappy compared to a nice warm location in Florida, and the city has zero cachet or tradition as a respectable bowl location. It isn’t a slam on the city by any means. 🙂

      • Just to clarify: I’m seriously not trashing Charlotte as a city. I’ve heard enormously good things about it from you and others.

It just has major problems, imho, as a bowl destination.

      • I stayed in downtown Charlotte in March 2011 when UGA was in the NCAA basketball tournament and being in Charlotte in March was nice. After dark, when the weather got cool I was indoors in a comfortable arena. I expect a night game outdoors in late December won’t be as charming.

I do not care a thing for NASCAR so its Hall of Fame is as appealing to me as the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame. Maybe less, at the GTYJHOF I can see guys who lost to UGA!

If Charlotte hosts another NCAA regional in which UGA plays, consider me there.

The more I think of it, the more I’m intrigued by this game. I just want to see Bobo run Grantham silly.

    • Agreed.

Grantham was a gigantic asshole. Early on I was hopeful he could be our “Erk Russel” fire in the belly type coach we really needed.

But it turned out he was just a hothead asshole (getting in fights with kids from the other team? Really?) who refused to take any accountability for his actions, mistakes, or failures.
