The best laid plans of mice and Greg McGarity

Talk about your sense of timing – right on the heels of my noting that Georgia appears lucky enough to avoid the potential bidding war Jeremy Foley may face over keeping one of the football program’s assistant coaches comes word that Mike Bobo’s name is in the mix for the head coaching gig at Colorado State.  Is Bobo jonesing to run his own program?  Dunno, but the pay isn’t likely to be half bad.  Jim McElwain was making $1.5 million a year when he was hired away by Florida.  That ain’t Will Muschamp money, but it’s a shitload more than Bobo’s banking right now.

Which brings us, naturally, to Greg McGarity.  The man with the rules, like this one:

“To me it’s all about performance and results,” McGarity said. “And we address those at the end of the season. If adjustments need to be made, then we’ll make them. That’s how we do things with all our sports. Nothing’s changed over the last four years. I’ve always said you should see the whole body of work.”

Does that mean he’d hold to refusing to consider Bobo’s situation until after the bowl game, regardless of whether things heat up with CSU?  And that, if Bobo should emerge as Colorado State’s first choice, whatever he offers Bobo will be based solely on how Georgia has performed, no matter the size of CSU’s offer? I mean, I guess he could, but it’s hard to see how Georgia doesn’t lose its offensive coordinator with an approach like that.  If nothing else, it should provide the program with a terrific distraction during bowl preparation and down the recruiting stretch.

Even if McGarity ignores the niceties of that rule and steps up to keep Bobo in red and black at a price, then what about this?

But offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, whose offense has set records the past few years, continues to be paid nearly $300,000 less than the school’s defensive coordinator. McGarity said that’s Richt’s decision, or at least Richt’s decision within the salary pool that he is provided each year.

“Mark has a pool of money that he allocates however he allocates,” McGarity said. “There was a significant jump made after the ’12 season for Mike. The pool is reflective of team success. You basically see where the pool is and how it ranks and where you finish. It’s all based on results.”

Again with the results.  Will Bobo’s raise come out of the existing pool?  If so, which coach or coaches take a cut to make up for it?  I think we know that’s an empty effort to shift away responsibility.  But when Bobo gets his raise and the pool increases accordingly, what message should Georgia’s other coaches take from that?

The message I’d take is that while Greg McGarity claims he ignores the market, the reality is that the market ignores Greg McGarity.  That’s how you get reactive leadership instead of proactive leadership.  It’s a helluva way to run a railroad, one that grosses a hundred million a year, but that’s Butts-Mehre.  That’s the Georgia Way.

Bobo is a southerner and may not be the nomad that most coaches are. I don’t see him going to Colorado State but regardless his salary should immediately be made equal to the DC.

If bobo leaves it will be because he wants to run his own program and no reasonable amount if money will keep him in Athens. I’m willing to bet BM will step up with the $ to keep him if Bobo wants to stay

Good point, but sometimes you have to go away for a while and establish yourself then come back home. I think Bobo needs to detach himself from Richt to make his own name. Also, McGarity may offer a couple of hundred thousand bump to keep him but that would be the max. He ain’t going all Muschamp on it.

“He might have to battle Pruitt for it first”

Pruitt has two years of experience as a defensive coordinator. He’s not going to be a head coach at a major (or semi-major) program like Georgia anytime soon. The time span for moving from a coordinator at a major school to a head coach at a major school is generally ten years. That’s roughly how long it took Mark Richt, Bob Stoops, Will Muschamp, Charlie Strong, etc.

If you think that Pruitt’s performance to date as a coordinator somehow exceeds the resumes of those that I mentioned then there’s no point in arguing with you.

Or you could provide your own example to back up your point 😉

I think that Gus Malzahn and Hugh Freeze have upset the apple cart on that career path.

AD’s would NEVER have looked at a guy barely removed from HS ball as recently as 10 years ago but those guys have paved the way.

My guess is that deserved or not, Pruitt will be rumored for HC jobs within one or two more seasons (assuming his D’s don’t begin to resemble those of Kevin Ramsey)

Malzahn Arkansas’s offensive coordinator in 2006. He was Auburn’s head coach beginning with the 2013 season. Seven years. He’s quite the anomaly and he still had head coaching experience before taking over Auburn.

Hugh Freeze was a college head coach at Lambuth and Arkansas State before taking over Ole Miss.

More importantly, I was referring, very specifically, to big-time coordinators who made the leap STRAIGHT to big-time head coaches, because that’s what jaboo was implying Pruitt would do by taking over UGA. Neither person you named has done that.

If you want to make a case that Pruitt will be getting head coaching offers at smaller schools in a few years, fine, but understand that it’s irrelevant to my argument.

Scared money never wins. If Bobo wants to take the head job at CSU, he should, and we should all be happy for him. The crowd at Georgia who live in terror of change need to realize that change is inevitable. Bobo has done a great job the past few years and I don’t want him to leave. If he does leave, someone else will be the OC, Georgia will not have to shut down it’s football program.

In my opinion, Bobo should get a raise to what Pruitt is making. The offense has performed as well, or better, than the defense. If that’s not enough money for Bobo, wish him the best and wave goodbye.

My point is; many around Georgia athletics live in fear of any change. They immediately point to Tennessee when anyone mentions a coaching change but they completely ignore Florida, Auburn, Alabama, etc. I don’t want Bobo to leave, but I also don’t think the AD should throw money at him to keep him from looking. I think Bobo should make what Pruitt makes, that seems fair considering the performance of the offense the past few years.

The Butts Mehre crowd is the reason Georgia athletics are in such a pitiful state. They operate like they have no money and everything they do is completely reactionary. Nothing is going to change until the fans stop sending in those tens of millions of dollars and start demanding some real results on the field or court.

Good point, but giving raises to coaches who continue to lose games they should win and fall short of winning anything of real consequence in spite of having top level talent. I am all for being fair to Bobo and I think it would be fair for him to be paid the same as Pruitt. To pay him any more than that, in order to keep him from taking another job, seems like a bad move.

It was somewhat refreshing to me, reading McGarity’s comments, that this may be the first time ever that our coaches have had an AD tie the coaches pay level to their on field performance. Hopefully, McGarity was sending a message to Richt and staff that the continued bed crapping in games might be unacceptable.

I don’t blame Bobo solely, but first and goal from the four and five tries from inside the three weren’t on the defense. I’ll give you the Florida game, but SC and tech are on the offense.

I guess if we had won a championship of some kind since our players were in middle school, I’d be more concerned about a coach leaving. As it is, I’m not sure what we are clinging to. I think Bobo has done a good job and don’t necessarily want him to go, but life will go on if he does.

Maybe Tech, but we scored 35 points against South Carolina. Only three other teams put up more points against them in regulation. Contrarily, we gave up 38 points to them and only two other teams gave up more than that in regulation, and they were Vandy and South Alabama.

Let that sink in and then reconsider if that loss falls upon the offense or the defense.

For what it’s worth, I think Richt has some money motivation, but that motivation is satisfied at his current salary. I think he will stay at Georgia forever at his current salary (adjusted for inflation) as long as he has no more pressure put on him to win more. The bidding isn’t based on the recipient’s attitude for the pay given. It’s based on his value to the program and that goes well beyond what happens each game where he is judged by play on the field. A goodly number of parents are teamed with our coaches to provide our recruits. That association is liable for disruption at any time based on the loss of assistants who have a career still ahead of them, but if you screw with the builders of this team, the tremors shake longer and harder and you don’t know what the damages are until it’s all over. This is not the time to see what happens by losing the best O coach out there.

The trolls never rest when it comes to trying to convince us to get rid of great coaches.

I guess firing Donnan and bringing in Richt really bothered you since it had to affect the recruiting, which Donnan was very good at? I don’t necessarily want Bobo to leave, but I don’t see paying him $1 million plus to keep him. I say it again, he should make what Pruitt makes, that would be fair. If it’s not enough and he wants to be a head coach, we should wish him well.

Bobo has become a very good OC, but we could find another good one if he left.

If I were his agent, that would be the number I would go to GM with and say if you and Mark want Mike to take his name out of the running at CSU, commit to that number. I would suggest Bobo is worth even more than that due to his value as a recruiter.

Mike Bobo clearly deserves more money for the work he’s produced and I hope he gets it. But consider the position he would be leaving? B-M’s ability to hire a championship Head Coach is one thing, a coordinator is quite another. Wanted Offensive Coordinator: under a head coach with a proven track record of attracting Heisman/Pro level quarterbacks, in a talent rich state, with an IPF in the works and along side a talented staff! I think Georgia would be fine in finding a great O.C. to come in. Not because I have faith in B-M, but because I believe Richt is considered a top 5 guy to work for. See Jeremy Pruitt.

I’m so tired of hearing the “it’s about where we are” as a justification for pay scales. What I mean by that is it sounds like McGarity thinks his coaches are middle of the road coaches so he pays middle of the road wages to them. The problems with that are: 1) They, especially Bobo, aren’t middle of the road in performance. Bobo has been one of the best offensive coordinators in the land lately. Secondly, if you as AD really believe your coaches are middle of the road, why do you keep them around? It sounds as if he doesn’t mind that he doesn’t have to pay top dollar doesn’t it? Are you satisfied with middle of the pack? If not, move on to someone who can do better. Don’t get me wrong, I am NOT in the fire the coaches group. I do believe Richt has it in him to win big and with Pruitt and Bobo as coordinators and recruiters I believe it can happen. I just wonder why if McGarity doesn’t believe that he continues with the status quo. If he does believe it, then pay the men.

          • Let’s look rationally at each of the 4 programs you bring up:

            1) Florida – finished 9-15 over the last 2 years with a Birmingham Bowl thrown in. CMR couldn’t survive that in Athens. He was on the hot seat after 1 losing season in 2010 following 10-3 (top 10) and 9-4 (top 25) finishes.
            2) Auburn – finished 3-9 after winning the national championship 2 years prior. I don’t think Georgia has ever lost 9 games in a season. Richt would have probably been fired in Athens as well.
            3) Alabama – got it right by hiring Little Nicky. Don’t forget Rich Rod was the Tide’s 1st choice. Moore got a little lucky to get Saban. Mike Shula had really done nothing at Bama up to that point.
            4) Ohio State – Jim Tressel would still be in C-bus if he hadn’t lied about Tattoo-gate. Once again, they got a no-brainer replacement with Corch (similar to the Tide with Saban).

In 2 of the 4 situations you mention, the team was LOSING big and wasn’t getting better. In 1 of the situations, the team was winning, but the coach made a career-limiting move by lying to his bosses and the NCAA. Alabama realized they made a bad hire and corrected it. You can’t say CMR was a bad hire at the same point Alabama fired Shula.

None of these 4 situations are even close to the situation UGA is in right now. It would be a significant risk to make a change given where the program is right now. A win on 12/30 likely moves us into the final top 10. We have a sure fire top 5 recruiting class on the way in February with the start of another big time class in 2016. We aren’t in a fiscal situation that many athletic departments find themselves in. The facility upgrades are coming (maybe more slowly than some would like). It’s clear CMR wants to upgrade the S&C program and staff. Do I want a championship? Yes, but I also think we’re taking the right steps to get there.

When Bobo signed his contract after the 2012 season, it raised his salary to $575K. McGarity commented at the time that his salary put in the “Top 4” in the conference, and that was what he thought was appropriate. Bobo will get a raise this offseason and it will be “Top 3”. Cam Cameron makes $1.3M. The next two highest OC salaries were Junior and Kurt Roper making $700K. My guess, if he doesn’t take a HC position, is around $750-800K and would be the 2nd highest paid OC in the SEC and around 6th in the country. I imagine that is what McGarity will think is appropriate for the result of 1st in the Conference and 8th Nationally in scoring.

Agree, that deserves no respect. Just another inflammatory comment that shows the lack of reasonableness of the attack force. There are reasons to have discussions about go or stay for any coach that has been in place for 14 years but you have to be balanced and give credit as well as state the reasons, and plan, for change. I heard a Sooner fan call in last night to a national show and act the same way for Stoops’ removal from OU. As with Richt, there are high moments and low lights but again, they had no idea of where an upgrade would come from. Working against Big Game Bob is his arrogant attitude, and likeability factor. But OU would be crazy to make a change at this time and the fans should support the program as opposed to damaging it publicly. Even though their 2014 season was more disastrous than ours, like UGA, they could be 1-2 seasons from being back in the Top 5.

You may disagree with me but the winning percentages Patrick Garbin is posting paints another story. It is time for change in Athens. The program is at best stagnant or worse in decline.

You obviously never watched UGA when Richt was play caller.

I did watch, Richt was frustrating but he managed to win games. Richt as CEO has declined. http://patrickgarbin.blogspot.com/2014/10/from-impressive-to-inferior.html

I will also add much of the criticism of Richt as OC was putting Shock in and throwing Green off and then ’05/’06 which when Bobo was getting more authority.

I will gladly go back to Richt as OC given the current state of the program.

2006 was a dumpster fire up to the moment that CMR TURNED OVER play calling to Bobo, not b/c of Bobo.

CMR’s play-calling was critical in the losses to Auburn in 2005 and Tennessee in 2006.

What’s more, CMR’s poor clock management (still evident in 2014) was a significant part of his poor play-calling throughout the early oughts.

CMR developed his offensive philosophy in the gut rot ACC of the 1990’s. The idea that “my 11 beat your 11” does not cut it at the top tier of the SEC and is the reason that CMR’s offenses seemed banal.

Sure would like to hear an announcement that Bobo and the offensive staff have been given raises across the board and aren’t going anywhere, along with an announcement that the practice facility is happening. They’re a great staff who deserves it, and announcing both of those would be a hell of a way to ensure closing out a great recruiting class.

Its a shame how clearly ridiculous that is to hope for when it should be a pretty obvious strategy from an administrative standpoint. Two things that should happen, and the announcement of which should not wait any longer than they have to. Every day it waits is a day every other coach can beat us over the head with it on the recruiting trail… especially the prospect of the OC and best recruiter leaving.

If Bobo is really offered the CSU gig he is gone.

    CSU has figured it out.

Sign Bobo to contract with buyout. Say 4years/$7million with a $7mm buyout

in 2 years someone is going to come for Bobo and pay the buyout. Then they got to use Bobo for free for 2 years and get a nice little chunk of coin for facility upgrades.

Just thinking out loud here: would Richt name Bobo coach in waiting? Would McGarity allow it?

Richt nor McGarity have that authority and CIW is just not a good idea. Fisher/FSU seems to be the only place that has ever worked and that is only because they were willing to run Bowden off soon after.

Under recent NCAA rule changes, coaches in waiting can’t recruit. So nobody does that anymore.

The question is moot. Bobo is gone.

” The pool is reflective of team success. You basically see where the pool is and how it ranks and where you finish. It’s all based on results.”
So WHEN, not if, this staff wins the National title the entire staff will be the highest paid staff in the NCAA? If you use this logic Finishing #1 should net you the top pay, wonder if McGarity realizes what he has repeatedly stated.
If they finish 20th the next year will he cut the pay then? I know I am being to literal with his statement but that is what he is actually saying.

When you consider that Barners just gave Boom $1.6-$1.7 to come run their defense, you have to wonder if the gap between lower tier teams and the upper echelon is widening. A program like UGA could offer Bobo more money as an OC than he can make at a place like CSU.

If Bobo leaves for CSU we will get to witness firsthand just how frugal B-M and McGarity truly are. I am anxious to see how this plays out. My money says that they pay someone close/equal to what Pruitt is making.

If assistants’ pay truly reflected “results” as McGarity keeps saying, then Bobo would be making twice what any of the Defensive coaches are.
