There are some in the bulldog nation that have NO idea how important Bobo is or what he has accomplished with seasons full of injuries/suspensions. If he leaves it will be a major blow. I cringe even thinking about the possibility that he leaves.

Maybe but it can only feed another – Coach Richt has lost control of the compensation pool.

Richt’s comments sure make it sound like he expects Bobo to take the job at CSU.

I hope we fight to keep him. He is undervalued by a lot of the fan base.

I really doubt there’s any amount of money that makes him stay as offensive coordinator if he gets offered the head coaching job at Colorado State.

Unfortunately, I doubt we’ll learn whether you’re right. His choices will probably be to stay in Athens hoping that Richt retires in the next 15 years, and that he’ll still be the logical choice to succeed him, or that he takes the CSU job and triples his salary for at least the next 3-5 years.

  9. If we had competent people running our athletic department and University, I’d consider this actually a good sign.

You want to see assistant coaches getting upwardly mobile jobs. It is part of how you attract more great coaches. Think about it.

What is one of the biggest keys to getting top recruits? Showing that you can deliver them into the NFL, NBA, etc. They want to see your school as a pathway to the next level.

The same goes for assistant coaches. If coaching at UGA looks like a dead end job, or a job where you’ll have to move laterally somewhere else just to get decent pay, that’s not very attractive.

Unfortunately for us, a combination of the boneheads running things at Bowel Movement, +Mike Bobo’s significant improvement over the last few years, means losing him would probably hurt us. I have zero confidence in our ability to hire a top notch replacement, even though I think there are certainly people out there (but not many) who could do as good or better job.

I don’t know. I think GM leaves much of that in Richt’s hands. We did fine bringing Pruitt in. And we even thought Grantham was a quality hire for a while. There’s a decent chance we could replace him with a good coach. The problem is that, for the first time since BVG left, we’re trying to replace a coordinator who performs well. And I’ll be interested in GM’s philosophy on ignoring the market when he’s bidding along with everybody else.

I hope he gets the offer and he takes it. Not because I want to see him go. I think Mike Bobo is a fantastic coach and I would love for him to stay, but I think we need something like this to happen to show our AD that you have to pay people what they are worth. I also think it would be nice that the guy who sits two rows behind me in section 129 will no longer be able to scream about Bobo for an entire game.

Assuming they want to hire him, they’re going to offer him $1.5 to $2 million. Do you think he’d stay for $850,000? $1 million? I don’t.

It will be interesting to see what they are willing to pay. The McElwain deal was considered a stretch for them and that was after he had been there for 2 years. If I had to guess, I’d say a little over a million a year is their offer.

Sounds contradictory but I like Bobo. I think he is an excellent OC and will make a very good HC. I’d hate to see him go. But, new blood coordinating UGA’s O and calling plays may be a good thing. If he leaves, I’d like to see CMR hire from outside the program.

Just curious as to why you think this? The offense has not been the problem the last 7-8 years (Especially the last 3-4) so why do we need new blood? We have a system that works and have recruited a ton of talent for that particular system. I would rather the offense not have to learn a completely different system next year

If you look at what Florida has been through in it’s quest to find a good OC then you gain some appreciation of what Georgia might be facing when Bobo does leave.
Name the man ‘Coach in Waiting” and give him a big raise.

Recent NCAA rules have eliminated “coach in waiting” arrangements. UGA could promise Bobo something in private, but they couldn’t put it in writing or publicize it.

Good point. CSU can afford to pay pretty high dollars for Bobo, or anyone else. I recall (haven’t looked it up) the McElwain was getting about $2 Mil per year. With the $7 Mil buyout windfall, CSU can sign Bobo to a 7 year contract at the same salary as McElwain was getting with HALF Bobo’s salary being paid for by McElwain’s buyout.

    Good for him.

    A lot to think about.

If he leaves, would we promote internally?

If they think he’s getting the job, I would snatch his company cell phone: protect recruiting classes.

Good point, but Colorado is a lot closer to the Oregon QB Than UGA.
Remember Richt basically brought DJ Shockley with him.

        • If the qb does not sign with Uga no way he signs with csu. Distance has nothing to do with it. 5 star players just do not go to csu. Even if bobo stays still a year before he signs anyway.

I could be mistaken but Bob Davies believes the QB in the 11th grade is from the northern part of Oregon known as Washington, which is even further away from Ft. Collins, a suburb of Cheyenne

I am here in my office thinking of the additional half-million plus we can allocate out of the athletic department if we simply did not hire a replacement.

You know we had some pretty competitive teams at Florida with Steve Spurrier in the dual head coach-offensive coordinator role. Many of you will remember we did it without an indoor practice facility.

I am thinking how nice of a present we would be delivering to the other departments heads, just in time for Christmas.

I can not think of a better way to show the nation how a university can thrive with the right balance between academics and athletics.

What is the down side? He leaves and Richt gets fired a few years down the road, or the program improves with a more hands on Richt. Both provide a path to possible improvement. I will take the risk given the post season CMR has been taking the program to.

      Like

      • Hackerdog

I guess the down side is that our scoring offense goes from first in the SEC to, something lower. In fact, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that occurred. Also, I remember when Richt was more hands on, like in 2006, and most of us were happy when he handed off the reigns to Bobo. So Richt isn’t necessarily the cure for going from first to first.

Reipar, Otto doesn’t like CMR or Coach Bobo. There is a reason why a portion of the fan base is referred to as the lunatic fringe. When you see no downside to losing a coordinator that has consistently kept his side of the ball at or around the top of the league, you are in the lunatic fringe.

Bobo isn’t working he is failing less, combined with a culture that blames the defense, if UGA somehow puts 20 or more points on the board even if the offense plays dead for multiple possesions. Bobo has long stretches of quick 3 and outs even in wins (see Arkansas) CWM gets blame for CPJ’s 1st UGA win, which he surely deserves. However the 3rd Qtr also consisted of multiple 3 and outs for Bobo’s offense, which does not get blame.

Lunatic fringe. Hardly. I do however understand that much of the fan base may not be content but fears change. If some of us want change we have to understand that may require things getting worse for things to get better. UGA under Richt is much like Texas under Mack Brown, they may talent their way to 1 title but will see their rivals snatch away vast majority of their chances. I do think Richt is comfortable with the offense, overly comfortable and the staff needs a shake up. Dropped balls and fumbles at the most critical times remain common (Nebraska, GT). I think UGA can get good hungry coaches which may get the program over the top even with Richt. If not I am comfortable that we have witnessed the most we can expect from the current staff 14 out of 15 seasons.

You want to know what our rivals think of Bobo:

But Florida was gashed by both Alabama and LSU on the outside, and especially to its right side, and I assume Georgia saw enough of that on tape to run left all the time. I would, certainly, and I think even Mike Bobo will, so I wouldn’t be too worried about getting the running game going, unless Georgia stubbornly tries to force Nick Chubb into holes that won’t exist up front.

Read that “even Bobo” BTW he ran it up the middle how many times, how toss sweeps did we see that worked earlier in the year?

So having the best scoring offense in the SEC isn’t good enough if you have occasional 3 and outs. UGA should convert more third downs. We were only third in the conference in third down conversion. I guess we could do better there.

Just on the off chance that the coaches read these comments, what kind of coaching eliminates fumbles? And how do explain teams that excel at turnover margin one year regressing to the mean the next? Everything I’ve seen on fumbles and fumble recoveries conclude that they’re random. But I’m sure they don’t know what you know.

I guess you could keep hoping that soon, we’ll replace Richt and be where Texas is today. Fingers crossed. 🙂

Next meme we’ll hear is the Fire Richt crowd only comes out after a loss.

A courtesy interview, a move to a lesser ACC school, and 1 mid level mid major is hardly defeating the argument especially if he is as underpaid as many say. If he is under paid and great wouldn’t people be lining up on this bargain?

I have liked Colorado State ever since the Bradlee Van Pelt days. It is a program where Bobo could be very successful.

If he gets the job, who is the replacement? Richt has said that Tony Ball was a good Xs and Os guy and would make a good coordinator one day. If he didn’t get it, would Bobo take him to CSU as his OC, leaving two openings? Does he take any of the Grad Assistants with him (maybe C-Rob)?

Some of you guys (OTTO) are really shortsighted or blinded by your hatred of Richt & Bobo to the point of stupidity. Bobo isn’t just a tremendous OC, he’s also great at developing QB’s and he’s also a damn good recruiter! In his time, Bobo has mentored David Greene, Mathew Stafford and Aaron Murray. Pretty damn good credentials if you ask me. I’d pay Bobo whatever it takes to keep him around!
